New year!
  12:05am Anthony from North Florida:

Play some Skynrd dude.
  12:05am Agent Peter:

80's Skynyrd!

Is this thing on?
  12:06am Santos L Halper:

Slip inside the Ghetto, everyone.
Gonna be another great year here
Avatar 12:07am Adamsworth:

I wanted to hear Jeff sing a song :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08am sberger:

Morning/evening Jeff/all. Hope the marathon met it's goal, and great to have the regular show back on.
Avatar 12:08am Jeff Conklin:

Morning, all.

Next year, Adam.
Avatar 12:08am TDK60:

A personal question Mr DJ. Is it odd being on air just after the crashing end of WFMUstock?
Avatar 12:08am Adamsworth:

Dave Hill's singing George Michael was so good though.
Avatar 12:09am Jeff Conklin:

It's not weird at all. What's weird is there being people in the kitchen when I'm making my coffee....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09am pacific standard simon:

Jeff doing Grateful Dead song, maybe?
Avatar 12:10am TDK60:

Hope the coffee is strong and no inebriated Hoofers stumble in...
  12:10am Agent Peter:

Avatar 12:10am Adamsworth:

Did you yell at them to get the hell out at exactly 12:00? ha ha
Avatar 12:11am Jeff Conklin:

There's a small but vocal group of DJs who've been pushing me to do Touch of Grey....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11am pacific standard simon:

Ooh, mind reading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11am fleep:

Ah, normal, or what passes for it. Good evening.
Avatar 12:11am Adamsworth:

I'd like you to do...Shame on the Night by Dio
Avatar 12:12am Jeff Conklin:

@Adam: In my mind ha
Avatar 12:12am TDK60:

Chet Helms in the wings?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13am TomDash:

Ha! I was gonna type...you should have start the first tune post marathon with St Stephen or Dark Star. Instead you started with the greatest psychedelic song of all time..and THEN St. Stephen! Amazing!
Avatar 12:13am TDK60:

Dig the earlier, rawer Gratefuls.
Avatar 12:14am Jeff Conklin:

@TomDash- I considered starting with Stephen but wanted to cast a wider net for new listeners...
Avatar 12:14am Adamsworth:

Yeah I've listened to Slip Inside this House so many times back in the day, and hadn't in a while...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14am pacific standard simon:

"Box Of Rain"?
  12:14am Dan Bodah:

Nice version of St Steven. Cheers Jeff.
Avatar 12:15am Mattedpelt:

Hello, all
Avatar 12:15am Adamsworth:

I hate martial drums, I'm glad they didn't keep doing that regularly. This part rules though.
Avatar 12:15am khd:

touch of gray would be grayt
  12:16am wavy:

Perfect for this jagged acid come downs thanks Jeff
Avatar 12:16am Jeff Conklin:

What up, Dan Bodah!
  12:16am Peter in tappan:

Anyone know the date of this show?
Avatar 12:17am Jeff Conklin:

  12:17am Peter in tappan:

So good
  12:17am Agent Peter:

that's a yes
Avatar 12:18am Jeff Conklin:

The Dark Star preceding the Stephen is an all-timer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18am pacific standard simon:

I think Mickey Hart started out as a marching band drummer, so there's that.
  12:19am wavy:

Pro tip: don't kiss The Leprechaun on the lips
Avatar 12:19am TDK60:

Loved the martial drums on Hendrix's 1983. Mitch.
  12:19am jon in sparkill:

>>> "I considered starting with Stephen but wanted to cast a wider net for new listeners..."

