This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Evening, all!!

Hello Scraps!
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Hello James!
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

How goes it, brothers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Scraps (h’m):

(I like the little draw bag helpfully labeled “gold dust” for the viewer)
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

better than a dollar sign, even
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Scraps (h’m):

Sure! More specific.
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

I am devoted to these movies, btw

Lone Wolf and Cub I mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Scraps (h’m):

I wanna vulture
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Scraps (h’m):

Or a turkey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm doctorjazz:

Hey all! (or at least the 2 of you).
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

even for De Wolfe, which always has punchy covers, this is a real knuckle sandwhich: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Scraps (h’m):

Never seen any Lone Wolf and Cub. Immediately I think, though: if he’s got a Cub, Wolf is not Lone.
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

also, this cover is an all-timer: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 7:13pm hyde:

hello. is that a Jack Kirby western comics panel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Scraps (h’m):

Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

that's the thing, they're like metaphysically bonded and have become sort of one entity. it's an intentional paradox, and it's awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Scraps (h’m):

Loud Piano!
Avatar 7:14pm hyde:

aw crap. i missed baby cart in peril? that is a fave Lone Wolf and Cub flick for me.
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde! no it's just 2 different comics panels i spliced together
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

me too brother. i think it's one of the only ones Misumi dodn't direct, but it's one of the coolest all the same
Avatar 7:16pm hyde:

it sure looks like Kirby!
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

Kirby is so cool
Avatar 7:16pm northguineahills:

I'm here, just still at work.
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

NGH, great to have you in our ranks my man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm doctorjazz:

Great set! (still at work too, NGH, hopefully leaving soon).
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

thanks doc, much more to come! slightly longer than usual opening set i think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm doctorjazz:

Someone had Ol' Man River on their mind...
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

btw, hyde, stick around a bit and we'll hear a bit more LW&C possibly
Avatar 7:22pm hyde:

can i share? celebrating tonight as the three month temp gig i took to get out of upstate New York at the Fine Arts Library at (Insert Prestigious Ivy League School in Cambridge Here) has morphed into an offer for a two year slot with full benefits. if i say fuck yeah! i do hope you'll forgive me.
Avatar 7:23pm northguineahills:

wicked news, hyde, congrats!
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

fuck yeah hyde
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

just fuck yeah
Avatar 7:25pm βrian:

Yes, indeed, Hyde. Congrats.
Avatar 7:28pm hyde:

Avatar 7:30pm Flash Strap:

this particular Clark-Hutchinson has such a phenomenal early sludgy-with-an-edge psych sound. great record
  7:30pm ike:

Hey hey hi hi
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:31pm βrian:

... but I've never reckoned well with that "upstate" means.
Would that be north of the geo center, Utica?

I mean, Albany seems way downstate to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm doctorjazz:

Congrats Hyde!
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

Hi Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm doctorjazz:

Cool Dylan!
Avatar 7:39pm northguineahills:

Come on βrian, everyone knows anything north of 14th St is upstate!
Avatar 7:42pm βrian:

But Google says there *is* no 14th street in Albany.
Avatar 7:50pm βrian:

Librarians represent!
Avatar 7:50pm hyde:

@βrian hah. i lived in Woodstock/Saugerties. As someone from Mass., i consider that "upstate". a lot of people from NY think that's ridiculous!
Avatar 7:52pm northguineahills:

I always loved taking a day holiday to upstate Manahattan.
Avatar 7:52pm βrian:

@hyde: Well, those people *are* ridiculous!

