"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am jmr3:

All I ever knew about Zoogz Rift was that he had an album called Island of Living Puke. Never wold have guess he sounded like this. I like it. I probably wouldn't have back whenever that was . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am The Oscar:

I first heard about Zoogz in the Church of the Subgenius' "High Weirdness by Mail" book (though the addresses were mostly defunct by the time I got my hands on it). It's where I first heard of both Negativland and GG Allin, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am melinda:

  9:25am Lawrence Stevenson:

Zoogz was a presence on pro wrestling message boards in the 90s. I knew him from those and then drifted into listening to some of his music.

Had only heard the name, Zoogz R.

Always wondered why Ollie Halsall never got more recognition. Incredible guitarist plus he played the vibraphone (!!!)
Avatar 9:31am themutante:

Powerful, Clay Pigeon still in attendance. He doesn't just jump in a limo after his set. Man of the people.

I was literally just stepping out of the shower realizing there was no 10 minute version of Wake Up this morning and thought - oh good. Maybe that ended. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Ken From Hyde Park:

Happy AM, DJ JA. Not intending to siphon off listeners, but Doug on the Drummer Stream is having a graduate degree earning party today. www.wfmu.org...

@Krys Same here! I never wrote to any of the addresses, but it expanded my teenage mind well toward the fringes :)
  9:40am David in London:

@TDK - I won't tell if you don't...
  9:42am ynisvitrin:

Is there an inside joke I'm missing for why the 10-minute "wake up" gets played every week? I am trying hard not to let it enrage me.
Avatar 9:46am Wild Neil||Peace All:

I REALLY don't like Wake Up. It is not cool like some hip hop sampling. I find it anemic and academic. PLEASE stop playing it. It sucks.

Cute track.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am sphere:

@ Polyus - it's a plucked instrument and evidently it's one of the oldest in the world. there's evidence that the veena was played as early as the 2nd century BC.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am joe mulligan:

oh crackers, I missed the Zoogz! next time. they played a lot of him on wkdu Drexel U philly radio in the 90s
Avatar 10:31am Polyus:

I think that's why I gravitated toward the West Coast punk stuff as a loser high school kid, as opposed to the British stuff I thought I was supposed to like. I would read about SST bands and think "hey, they look just like me, they seem like regular people". The Pistols and The Clash were good and all but they said nothing to me, just not my world. Plus I thought they looked kinda silly.
Avatar 10:34am TDK60:

Polyus: I liked that there were different punk looks, and musics. Conformity in punk was boring but transcended/avoided by many. (And Clash at least tried all sorts of music.)
  10:34am iiiiekiekeekeike:

Agreed, @ynisv and @WN@9:46 -- but pointing that out is just likely to encourage him to keep playing it. I just switch to the Drummer stream during that and come back later. (This set is freaking awesome though.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am steveo:

you are firing on all cylinders today, mr. allen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Krys O.:

@The Oscar: I featured the Hour of Slack on my show back in the mid-80s on FMU.
  10:37am Ben Abs:

This show has been off the hook today JA. Thanks!
  10:39am iiiiekiekeeiiiikei:

@Krys, is it my imagination or w/newer DJs is there a shift away from a contrarian impulse to occasionally confuse and/or enrage FMU listeners? Is FMU still FMU without that? Is JA upholding a grand tradition as 1 of those more old-school FMU DJs like Irwin and Kenny G.? ;)
Avatar 10:40am D. Lightfoot:

Sorry I'm late. I've been placing photos in a shitty baseball history all morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am BronwynB:

i used to think they were saying "love dongs in space"
  10:42am David in London:

@BronwynB - I'm going use that as the title for my autobiography...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am BronwynB:

@iiiiekiekeeiiiikei: i can't speak for all the new people but im newish and i love the contrarianism and confusion. i plan to play more show tunes on the air for that very reason.
Avatar 10:42am D. Lightfoot:

I'm going to think they are saying that from now on

the Neon Boys version of "Love Comes . . ." and "Time" was one of the first 45's I ever bought, after Gerry Rafferty and something by Pablo Cruise, and maybe a KC and the Sunshine Band. Had no idea what it was. Eye opener for sure.
Avatar 10:46am themutante:

I haven't stopped thinking about those dongs.
Avatar 10:46am D. Lightfoot:

Is "Love" an imperative-tense verb or an adjective in this context?
Avatar 10:47am themutante:

Dahl sounds sooo Swedish.
  10:47am David in London:

Love Dongs in Space will be a low-budget sex/sci-fi film, like Flesh Gordon. Only worse.
Avatar 10:47am D. Lightfoot:

I picture them drawn in that sort of Heavy Metal magazine 70s fantasy art style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am steveo:

Must Love Dongs in Space.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am !ke:

@Sphere and @BB: Hmm, you're right. Maybe there isn't such a shift. Or maybe I was thinking more of DJs who *say* things to confuse and enrage listeners rather than *playing* things that confuse and enrage listeners. I'm not sure.
