"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

That new Holger Czukay set looks epic.
Avatar 9:15am TDK60:

Nice to pass on the usual intro for once. CCR, the Bay Area band that sounded Louisianan. CAN: climbing the WFMU charts.

Good Can tune thanks!

I swear I just heard this song in a film the other day. Maybe it was the Rajneesh doc?

@TDK60 gee whiz I'd never have guessed. So much for sharing thoughts on a comments board. I'll go back to not posting and just listening; thanks ever so much.

@TDK60: can confirm ;)

I on the other hand can ID almost any voice, but can't make head or tails of the words of lyrics, even in plaintive folk songs until I hear it for the nth time.

@Leelee: all honest commentary is welcome here.

For some people, this is / was the last bastion of social media; Not only do we get to listen to music we don't get to hear anywhere else, but there's this sense of community as well. Learning new stuff all the time: listening to awesome music = silently lurking. I'm out.

The one time I could have seen Cecil Taylor perform, I never even heard about the show until weeks after. My friend said everyone bailed at intermission, like it was just too much for them. What the hell were they expecting?
  10:00am Vixo:

Unit Structures is such a killer record!!!!!
Avatar 10:03am TDK60:

Only saw Taylor briefly at Ornette Coleman's public memorial a few years ago. Other players too.
  10:04am Anthony!:

Saw CT play with Jerry Garcia once.
Avatar 10:04am John Allen:

anthony! wins
  10:08am Anthony!:

at the time I was a punk ass hippie college student who thought "who is that black dude playing with garcia?" Thought the pairing was strange. I am going to find a bootleg for that show and share it with you guys.
  10:09am bill:

can you play conquistador w/bill dixon
Avatar 10:09am Wild Neil||Peace All:

From Wikipedia about Cecil Taylor: Classically trained, Taylor is generally acknowledged as having been one of the pioneers of free jazz. His music is characterized by an extremely energetic, physical approach, producing complex improvised sounds, frequently involving tone clusters and intricate polyrhythms. His piano technique has been likened to percussion, for example described as "eighty-eight tuned drums" (referring to the number of keys on a standard piano).[7] He has also been described as "like Art Tatum with contemporary-classical leanings".
Avatar 10:12am Wild Neil||Peace All:

CT died yesterday, by the way.
  10:12am Anthony!:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Anthony! - DJ Jeff Conklin might also be interested in that bootleg. He's on at midnight early Mondays.
  10:15am Anthony!:

YEp thought of that. BTW if any of you deadheads need shows, I have them all.
Avatar 10:17am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Anthony!-ALL of them?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am George of Troy:

I saw CT perform solo and in a duet improvisation with Pauline Oliveros about 10 years ago. It was at a posh opening gala for a newly-constructed performing arts center, and let's just say that most of the drunken bougie revelers didn't know what hit them once the duet improv set began.
Avatar 10:19am TDK60:

Funny, George. Wonder how Oliveros mixed with Taylor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Booz:

Cecil, man. He will never stop giving me life.
  10:20am Anthony!:

@wild neil, every show that was recorded and circulated as a bootleg. About 2500 shows. Not including Jerry Garcia Band shows/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am !ke:

Indeed, Doug is. He compared one CT record to losing his virginity, even. I was like, um, yeah, I definitely never heard that one.

Avatar 10:25am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Missed the Cecil jams. But do carry on. Am witchu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Tome:

*** Cecil Taylor was a Revolutionary artist who pushed jazz piano to it’s outer reaches. He was fearless. He was bare knuckled intellect and raw heart. He built an international audience completely outside of the constraints & vagaries Of Fashion. Cecil Taylor was a True American.*** <-- Vernon Reid
  10:28am Anthony!:

LOL on my way to the office I was listening to Toto IV. Now Chaos
Avatar 10:29am Rev. Turnip Druid:

A co-worker ages ago sniffed me out as a weirdo & insisted I try Cecil Taylor. It took a couple of spins but when it hooked, it definitely hooked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am George of Troy:

@TDK60: It was fun. They were clearly "listening" to each other. Pauline especially was experimenting with the acoustics of the hall, rolling and spinning around on stage in an office chair, playing her accordion.
Avatar 10:33am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Anthony! I sent you an email. I would like a Dead show please.

  10:37am Anthony!:

@ wild neil. I will get that to you when I get home. FLAC or MP3?
Avatar 10:41am bigkafka:

thankyou thankyou for the cecil set. i only saw him perform once, in SF in 2000/2001. i was in college and don't think i had ever seen anything quite that "out" at the time. but i also hadn't seen anything as direct and immediate—or anyone who was so completely, physically present (if that makes sense) in their playing.
Avatar 10:46am John Allen:

cecil was a great danceer. after passing on the last ornette show i could have ever seen, i made sure to see cecil at whitney in 2016 w/ oxley and min tanaka & that group.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Rob (Jerzcity):

I'm a big fan of the nature sounds with music - check out Ogurusu Norihide if you get a chance. It's a bit more minimal (or a lot as this develops) , but realllll nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Passaic River Blues:

@Rob: thank you for the tip. Definitely will investigate.
Avatar 10:49am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Anthony!-Thanks, man! I guess FLAC, I just got VLC player for my phone. How big is the FLAC file?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Gordon FM:

This was cool on Wild, Wild, West.
Avatar 10:52am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Anthony-I have space issues, so please make it MP3. Thanks, man!
  11:03am Au Pair Evie, Amersfoort NL:

My kids just told me that Im listening to Weird
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am sphere:

@ Evie - who knows? weird can spread from person to person. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am ɨkɛ:

You talk about friends of like Sandy Denny, Shirley Collins, Dana Gillespie, Ralph McTow, and Michael Gibbs who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are.
Avatar 11:08am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Yeah, I can take the MP3 on my laptop and burn it to a CD rom. THAT would work, right! I could play that on a CD player on my stereo?
I cannot. So I will get Audacity, download it and go from there to audio CD.
Avatar 11:10am TDK60:

I remember who Sandy Denny was, how could I forget?

Really loving this Tor Lundvall. John, I was very curious about that Patty Waters show. Was it as amazing as I'd hoped it might be (I couldn't make it, dammit!)
  11:21am Mark Williams:

@Ike - am I right in that Angela Nagle shut her twitter down? I was wondering how much hate mail she must've gotten for that book.
