A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

The DJ's laughter sounds like a certain community activist I know...
  10:45am Rob W:

So fantastic! Here's a track list (I think)...

  10:45am Mark Williams:

Linda Lee - this is a Sound Dimension instrumental. Name escapes me. Winston Francis did "California Dreaming" before that. This now is Jerry Jones, an American singer who was in Kingston for a while. She did a lot of covers, and I think this is one.
Avatar 10:45am northguineahills:

@uıʇsn∀: WFMU goes meta-radio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am mb:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Passaic River Blues:

@NGH: The internet is saying the DJ is Winston "The Whip" Williams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Linda Lee:

ok what is this amazing instrumental? i didn't catch it.
Avatar 10:53am Chris from DC:

Was just about to ask that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Linda Lee:

earnest ranglin .. ok .. didn't catch the name. must know all.
  10:54am clapper:

He’s the Austin Powers of reggae radio baby!!!
Yeah baby yeah!!!
  10:54am Mark Williams:

the observation I have about this is that in 1977, Studio One was living off its old reputation. All these tracks are about 6-8 years old at this point. The "new" Jamaican music of 1977 was vastly different and reflected the rawness of the poverty and political warfare on the streets at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Jаson:

Rob W posted the link to the tracklist above; Less Problem (Ernest Ranglin/Sound Dimension)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Passaic River Blues:

Horace, flawless as always.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Linda Lee:

just a matter of unfamiliar rhythm. if i listened to him all the time i'd get the titles & artists easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Linda Lee:

is it because i'm white? :-D
  Swag For Life Member 10:58am tadpoles:

Great stuff Trouble. Takes me back to listening to Phillip Smart on (I think) WBAI through the '80's. Shout out!
  10:59am Lucky:

I believe the DJ is Winston Williams. There are "DJ" tracks out featuring him. "DJ's Choice" comes to mind.

@Magda-are you from Poland? My wife is from Poland and she went to a country music festival in Poland with Polish musicians. I had no idea! I am happy FMU plays country once in awhile, it would be cool if there was a country show. Here I listen to an OLD country show on AM radio in my car. My wife says AM is for old people.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Magda:

Well Anthony.....we need more skynard...like we the station needs another hole in the roof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Ike:

@WN & NGH, I was just about to mention that I really liked Betsy's old show back in the day. I think NGH is getting Becky & Betsy mixed up. They both did/do country. Betsy moved away, unfortunately. Betsy's show was even better IMHO. Archives are here: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Itzall Ablurr:

Wild Neil, if you really want to go deep check out my friend Julea Thomerson's WFMU archives "Diesel Smoke & Dangerous Curves". She's the best!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Magda:

Becky and Betsy do great country programs and McGasko did a stellar premium a few years ago of southern Gothic.

Thanks everybody! The Old Codger (is that really Ken F.?) played some too! Thank you , I LOVE country now.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Magda:

LOL Anthony, it's free form...listen to whatever you want, just not to nausea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Linda Lee:

beautiful Sly & Robbie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Magda:

Wild Neil...I apparently need a satellite to navigate because the government won't track me by phone...maybe by spies.
  11:25am Anthony:

NGH I live a few blocks from where the Freebird lounge used to be. I am trying to get it reopened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Linda Lee:

@Trouble ~ think you can sound like a studio one dj if you just end your sentences with 'uh??'
Avatar 11:27am northguineahills:

@Anthony: I know that place, never been there.

@Magada: It's my geography joke (I'm a geographer and a history nerd, use it on my Polish friends all the time).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Linda Lee:

what a beautiful show it's been. honestly.
  11:29am poo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Magda:

@northguineahills awesome...did not know you were a geographer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Linda Lee:

who doesn't like a silent poo! :-D
Avatar 11:31am northguineahills:

and I can't even spell or copy/paste my fellow WooMooers names correctly, d'oh!
Avatar 11:32am Trouble:

merci @ linda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Magda:

You and the rest of the world who cannot same my name correctly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Magda:

I plan on going by an acronym.
  Swag For Life Member 11:33am tadpoles:

Wild Neil @ 11:19...I always thought the Old Codger was Irwin n'est ce pas?
Avatar 11:35am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Tadpoles-I REALLY wanna get old Country 78rpm reissues or an actual no kidding victrola piece of furniture and go the whole 9 yards...they only last 2 minutes per side!
  11:35am Anthony:

Madge, I know what you mean. I’ve been listening to too much Sonic Youth lately. Had Daydream Nation and No star on heavy rotation. Too much VU and UFO. Hence my request for more Southern Rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Magda:

You mean the station doesn't wheel out an actual Old Codger?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Webhamster Henry:

The Old Codger is Courtney Edison. Oh alright, he's Irwin.