(But aren't we all?)
Avatar 7:52pm hyde:

i love this western too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm doctorjazz:

These Dylan tunes "themes" always make me feel like he forgot to finish the song...
Avatar 7:54pm hyde:

ACK! Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is playing in 35mm here in May!
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

I saw it on 35 myself at the Harvard film archive some years back
Avatar 7:55pm βrian:

Now, if there were an "upstate" surcharge on all transactions upstate, I expect those boundaries might get mighty flexible.
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

@doc: that unfinished, elliptical quality extends to the film & its editing as well, which is why i love it so much. it's like a western Satyricon in dream logic
Avatar 7:56pm hyde:

@Flash i've only seen it on tv. may have to go to that.
Avatar 7:57pm northguineahills:

Well, I live in north-central FL, it's not quite north FL, (Floridigia), and not quite central FL, (Orlando), so, it's stuck w/ this awkward moniker.
Avatar 7:58pm hyde:

@HFA have seen many a good western at HFA tho. I saw Budd Boetticher speak there one time.
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

highly recommended! a weird film where every one of its flaws and compromises only strengthens it somehow, despite all

Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

some atmosphere on this track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm melinda:

serious atmosphere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm melinda:

like Morricone with added weirdness
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

might well be the same whistler as on Morricone

(Alessandro Alessandroni, aka Braen!)
  8:24pm slawooy:

Fantastic show! Just thought how well would Bohren club of Gore fit and detour here
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

hi slawooy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm melinda:

@Flash I think Alessandroni was on a Morricone Island show.
Avatar 8:26pm northguineahills:

Yeah, that Peymont ruled!
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

wow what a get!
Avatar 8:29pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

DAKTARI is so good
Avatar 8:59pm hyde:

i've said it before, but i was a BIG Daktari fan as a kid
  9:00pm Gary via app:

Hey, explorers!
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

I remember that! I thought of you as I planned to play it
Avatar 9:01pm Little Danny:

Man your shows always make me overhaul my record selection, Flash
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Doug Schulkind:

I remember watching Daktari on the boob tube. Even then I was BONKERS for that music!
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

i've actually never seen it, i just love the record
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

Hi Gary! Ha, LD! I'm glad I don't have to follow you, or i'd have the same pandemonium
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

this is such a cool soundtrack too – first time i heard it was on LD's first or second show, if i remember right. Just scored a very good copy recently and have been getting further acquainted
Avatar 9:09pm Little Danny:

Nice, glad to be your Euro soundtrack dealer for once!
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

you played it, i liked it, i looked it up – when i saw the cover I knew I had to find a copy!
Avatar 9:13pm Little Danny:

It sounds even better when you play it. That always happens
Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

haha no way, i remember you did such a good segue from it and into a Broadcast track that I had to write you an email
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:18pm hyde:

love this Peru record
  9:18pm Dean:

Avatar 9:19pm Flash Strap:

that's pretty good too, hi dean
  9:20pm Dean:

I mean, Peru.
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

i want to hear that record, Dean. Have you? is it good
  9:22pm Gary via app:

Love the space music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm melinda:

Digging the sounds.
Avatar 9:23pm jaywbabcock:

Really digging everything. Any chance this show could be extended to...oh...16 hours in length?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm melinda:

That sounded like we stumbled into the dance lounge of the interplanetary space ship.
  9:25pm Dean:

It's pretty good, indeed. You should know, though, that it is in a progressive rock vein. It features none other than Bill Bruford, post-Yes, and Paul Fishman, who went on to form Men without Hats, who scored a hit with "Safety Dance." I remember buying the record at Cheapo Cheapo Records (on Rupert Street) in London in '76, when it was released. I wanted it purely for the Bruford connection. But it's enjoyable, and kinda weird as "concept" albums go.
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

Hey Babcock! Glad we're all digging together
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

@Melinda: maybe, in a way, we did?
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

@Dean: huh, sounds like I better check it out, damn the torpedoes
  9:28pm Dean:

Call it interstellar exotica.
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

In that case, I better be all over it!
Avatar 9:46pm hyde:

out early tonight. thanks1
Avatar 9:48pm Flash Strap:

have a great one, Hyde. a huge congrats, I'm happy for you in a big way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm melinda:

Wigwam makes me think of The Royal Tenenbaums. Nice to hear the whole song.
Avatar 9:54pm Little Danny:

Thanks Evan, another brilliant episode!
  9:55pm Dean:

Wigwam makes me think of shopping for LPs at a now defunct department store in Whittier c.1970. It was the only reason I almost bought the album.
Avatar 9:56pm Little Danny:

Why don't y'all curl up with the Cool Blue Flame? It begins in a few moments: wfmu.org...
