Hey there, Psychspaniolos!
  12:00pm Dean:

The segue from the Dagar raga to your in-theme was exquisite.
Avatar 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean! DJ Stream Robot is a master of segues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Yvang:

Hallo everyone! Ready to clank!
Avatar 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Yvang!
Avatar 12:03pm TDK60:

Good morn to the Willamette Valley denizens; afternoon to the Hudson valley ones.
Avatar 12:04pm Tony Coulter:

Given what I'll mostly be playing today, those robots should really have mullets.
Avatar 12:04pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, TDK60!
Avatar 12:04pm βrian:

Time to spank the clank.
Avatar 12:05pm Tony Coulter:

βrian! Hiya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm fleep:

Got your bizarre cadence, right here. Greetings, Tony.
Avatar 12:06pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, fleep!
Avatar 12:07pm βrian:

Will today's trajectory be from cadence to decadence?
Avatar 12:07pm TDK60:

a decadent decade?
  12:08pm Sem near Oxford UK:

Howdy, Tony, those of the Coultergeist persuasion, and the especially bizarrely-cadenced.
Avatar 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Sem!
Avatar 12:09pm TDK60:

the plot thickens...
Avatar 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

Understandably, I guess, I use to confuse Dwarr with Gwar.
  12:13pm Sem near Oxford UK:

Different hats, TC, that's how I remember.
Avatar 12:14pm βrian:

@Sem, you've been latitudinally displaced??
Avatar 12:15pm Nick S.:

Hey, TOny! Made it.
Avatar 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Nick!
  12:20pm Sem near Oxford UK:

Listening from north of 51 degrees, more or less west or east, depending how far I lean one way or the other.
Avatar 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

Be careful not to tilt the Earth off its axis.

Sounds like Jack Bruce!
Avatar 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Tony! Greetings from BK
Avatar 12:24pm TDK60:

Are you the same Sem who was from Canada, eh?
  12:30pm Sem near Oxford UK:

Vacationing only, eh?
Avatar 12:32pm TDK60:

Are the rails workin out? I go to north OX this summer....
  12:37pm Sem near Oxford UK:

Lucked into private transport, won't ride a single rail while here. Off to dinner, thanks, TC, all. See you on the archives.

Avatar 12:38pm TDK60:

have a blast
  12:39pm Joanne from St. Louis:

Hi! You are very welcome! I have listened to WFMU since the late 1970s and actually won the grand prize (I still use the speakers!!) back then during a pledge-a-thon. Still my all time favorite radio station and glad I can tune in on the web! Your show is all about freeform - so why not single you out?! Thanks for the all of the ear candy :)
Avatar 12:40pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Joan! I'm honored you singled me out!! Nice to see you here!
  12:43pm Joanne from St. Louis:

Thanks muchly. Nice to be able to be here! You deserve to be singled out. Hope the pledging went well for you.
Avatar 12:43pm Tony Coulter:

The pledging did go well this year, yes -- for which I am very grateful.
Avatar 12:44pm Tony Coulter:

A lot of these radio station comps are from the early to mid-80s, but for the most part, musically speaking, they are still firmly rooted in the '70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Scraps deSelby:

clank ! clank !
  12:45pm Joanne from St. Louis:

Love the sounds you comp!
Avatar 12:46pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Joanne!
Avatar 12:46pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Scraps!
  12:46pm Psychspaniolos:

Avatar 12:48pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Psychspaniolos! Some of these comps have pretty eye-catching covers. Others are very generic.
  12:49pm Psychspaniolos:

The last two img.discogs.com...