Sucked me in :)
Avatar 12:20am Jeff Conklin:

Boom! Welcome, Jon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21am TomDash:

brilliant opening set Jeff...
  12:21am Agent Peter:

so crisp
Avatar 12:21am TDK60:

They're really peppy on this.
Avatar 12:23am slugluv1313:

good evening, Jeff and everyone!
yes, love the early Dead too -- fantastic version of St. Stephen
Avatar 12:24am Mattedpelt:

This rules
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24am Michael 98145:

confess to seeing the Dead at the Hollywood Bowl...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am Rory:

What everyone else is saying! Good stuff!
  12:25am Santos L Halper:

The boys were really going for it there
Avatar 12:26am Jeff Conklin:

@Michael: What show?
Avatar 12:26am TDK60:

Anyone know what the Avalon looked like inside?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26am TomDash:

was waiting for more International Harvester too...and bam!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27am Michael 98145:

... probably before 1973. you understand.
Avatar 12:27am Mattedpelt:

Fuck, I'm going to have to save money for the International Harvester box
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28am TomDash:

sadly off to bed, great start - will check in on the archive during daylight hrs tomorrow...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29am pacific standard simon:

10/12/68... I was in a horrible little apartment in North Hollywood, CA, probably working on model cars, avoiding homework, and thinking about my Halloween costume.
Avatar 12:29am Jeff Conklin:

International Harvester box is essential, I'd say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29am Rory:

My Dad told me earlier today/yesterday he saw The Stooges in '69. I said "How were they?". He said "I thought they sucked and the singer was thrashing around'. My father saw The Stooges thought they were terrible. :( That's like almost against the law, right?
Avatar 12:31am Jeff Conklin:

Oh man
  12:33am Santos L Halper:

Like Ivan the Terrible I'm sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33am Michael 98145:

good to see so many hearts and radios here tonite
Avatar 12:34am TDK60:

Been looking for an internal photo of the old Avalon, not found. Did find external photo, looks like a classy place.
Avatar 12:35am Jeff Conklin:

Gotta be something out there, TDK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35am Caryn:

I feel like most times if your parent would say they saw The Stooges live and loved them, that would be odd... Of course there are exceptions...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38am pacific standard simon:

I was in the Avalon, but it was after it was converted to a movie multiplex, so that doesn't count.
Avatar 12:38am TDK60:

Interesting that Avalon & Fillmore West were ballrooms, stand-up/dance halls. Fillmore East was a sit-down auditorium.
Avatar 12:39am Jeff Conklin:

My dad saw Incredible String Band and said they sucked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40am Nardo:

Yes, that International Harvester is now on my wish list. Hefty price tag as I can see on Forced Exposure.
Avatar 12:40am slugluv1313:

@ Rory -- well, not against "Dad" laws . . . but your Dad is YOUNG! young enough to NOT be from my Dad's generation -- DAMN!
my best friend in high school used to babysit for a couple who owned the second Velvet Underground LP -- by then (mid-1970s, my mid-teenage years) that album was like my Bible . . . when i asked about it, the wife said something like, "oh, that's all just noise" . . . !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40am sberger:

Avalon goo.gl...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41am pacific standard simon:

West coast rock palaces tended to be conversions from other things -- ice skating rinks, auto showrooms --too much cash outlay to add seats.
  12:43am zenkoan:

This is very gorgeous right here
Avatar 12:43am Jeff Conklin:

@Nardo: Worth it. 3 whole unreleased live LPs plus the first two. Cheaper than one original! Mastered from the tapes.
Avatar 12:43am TDK60:

Thanks sbergr. Interesting. That photo on the right with Bill Graham would have to be Fillmore East.
Avatar 12:43am slugluv1313:

Incredible String Band??!! what is WRONG with parents these days, hah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44am Rory:

My parents were simple hippies from Missouri. The Band, The Eagles, James Taylor. They didn't get into the heavy stuff. Then came Reagan...
Avatar 12:45am slugluv1313:

yes, cool photos!
@ TDK60 -- i remember that photo of Bill Graham from an old Fillmore commemorative-type magazine i got -- 1971, i think
Avatar 12:45am TDK60:

Even great bands can have so-so nights.
Avatar 12:45am TDK60:

Was at F.E. a few times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46am pacific standard simon:

The Fillmore West (NOT The Fillmore) has returned to its roots as an auto showroom, BTW.
Avatar 12:47am slugluv1313:

@ Rory -- oh gosh -- that explains it!
Avatar 12:47am Mattedpelt:

My parents loved Reagan's music, too
Avatar 12:48am TDK60:

DJ Jeff, you heard Henry Kaiser's version of Dark Star? I approached it skeptically but then my chin fell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54am Caryn:

For some reason, the only music my dad can't stand is reggae. Still haven't figured out why.
Avatar 12:55am Jeff Conklin:

I think I heard that Kaiser take back in the 90s, may need to revisit...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01am Caryn:

Off to work now, will check out the rest on the archives!
Avatar 1:02am TDK60:

Caryn: Tell yer dad he has to have his Wheedies to dig the Reggae. // Jeff, I loved this set, just what I needed--darnit, gotta work tomorrow...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02am Nardo:

@Jeff: Official release date for International Harvester is 4/20. I'm not into celebrating that particular "holiday", but I may have to touch base with my local record store and initiate a pre-order. May celebrate after all.
  1:07am Agent Peter:

Berkeley Community Theater; Marin Civic Center
Avatar 1:08am Mattedpelt:

This Yuzo Iwata lp is so good
  1:17am El Borba:

Jeff, in your opinion, if you were going to give a Grateful Dead album to someone who’s never heard one, which would it be?
Avatar 1:18am Jeff Conklin:

@Borba: I'd need to know what kind of music they listen to. If they like their folk/country rock, go American Beauty or Workingman's Dead. If they listen to a lot of psych, Live/Dead. If they love all of that, Europe 72.

Or first Garcia solo. Everyone can love that...
Avatar 1:19am Mattedpelt:

I feel like i want to hear bruce cockburn
  1:20am Eiderdown:

Good morning Jeff! Good morning y’all. Bummed I missed the Harvester track :(
  1:21am wavy:

I second the American Beauty and/or Workingman's Dead gateway. AB is just perfect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am Santos L. Halper:

Great stuff tonight Jeff, thanks! And I played the whole Shrunken Planet this morning; could listen to you and JD rap all day. G'night!
  1:21am El Borba:

They like the whole laid back vibe of music. The longer the tunes, the better. But they dig psych too. That all sounds great. Thanks, man.
Avatar 1:23am Mattedpelt:

It's goin down slow
  1:25am wavy:

Yeah this sounds great Jeff
  1:30am El Borba:

Thanks, wavy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33am pacific standard simon:

My go-to Dead album is the Skull and Roses, live '71. Good sample of material.
  1:35am wavy:

@El Borba no prob. My other answer would be "listen to Jeff's show" :)
  1:36am wavy:

*skull and roses is great! I was exposed via Europe 72 initially, which I feel is also a great place to start. Still sorta my favorite.
  1:38am exile-on-hicks-st (nee Geoff C):

I’m with you, @Wavy - at this time, Europe ‘72 is go-to. But I’ll check out Skull & Roses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39am pacific standard simon:

I like Europe 72 also, but it can be a little overwhelming for the novice. The closing of The Fillmore bootleg is pretty darn good, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42am pacific standard simon:

I have a copy of the illustrated edition of Omar Khayyam that the Skull and Roses artwork came from. Beautiful stuff.
  1:42am Eiderdown:

Holy crap, this new Yo La Tengo sounds amazing!!
  1:43am wavy:

Yeaaaah is this new Yo La Tengo?? Sounds so good
Avatar 1:44am Jeff Conklin:

Yes this new YLT is GREEEEAT
  1:46am Eiderdown:

Thought it was another Tuluum Shimmering track at first, ha ha. Think it was the drums...
Avatar 1:47am Mattedpelt:

Something about YLT, they're always life-affirming
Avatar 1:47am Eiderdown:

Ok...now switching from crappy iphone speaker to slightly less crappy computer speaker...wooooo
Avatar 1:48am Mattedpelt:

This is beautiful, reminds me of FSA
Avatar 1:48am Jeff Conklin:

Adam, dude, what...the...fuck
Avatar 1:52am Eiderdown:

ha...I know. If I could figure out a way to stream your show thru my stereo Id be stoked but Im a moron
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53am pacific standard simon:

Got the sub-woofer. Now where do I find a sub-mooer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56am pacific standard simon:

The theme to this show should be Pink Floyd's "Grandchester Meadows". In your mind, I mean. Not every week.
  1:58am carter:

loving the set jeff, i forgot what non marathon fmu is like
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04am pacific standard simon:

@Eiderdown - Stereo AUX cables are your friend. All computers have AUX output, and all stereos have AUX input.
  2:06am Rex Tillerson:

Fuck yes, I'm listening! I had some orange sunshine in the back of the freezer I'd been saving for my sunset years. Guess what? As of Friday, these are my sunset years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06am pacific standard simon:

I'm with you, Jeff, "US Blues" sucks, but it's probably the most memorable track from that album.
Avatar 2:09am Jeff Conklin:

Welcome, Rex!
Avatar 2:09am Jeff Conklin:

@carter: I forgot too but its coming back to me...
  2:10am wavy:

Sup Rex. Thoughts on US blues?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11am pacific standard simon:

Hmm, maybe I should pledge for YLT to play "Grandchester Meadows" next year. Wonder what they'd do.
  2:12am wavy:

I dunno. Scarlet Begonias is like one of the sweetest jams they ever wrote. Unbroken Chain is def in my top 5 Bobby tunes. To each his own, but I love that album :)
  2:13am wavy:

US Blues is a live tune. Doesn't make a ton of sense on that record; and yeah, it's pretty goofy but Man, they have far worse
Avatar 2:13am Eiderdown:

@pacific standard simon: you're right...gonna have to give that a try....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14am pacific standard simon:

@wavy - I mean, in the "classic rock radio" sense.
Avatar 2:14am Jeff Conklin:

US Blues isnt the worst, but its not worth a hundo
  2:15am Rex Tillerson:

I'm more of a "Dark Star" kind of guy, Wavy.
  2:16am carter:

feels crazy to say as just a listener but i feel like my whole life gets thrown into a salad mixer during the marathon. this set is brining me back to earth
  2:18am carter:

dark star 8/27/72 is my favorite dark star but ive only come into the dead recently.
  2:19am wavy:

Fair enough, Rex. Man after my own heart
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20am pacific standard simon:

In the same vein, I'll take "Living In The USA", by Chuck Berry, or MC5, or even Steve Miller (ha!), or Hawkwind's "Uncle Sam's On Mars" before I'd give a buck for "US Blues.
  2:20am wavy:

Yeah US Blues is worth about a buck. Very strange request haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22am pacific standard simon:

"i feel like my whole life gets thrown into a salad mixer during the marathon"

I might have to put that on my inbox at work next year.
  2:23am wavy:

* now imagine John Mayer doing an American Isol version of US Blues... with that voice. Actually, don't...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30am pacific standard simon:

...conversation stopper...
Avatar 2:32am Jeff Moore:

Ahh. Your show is just the right one to help us unclench from Marathon mania.
  2:34am wavy:

@simon hahahaha. Dead&Co in a nutshell. What an atrocity on wheels...
  2:35am wavy:

I, too, am glad the marathon is over. Pledged what I could though and I hope you guys made your goal. <3
Avatar 2:36am Jeff Conklin:

We're still short so if anybody didn't pledge its not too late.
  2:40am wavy:

Oh mannnnn... I'll see if I can scrape a bit more. Seriously, WFMU is life's blood
Avatar 2:42am Jeff Conklin:

Thanks, wavy. Every little bit helps...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43am pacific standard simon:

I'm a Secret Society, S4L kind of guy, but I'm looking to up that. Not enough to hit Y3K. It all helps a lot, folks. It aint over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50am pacific standard simon:

BTW, what is "ain't" supposed to be a contraction of? "Ai not"?
  2:55am wavy:

I'm trying to come down from a gnarly acid trip, Simon and you throw that one out? I just regained access to human language a few hours ago after dinner, and now you've got me totally stumped in a tuff way
Avatar 2:57am Eiderdown:

Goodnight Jeff...great to be here with you all
Avatar 2:58am Jeff Conklin:

Thanks for listening, all. See you next week?
  2:59am wavy:

Definitely, Conklin. Definitely.
  2:03pm m:

is anyone having problems with the archive of the show? The songs I am hearing don't match up with playlist.