You country people might also like to check out Laura Cantrell's archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Magda:

Yes Toni, there are no 12 step programs to manage all addictions.
Avatar 11:37am northguineahills:

Icepack, that lucky bastard (watched the game during my lunch break yesterday).
  11:38am queems:

a rare bird
  11:39am Anthony:

Well Southern Rock will cure most additions to Hipster addictions. Give it a try sometime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Magda:

I have been doing more space rock. I do enjoy some southern jams occasionally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Magda:

And most hipster addictions will be cured with dose of "hey looser your not that cool". That would cure it.
Avatar 11:43am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Mr Airplane man is pretty trippy!
  11:44am Anthony:

Give the Allman Brothers a try. IMOER can hit the space rock and the southern jams points. Live at Fillmore East.
Avatar 11:44am northguineahills:

I didn't like Southern Rock until I moved to NYC. It was omnipresent when I grew up. It was only in Brooklyn, I noticed something was missing. (yes, I played Skynyrd at the downtown avant club Tonic).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Magda:

Mr. Airplane Man is acceptable southerny type rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am melinda:

@ngh "It was only in Brooklyn, I noticed something was missing" haha, I love that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am ⓔⓘⓚ:

@NGH, I know what you mean -- that's the kind of thing the jocks and normies (do we say "normies?") listened to in rural Maryland. Still not into it! Don't get it. Never understood why anybody would want to hear that on FMU. I came to FMU to get away from that. And to get away from corny Dusty Show type stuff.
Avatar 11:48am Trouble:

thanks for sitting in this morning! think spring!!!! pleaeeeze
  11:48am shangotheone:

Trouble - what a great show. You play list had me looking up your artist! Great for the my mind. Thank you for your mind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Magda:

Thank you Trouble!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Linda Lee:

thank you Trouble! still pretty wintry here in Ulster County, but you brought a little spring to life. brava!
Avatar 11:50am Chris from DC:

This Rose Mercie record is great. Been digging it on multiple shows.
  11:50am Anthony:

Eik... I am guessing what they were listening to was redneck music, not southern rock. The two are mostly not the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am melinda:

@eik sometimes the recontextualization helps. I don't feel that the station needs more southern rock but I like it when I hear some of it outside of the annoying commercial stations, sandwiched between non-obvious choices.
  11:51am poo thompson:

Hash brown, egg, toast...
Avatar 11:51am Trouble:

  11:51am Anthony:

Exactly what Melinda just said.
Avatar 11:53am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Neil Young was my gateway drug to country music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Linda Lee:

some of us are so far from corny normie it's fun to circle back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Magda:

Yes. Melinda....conscious choices in stringing music together.
Avatar 11:55am northguineahills:

Well, this band and song doesn't leave any geocultural questions about its origins. Merci, Trouble!
Avatar 11:57am Wild Neil||Peace All:

When I had Polish "royalty" visiting I made a point to play some Merl Haggard just to fly the educated redneck flag.
Avatar 11:57am Wild Neil||Peace All:

well, "nobles".
  11:57am Anthony:

And it is worthwhile to note that all major genres of American music were birthed in the South. I am just a southerner proud of my culture.
Avatar 11:58am northguineahills:

@Anthony: As you know, there are self-described progressive rednecks and redneck hippies. Heck, when exploring for a random bar for my bday off the beaten path, I found a gay redneck bar. I had a blast. (as a geographer, I'm always exploring).
Avatar 11:58am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Anthony-hey, I think the civil war was about an overly powerful federal government oppressing people. Thoughts? I am NOT being ironic.
  11:58am exile-on-hicks-st:

Bye @trouble. Hope to be here with you (and all) next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Itzall Ablurr:

Anthony- you mean Jazz? or Rock 'n Roll? or Country? or the Blues, perhaps? Maybe you were referring to Bluegrass? Or... etc, etc. Right on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Passaic River Blues:

@Anthony: That's an inaccurate statement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Priscilla:

Thank you Trouble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Linda Lee:

Anthony means birthed, not necessarily developed. that can be true.
Avatar 12:01pm Jeff Moore:

Thanks as always, Trouble!
  12:03pm Anthony:

Your saying that does not negate the fact of what I said. And I think the civil war was fought to end slavery. Plantation owners may have used the northern oppression argument to appease their conscious, but I never bought it.
