A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@TDK60 Indeed we are. And in accordance with the title of today's show, the novel I am reading is Greatest Hits, by Laura barton; about the life of a (fictional) musician. What's everyone else reading?

Good morning, Trouble and everyone. First rule of book club: talk to everyone about book club. I'm reading Pat Conroy's "The Prince of Tides" and in wonderment at every word. Genius. Nothing short. I miss that guy.
Avatar 9:24am TDK60:

Oh, this one from Eno; I still have this cassette, it works! Some say ambient is background only, but this is emotional to me.
Avatar 9:25am themutante:

Lovely blend to this opening set.
Avatar 9:25am northguineahills:

y mi tambien, TDK60

/my version is on vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Linda Lee:

ahhh... the most relaxing recording ever made. thank you Trouble!
Avatar 9:28am TDK60:

Almost never read novels. Usually non-fiction: politics, history. Reading a Murray Bookchin at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Adrian in London:

@TDK60 I think Eno said ambient can be background but also the subject of deep emotional listening, so you've got it right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am melinda:

Great snow music. I recently bought this cd and the guy at the register said he has just listened to it while at an airport and it was quite the experience.
Avatar 9:30am TDK60:

i'm staying at a home with almost no books ~ while my collection sits in storage in various places. ergo rereading Garcia Marquez ".. Cholera." not as surreal as i recall!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Linda Lee:

that could be the actual reason to read fiction, tomasz. the world is too urgent for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Adrian in London:

@Trouble Have you read A Manual for Cleaning Women, short stories by Lucia Berlin? It's incredibly good. I'm trying to limit myself to one story a day, but it's difficult.
Avatar 9:33am TDK60:

Oh, it's The Ecology of Freedom--that Bookchin; massive work.

this is so pretty

  9:36am David in London:

I’m currently reading The Master and His Emissary by Iain McGilchrist, about the two hemispheres of the brain. Taxing but utterly fascinating. Would nicely explain /support that Eno concept of what ambient music is doing.
Avatar 9:36am TDK60:

Good to hear that several folks are still reading books.

Trouble, I couldn't find Happiness in our library system. Ended up request Aminatta Forna's 'The Hired Man'. Finished Jeanette Walls ' The Glass Castle' last week, time to pick up another title. WFMU- come for the tunes, stay for the great book suggestions.
Avatar 9:48am themutante:

Aminatta Forna was born in Bellshill? How exotic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Linda Lee:

sure, if you know a landowner. most of the wide open spaces are owned by NYC & NYS, as we're in the watershed & the interest is in suppressing development, to keep city water clean. there's no chemical filtration at all & they'd like to keep it that way. no camping allowed on public lands here, even though we're actually a state park!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Vivian:

Urgh, requesting, not request. Hope DJ Icepack is Barcelona bound later today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Adrian in London:

I'm trying to go out for lunch but the sounds are gluing me to my chair. Play some Oasis or someting so I can break away in horror please!

Avatar 9:52am TDK60:

Good enough reason! Watershed. Plenty of camping elsewhere. NY is a big state.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Linda Lee:

there are public campgrounds, but they're not places you'd necessarily like to hang out. most court cases here in town originate in the camping areas. sad but true.

always reading novels. Just finishing Mann's Dr Faustus. Such wonderful complexity. In between- Eric Bogosian's Operation Nemesis, non fiction- if you really want to understand WW1 I recommend it. And it is not unrelated to Mann's Faustus
Next is Richard Wright's -Pagan Spain. Was supposed to go to Madrid in February to visit friends and practice my espanol. But another time maybe in Nov.
Love your show!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am melinda:

@sugarplumfairywolf I've been thinking that too. I found a 45 of Cher singing it but haven't listened yet. New to me but maybe not others, who knows.

I think it's been four years since I've read fiction. I usually read non-fiction, music, critical theory, cosmology, linguistics, spatial theories (including urban), and history. I have too much on my queue as it is. (history and music make the majority of my reading).

Gosh, thanks @steveo! I may have good taste in book *descriptions* but I rarely get a chance to read the actual books, ha ha. I *did* just finish "Good Guys" by Steven Brust but I'm not sure I'd recommend it. It's a B or B minus. It starts strong but doesn't quite live up to the beginning, or the description.

The broken clock is still valuable as long as you look at it the two times every day that it is correct.
I’ve tried the same with the supreme leader to no avail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Itzall Ablurr:

Please eschew "SO". Listen to very young, inexperienced NPR reporters for a minute or two. They respond to EVERY line of inquiry during the story with the dreaded... SO. It's a mental placeholder akin to "ummm" or "well," but it sounds pretentious to my ears. As if the next words out of their mouths are worthy of laser focus.

