Week 2, Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm listener james from westwood:

There are two shows on FMU that make me wish I lived in NYC: Fabio's, so I could see all the movies he talks about playing in the city, and yours, so I could catch these wonderful performances live. Hearing them here is the very next best thing!
Avatar 3:08pm northguineahills:

james, you just made run to the corner of my room and weep.

howdy and hi to ruth & david & all
Avatar 3:17pm ruth:

Hiya Steveo
Avatar 3:20pm northguineahills:

White African Power sounds like it would be an ode to Ian Smith.
Avatar 3:20pm ruth:

Another big thanks to Aaron H.. Good work Aaron thanks a million.
Avatar 3:22pm david w:

steveo welcome!
Avatar 3:23pm david w:

@NGH, I know, but you should see what this community is up to. Very cool people.
Avatar 3:25pm Ruth:

Yes it is a weird. But since the artists are Black Africans with Albinism it makes sense. They are horribly discriminated against and were often actually killed in rural areas
Avatar 3:26pm Ruth:

Awww Beatrice I'm getting all runny thanks so much! and For you the White African Power by Tanzania Albinism Collective. Enjoy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm listener james from westwood:

This is why I'm here: to hear folks play the shit out of a piano!
Avatar 3:28pm Ruth:

Applause for Kim W. Yahooo! keeping the Ridgewood Radio faith!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm listener james from westwood:

Or other instrument, if I misheard!
Avatar 3:30pm david w:

Diamanda G is the pianist and the subject of our third prize. Her CD All The Way.
Avatar 3:31pm Ruth:

Voraciously thanking our Lord and Master Doug S once again without you Mr. S it ain't even possible!! HUG!
Avatar 3:31pm northguineahills:

Pretty sure Min Xiao Fen is playing the pipa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm listener james from westwood:

That makes more sense. Galas doesn't do things halfway. Henry Rollins once overheard her running through vocal exercises, ages ago, and reported being awed by the intensity of just the warmup.
Avatar 3:35pm Ruth:

Richard R Thank you so much. We love you too. We'll be sending you Diamanda Galas "All the Way" the perfect thing to screech along to when ytou're having that kind of day..
  3:38pm julia down the street:

Greetings Ruth, Mia, and David. Thanks for the Diamonda magic ☼.☼
Avatar 3:38pm Ruth:

Up for next prize:
"La Terremoto": Anana Funk Hip 1970-75: Dolores Vargas: CD,
  3:48pm David W (2):

I tuned in thinking a dinner for two date with Terry Riley might be one of the prizes. But instead I find I am captivated by the music.
Avatar 3:49pm Ruth:

Kim W. You won a prize!! "La Terremoto": Anana Funk Hip 1970-75 by Dolores Vargas on CD is all yours
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Stepchild:

Hellos all. Wish I hadn't been late, but the upside is I increased my already outstanding emergency car tire changing skills. Yippee
Avatar 3:52pm Ruth:

Whoa Step that sounds impressive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Ridgewooders - I was out banking, but I hope you know how much I appreciate this show!

Avatar 3:56pm david w:

Henry, you are golden in our frequency
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Stepchild:

@Ruth I try to put on a good face. Haven't changed one in many many years. It is always a PITA
Avatar 3:58pm weinstein:

James F. What a lovely gesture
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm listener james from westwood:

For some reason they only allowed 10 shows for pre-Marathon pledge-spreading! Used to be more. Figured I'd make up for that.
Avatar 3:59pm david w:

Now on the prize board: Interventions: Horse Lords, CD, Northern Spy. $20 gets you in the running.
Avatar 4:03pm david w:

And the premium for Ridgewood Radio is the CD Noise By People for a $75 pledge with: Anna RG, Zeena Parkins, Charmaine Lee, Marcia Bassett & Samara Lubelski, Steffi Gudra, Heejin Jang, Bulgarian Voices Trio, Sarmen Almond, Roe Enney, Ha-Yang Kim, Min Xiao-Fen, Shelley Hirsch

Avatar 4:11pm david w:

coelacanth∅ thank you! We are discussing our preferred nickname!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Webhamster Henry:

Sounds like a Just 7th there on the guitar
Avatar 4:16pm Ruth:

Awarding Horse Lords "Interventions" on the oh so cool Northen Spy Label to James F. thanks for your most loyal eartime James
Avatar 4:16pm coelacanth∅:

i've been having a tough time getting pledges through to completion. my ancient laptop is more secure but it keeps crashing as soon as i hit "submit" (among other instances) i guess and i'm glad this one worked. i normally only use it for streaming music, wikipedia and the rare visit to youboob.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm listener james from westwood:

Yes!! But all WFMU and GTDR's listeners are beloved! Every one of us lifts a brick to build this wonderful institution!
Avatar 4:18pm coelacanth∅:

congratulations james!
Avatar 4:20pm coelacanth∅:

40 years?! (that's almost as much as me!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Webhamster Henry:

WBAI Free Music Store archives would be good! Citizen Kafka told me that the recordings of the last Free Music store series, in 1983, which he curated, were all taped over by other WBAI factions.
Avatar 4:21pm david w:

Prize now in play: Synergy: Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith & Suzanne Ciani, LP, Rvng. Intl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm listener james from westwood:

WH, that is seven different flavors of fucked up.
Avatar 4:23pm david w:

@Henry: I have also been the victim of finding WBAI tapes erased to save a few bucks (most memorable, Philip Glass and Burroughs opening statements at the Nova Festival in 1976). Oy.
Avatar 4:27pm coelacanth∅:

bai was a serious mess when i used to live in range and listen. a lot of internal harassment and hypocrisy. is it better now?
Avatar 4:29pm coelacanth∅:

(of course my information came second-hand; but it seemed plausible)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Stepchild:

tragic info there @WH & davidw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Stepchild:

intra-left infighting seemed perpetual at WBAI. I surrendered and haven't tuned there in aeons
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm listener james from westwood:

Fuckin' Christ. Why didn't they just have a fistfight if they had such beefs w/ each other? Flesh heals; tape doesn't!
Avatar 4:34pm david w:

To be fair, there are amazing people there to this day, fighting the good fight. But there are issues...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm listener james from westwood:

Yet think of how fortunate we are that WFMU archives virtually e v e r y t h i n g, and when they don't there's a very good reason that they disclose for not doing so. We are so damn lucky.
4:34pm Dave in Vermont on the phone:

Gorgeous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Stepchild:

2nded @Dave!
Avatar 4:36pm david w:

Yeah, solo on a synth with no MIDI or computers!
Avatar 4:36pm coelacanth∅:

well, that was tape. even the beatles got recorded over.
Avatar 4:38pm coelacanth∅:

(...id love to hear John Lennon's demo of "good night", for instance)
Avatar 4:39pm david w:

@Coel. I've become obsessed with George Martin and Beatles discovery of studio techniques.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Doug Schulkind:

Suzanne Ciani performed live on WFMU a few hours before I did my first-ever Give the Drummer Some show in my own time slot. It was Sunday evening, February 1, 1988. She was a guest on Richard Ginsburg's Synthetic Pleasure program. (If it wasn't that night, it was within a few weeks of it.)
Avatar 4:43pm Ruth:

So glad your machine did the job for us Richard M. THANKS!. In fact we'll be sending you a lovely gift Sunergy: Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith & Suzanne Ciani, a shiny round vinyl record a little bit of electronic music history
Avatar 4:45pm coelacanth∅:

WooHoo! i thought my chance of winning a prize had passed...AND you pronounced my moniker correctly!
Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Doug Schulkind:

David Dichelle is in town from Leipzig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm listener james from westwood:

The loops! He's got a divine one from Lou Reed from "Street Hassle" that is entrancing. And so are many others!
Avatar 4:47pm Ruth:

In Pittsburgh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Doug Schulkind:

No, Jersey City!
Avatar 4:48pm Ruth:

At the mothership.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Egg-sactly!
Avatar 4:52pm david w:

Last chance to direct your love and cash to Ridgewood Radio for this cycle! $75 gets you this special CD, Noise By People. Pledge and save the world!
Avatar 4:52pm coelacanth∅:

david @4.39 - it's pretty remarkable considering what they were up against. (the anti-progressive emi geezers) the Geoff Emerick book is interesting, if you haven't read it. (a little biased maybe, to the benefit of McCartney; but still good)
apparently they had 4 track machines gathering dust in closets (& 8-tracks?) awaiting "testing procedures"...while in the u.s. multitrack taping was in full gear. finally the beatles just took the machines out and used them - because they were The Beatles.
Avatar 4:53pm Ruth:

Time's running out to get the Ridgewood Radio CD "Noise by People" before it will fade into the NEVER to be available for love or money.
Avatar 4:55pm Ruth:

Fade into the Ether that is. C'mon $75 bucks gets you one
Avatar 4:55pm david w:

@coel... I could go deep with this, thanks for the tips. BTW, I have to thank Ruth for training me on proper pronunciation.
Avatar 4:56pm coelacanth∅:

as is my habit i try to spread my mouse mush evenly among not quite all the shows that i'd like to. i hope you don't mind; i'm still planning to get your premium!
Avatar 4:56pm northguineahills:

Thanks David and Ruth!
Avatar 4:57pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks David and Ruth!
