  12:17pm MONEYBAG$:

Man how did I forget about this track? used to play it a bunch
Avatar 12:18pm TDK60:

Hello Duane. (Survived Ken's show partially mentally intact.) Don't know if it's bad form to talk about other shows. Must check my WFMU Etiquette Brochure.
Avatar 12:23pm TDK60:

Wow, a remix of a classic. Still have the 'Songs in the Key of Life' LP. Sadly, I recall this day then, was in H.S. and outraged.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Rob (Jerzcity):

this is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm chris:

hey, Duane and folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm chris:

April 4, 1967 -
"I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a “thing-oriented” society to a “person-oriented” society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered." mlk50.org...
  12:26pm Morphe:

Duane.. when I heard you speak ..MLK today... I was thinking you would/should play this.. I was going towrite but I never ask for requests..
Thanks... Simon y Morphe
Jamacian STREET Proverb: ME Want Peace and Love -
Avatar 12:30pm TDK60:

I think MLK would be surprised at the lack of progressive transformation here, this country. Half a century, geez.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@TDK - Yes, and certainly the backwards direction the country has taken over the last 15 months.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Cliff back in the U.S.S.A.:

"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death..." - from chris's link
Avatar 12:38pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Thanks for playing this Nina Simone song Duane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm adampsyche:

lovely set duane
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Arne:

Thanks indeed, Duane! This makes me cry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Krys O.:

Wonderful and heart-wrenching show, Duane. Thank you.
Avatar 12:41pm TDK60:

Got to hear MLK speak on April 15, 1967. We marched from the Sheep Meadow down to the UN, against Vietnam War. The day looked the same as today, gray-cloudy. Heard MLK's speech, crowd too big to see. Also Stokely Carmichael, others, spoke. I was 15.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm the Master:

Thank you @Chris for the link to that MLK quote.
Avatar 12:43pm Cheri Pi:

Wonderful tribute Duane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Passaic River Blues:

Very necessary right now. Thank you, Duane. RFK's speech on 4/4/1968 in Indianapolis always gets me, too.

Avatar 12:46pm northguineahills:

One of those days I wish I could clicky star comments....

  12:48pm SeanG:

yeah man
  12:50pm Mr C:

This is really jammin' Nice pull Duane! Assume it's Earl Young etc..
Avatar 12:52pm Duane:

Mr. C: THanks. Yes that's Earl Young on Drums, Norman Harris, Bobby Eli on Guitar, Ronnie Baker on Bass!Leon Huff on RHodes
Avatar 12:56pm TDK60:

And he would be out there walking with the high school kidz on guns, the black life matters people in Sacramento, the teachers in Oklahoma; I'm sure.
  12:58pm emily:

great show today (as usual). is usually only can listen to archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Passaic River Blues:

@TDK60: Absolutely. Why was he in Memphis on 4/4/1968? Supporting and organizing with striking sanitation workers.
  1:07pm qwest:

Thank you so much, Duane. Martin Luther King, Jr is definitely a hero of mine. As are the marchers on Selma and the kids at the Woolworth counter. I think about them a lot. They stood up for my rights and freedoms more than anyone else.
Avatar 1:07pm Little Danny:

Hey Duane, hey all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Ken From Hyde Park:

In the past, I'd try to catch 91.3 from Vassar College on MLK's birthday. They had a remix playing along with his I Have a Dream speech.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Michael 98145:

thanks for the words and the music, DJ Duane
Avatar 1:12pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm LAZCAD:

Great words of wisdom Duane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Passaic River Blues:

@Ken: WVKR! I think that's the Fingers Inc. remix. When I was in high school, there was a VKR DJ who used to mix up long outtakes of dialogue from "Roots" and intersperse great stuff, like La Funk Mob, Silver Apples, fuzzy hip hop instrumentals. It was beautiful.
  1:17pm CedarPlanck:

does anyone know the sample in this Moody Man track that is the flourishing piano part at the beginning, its a well known soul/funk jam . . . please!

what rbx said...
Avatar 1:22pm TDK60:

Thanks for your thoughts Duane. This is why I love WFMU. Free form freedom. There's often much silliness on the comments board & shows but also time for serious reflection.
  1:22pm CedarPlanck:

Duane: Thank you!
Avatar 1:25pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

Hey all! I heard MLK kept a pistol for "personal protection" for he feared for his life. I am pretty sure our government killed him, tragically.
Avatar 1:25pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

Moodymann is pretty insanely rapid.
Avatar 1:28pm northguineahills:

I love those Pharoahy/Alice Coltraney bells in that Moodyman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm LAZCAD:

Black Mahogani is a start-to-finish album (at least for me)
Avatar 1:31pm TDK60:

Pharoah playing Le Poisson Rouge Apr. 19, for those in NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm chris:

this Laolu & Mr Raoul K cut is seriously badass
Avatar 1:37pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

Regarding the MLK pistol: a quick internet search revealed that after his house was bombed he applied for concealed carry, but he was turned down by the police because he was black.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@PRB - Cool! WFMU fill-in DJ Tiffany used to DJ at WVKR when she attended school there.
Avatar 1:42pm TDK60:

A Rhodes piano? Ever tried to carry one? Wow
Avatar 1:45pm TDK60:

Well, I guess all or most pianos are heavy anyway.
  1:48pm queems:

oh boy! sopranos
Avatar 1:49pm Little Danny:

Ahhh this Stark Reality
Avatar 1:54pm Little Danny:

@Duane: I think I first heard this Hudson People on your post-Election 2016 show, which basically saved my life that week
Avatar 1:57pm Duane:

Little Danny: It's great! Yeah, I haven't played it since then? I'm surprised!
Avatar 2:09pm Polyus:

The new London jazz scene is getting a lot of attention all of a sudden, even a piece in Rolling Stone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Beast of Boonton:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Michael 98145:

well said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Beast of Boonton:

(W.C Fields)
  2:23pm queems:

hooray indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Krys O.:

Ooh, this has me thinking about Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band from 2009.
  2:38pm Berndo411:

play that funky ish!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Michael 98145:

smooth ... smoothly .... blogfiles.wfmu.org...