Avatar 12:49pm Tony Coulter:

The self-released album by Easter Island (on now) goes for mucho dinero: www.popsike.com...
Avatar 12:50pm TDK60:

That WMMR the Philly station?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Jeff Golick:

WOW. That's some dank clank.
Avatar 12:51pm Tony Coulter:

@ TDK60: Yep! That WMMR.
Avatar 12:52pm Tony Coulter:

Jeff G! Heya!
  12:54pm Psychspaniolos:

Avatar 12:55pm Tony Coulter:

@ TDK60: So, you've heard WMMR? Is it a "classic rock" station or sumpin? I'm not familiar with it.
Avatar 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

Jeff Cannata (on now) was in the band Jasper Wrath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm steveo:

I grew up listening to MMR. Traditionally a classic rock station, but Wikipedia currently classifies it as "active rock" which means they play new stuff, too.
Avatar 12:59pm TDK60:

According to interwebs it's ROCK, maybe they had an 'out' show? But maybe this label is another WMMR?
  12:59pm Psychspaniolos:

nice img.discogs.com...
Avatar 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

@ TDK60: Nope, definitely the same station.
Avatar 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Steveo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm steveo:

Yes, also, hi!
  1:09pm Psychspaniolos:

Avatar 1:09pm TDK60:

oh, a local LP, with all kinds of styles, i'm slow...hee
Avatar 1:10pm northguineahills:

Still glub glubbing down here in FL.
Avatar 1:10pm Tony Coulter:

@ Psychspaniolos: Ha! Pretty funny! Hadn't seen that before.
Avatar 1:11pm Tony Coulter:

NGH! Glub ... I mean, hello!
Avatar 1:12pm Tony Coulter:

Oddly, Cyrille Verdeaux, leader of the French band Clearlight Symphony, was in High Peaks (on now)
  1:15pm Psychspaniolos:

is this the one before Tony? 4.bp.blogspot.com...
Avatar 1:16pm Tony Coulter:

Yep! That's it....
Avatar 1:16pm northguineahills:

You've stumped so far Tony, I only recognize Waterloo so far.
Avatar 1:18pm Tony Coulter:

... and The Rooster, I assume....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Jeff Golick:

"Statutory Rock" is...not good.
Avatar 1:20pm TDK60:

Anyone know of a V/A of Ohio/Michigan rock/punk/etc circa '80s-'90s?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Rich in Washington:

I'll bet you've run into every single KGON Homegrown compilation volume out there.
Avatar 1:21pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Rich! I *do* have several of those!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Rich in Washington:

@TDK60: there's got to be at least one mid-80s Hardcore Punk compilation, I just can't think of one at the moment.
Avatar 1:21pm Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff G: "Statutory Rock ... raping your ears since 1973."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Rich in Washington:

KGON was a pretty good rock station in the mid 70s/early 80s.
Avatar 1:23pm TDK60:

There were bands outta the NE Midwest (80-90s)-- sorta post punk meets hard rock craziness. GBV one of 'em maybe.
Avatar 1:24pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: A Portland comp is coming up next -- from KYTE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Rich in Washington:

I barely remember KYTE. I can hear their logo ID. I think they were pop/soft rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Rich in Washington:

Oh. I looked them up. They played Beautiful Music format.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Rich in Washington:

or BM for short. The music FLOWS through you.
Avatar 1:27pm Tony Coulter:

This comp is all rock, though. Maybe they changed formats at some point.
Avatar 1:28pm TDK60:

y'know, Pittsburgh over to Lansing, down to Toledo, Bloomington-IN, Louisville. Cinci, Columbus, Cleveland. Maybe easier to find for specific towns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Rich in Washington:

Their current listing has them as Adult Contemporary, so who knows?
  1:37pm Psychspaniolos:

Avatar 1:40pm Tony Coulter:

@ Psychspaniolos: That one's got one of the nicer covers -- very '60s feeling.
Avatar 1:50pm TDK60:

Paisley shirt, purple velvet suit jacket, black beatle boots, big belt buckle, bellbottoms w/blue & white stripes.
Avatar 1:52pm Tony Coulter:

How'd you know how I'm dressed?
Avatar 1:53pm TDK60:

I could tell
Avatar 1:54pm northguineahills:

@TDK60: That's how I dressed in HS....(in the 90s)
Avatar 1:55pm TDK60:

Possibly where you reside Tony, nobody would notice.
Avatar 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

Actually, I realized a while ago that my biggest fashion influence was the band Polyrock: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

Monochrome work shirts and such. The opposite of flamboyant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Rich in Washington:

This is a far cry from CC's work on L. Ron Hubbard projects.
Avatar 1:58pm Tony Coulter:

It's flat-out prog rock, not jazz at all.
Avatar 1:58pm TDK60:

Polyrock very Talking Headsy-- new wave very smart and the opposite of flashy yes, worker-like; a sort of post-Mod in grey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm steveo:

tony, please don't tell anyone I favorited this prog rock
Avatar 1:59pm northguineahills:

I have no dress code at work, but I usually wear old polos and jeans. as I don't want to wear out my beloved concert and WFMU tees....

Digging The Viola Crayola
Avatar 1:59pm Tony Coulter:

@ Steveo: It'll be our secret.
Avatar 2:00pm TDK60:

Been wearing sneakers, jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts since forever. // I think the coast is clear: no Prog Cops in sight...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Rich in Washington:

The guitar on this reminds me of steve hillage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Rich in Washington:

Polyrock had a Philip Glass on keyboards. Not THE Philip Glass, though?
Avatar 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

Yes -- the same.
Avatar 2:01pm βrian:

I once turned down a job because they required waitstaff to wear polo shirts. I have this psychic allergy to them, somehow.
Avatar 2:02pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Philip Glass was their producer and guested on keyboards here and there.
Avatar 2:04pm Tony Coulter:

RE: The Viola Crayola: they met a very sad end. Most of the band was killed in a car crash after releasing that one album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm steveo:

great set; not sure why prog feels like a guilty pleasure, but I'm ready to own it
Avatar 2:09pm TDK60:

steveo: Prog is hunted down by the Prog Police; be careful.
Avatar 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

Well, I will be exposing you all to possible arrest for the rest of this set.
Avatar 2:15pm northguineahills:

Off to lunch in the pouring rain, very strange!
Avatar 2:15pm northguineahills:

Ariel, not to be confused w/ Ariel Pink or a certain mermaid.
Avatar 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

See yerz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Rich in Washington:

That's sad about Viola Crayola. From what you played, they sounded great.
Avatar 2:16pm TDK60:

Ariel Pink probably likes this already
Avatar 2:16pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Yeah, they were great. Only one member survived, I believe.
Avatar 2:19pm Tony Coulter:

Both Wolfgang Dauner and Eberhard Weber were in Et Cetera (on now).
Avatar 2:22pm Tony Coulter:

The vocalist here is Pascale Son of Cos.
Avatar 2:26pm TDK60:

Good stuff, never heard.
  2:31pm Psychspaniolos:

this one is excellent.......Oboe too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Rich in Washington:

sort of reminds me of Exploding Hearts, here in Portland. Nearly every member died in a car crash, right after garnering a lot of positive music press attention.
  2:37pm Dean:

OTEME is almost Poulencian.
Avatar 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

Or Milhaudian.
  2:38pm Dean:

Yes! In fact, I name-checked Poulenc, but I was actually thinking of Chemine du Roi Rene by Milhaud.
Avatar 2:41pm quinn:

Avatar 2:43pm Tony Coulter:

Quinn! Just in time for the Italian stuff!
Avatar 2:46pm northguineahills:

Opus Avantra, new to me!
  2:49pm Psychspaniolos:

  2:55pm Dean:

More Milhaud and Poulenc!
  2:58pm Psychspaniolos:

perfetto!.......Thanks a lot Tony...and all radio friends
Avatar 2:59pm northguineahills:

Thanks Tony!
Avatar 2:59pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, everyone! See you next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm steveo:

thanks, Tony!