@Magda-I think Facebook is too much like soundbites. Email is under rated imho.

@WN, I'm just gonig to lie to Fa(r)cebook and constantly tell it I'm a bank employee who dresses like a chicken and hands out free pens shaped like chickens and puts up the dancing streamer thingies in front of car dealerships and other fake info about myself. Also I give free hugs but then secretly slip bank pens into people's pockets. And I'm a useless spy for Lichtenstein's Ministry of Potatoes.

@ßrain - yup , that is often my leading indicator. Is Mendota open yet?

@Itzall I hadn't really given it much thought but you're right.

Sounds like Blonde Redhead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am tomasz.:

here's a few cool facts about Future Pilot AKA. 1. he lives in Glasgow, home of me. 2. he works, or at least used to as a driving instructor. 3. he was asked to play bass on tour with Kylie Minogue but had to turn it down because he had prior commitments to his driving pupils. 4. the album he did with the Bill Wells Octet is really excellent

I hope Ms. Prochet is far along the road to recovery. Felt terrible for her last year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear melinda, it's a personal thing but it just seems to be an annoying trend in language, much like "Rilly!" or "Y'know", et al. from the past. It will be with us forever I'm sure. I bonded (as if) with Pseu Braun over this very discussion a few weeks ago! She delivered an enjoyable screed about it on one of her shows and I concurred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am melinda:

I decided to live on the edge and have some tasty black tea, but 1/2 cup seems to have made me agitated. I remember caffeine making me happy when I was drinking it regularly but maybe I just read the wrong email while consuming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Adrian in London:

Good grief, this whole show has been incredible. Thanks, Trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am tomasz.:

in linguistics they're called "discourse markers". they're pretty much a permanent feature, yeah.
Avatar 11:07am TDK60:

If everyone is in a such hurry today why do folks say, "Right, right, right"? We used to just say it once.

Tea usually tastes like plain hot water to me, which is too bad. I used to like it. Maybe my triple espressos have incinerated my taste buds.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Magda:

@Wild Neil It's too many options. I think email and text are good standards and need to be synced. Next thing is smoke signals on the roof. That is how we will connect with one another.
Avatar 11:10am TDK60:

Neil: Campgrounds? In reference to Linda Lee earlier? She didn't elaborate but I assume she means bad behavior.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Itzall Ablurr:

haha. Yeah, I know melinda that was such a tender moment... I do think she's awesome but wow is she scratchy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am melinda:

@Neil I used to do that to, but I realized for me the side effects outweighed the benefits eventually, and I'm trying to get to the root of why I'm always groggy.

Happy Modern Morning, all. Late entry to the book discussion - in the middle of 3 or 4 books as usual, most recent is David Goodwin's Left Bank of the Hudson, which I learned about on this show. Ursula Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness is waiting for me at the library.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am melinda:

@TDK I tried it a while back, the effect was similar to tea, since they both have relaxing constituents. Less edge than coffee, but I'm pretty sensitive. I think if I focus on things that make me happy I'll be ok. I had fired off a response to a group mailing from an online health guy who pissed me off, which is out of character for me so I blamed the tea :D

steveo: Hard to say. Her most famous ("Left Hand" and "Dispossessed") are from the '70s. Maybe try "Four Ways To Forgiveness"? 4 short stories on issues like slavery, sexism. Most of her sci-fi books are political. She also wrote fantasy.

I've been working through the Earthsea Cycle. Really really enjoyable young adult fantasy literature. The only thing "YA" about it is maybe the accessibility of the language but the content is solid, affirming stuff. Beautifully written and realized worlds.

What sphere said!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am sphere:

A great place to start with Le Guin is a late-period book called "Changing Planes." It's a standalone book that is an easy read. If you like that, take the deep dive!

@Wild Neil: What a way to shed pounds, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am ⓔⓘⓚ:

@WN, I think that was a funny rumor they started for publicity. IIRC they actually burned up a bunch of their records (mainly as a PR stunt) which were banned for copyright violations due to illicit sampling (as you can hear in this song). They were early masters of starting crazy rumors for publicity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am melinda:

@eik this is the same as KLF? They did a number with Tammy Wynette and I've always been curious about the rest of their output.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am tomasz.:

nah, they literally actually burned one million pounds

what you said about them burning the records is also true (the copyright dispute was with ABBA) but that was only a handful of albums. most of them were thrown into the North Sea off a ferry.
