This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

hello explorers, let's roll
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm doctorjazz:

Hi Evan! Hi all you out there!
Avatar 7:01pm Flash Strap:

Hiya Doc!
  7:03pm ?:

Morning to you Evan & Doc. How long is a piece of string?
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we'll play another game of word association and chance-based song sequencing by taking our previous experiment (see here: wfmu.org... ) and vaguely recreating it by choosing songs with similar or same titles and putting them in the same order.
  7:04pm zonk ludlow:

That previous message was from yours truly. Think I'm still freaked after last week.
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

hello ?, great to see you. i think a string is usually either infinite, or 5 inches long
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

oh, hello zonk! how splendid that it's you!
Avatar 7:06pm northguineahills:

Been hearing a lot of Toussaint on WFMU lately, that's a good thing!
  7:07pm zonk ludlow:

Happy to go with infinite. Toussaint in the morning in Aus is a lovely thing.
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

indeed! in this case, it was pure chance. but he is so great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm doctorjazz:

I have been on the Stream, don't seem to be getting the show.
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

that's weird, doc... anyone else having that issue? i seem to be connected on my end
Avatar 7:09pm northguineahills:

I hear you loud and clear in the muggy South.
Avatar 7:09pm Flash Strap:

PS hello NGH!
Avatar 7:10pm hyde:

Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

this Intersystems record is so unusual. If I recall it's an early iteration of Syrinx
  7:11pm zonk ludlow:

No connection problems here. Hiya NGH & Hyde.
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde!
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

I hope you can join us Doc!
Avatar 7:12pm northguineahills:

where in Ozland are ya, zonk?

/sorry, I'm a geographer by trade
Avatar 7:12pm hyde:

gotta shower and get some dinner. will be back...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm doctorjazz:

One of those computer things, had to close the page, reopen the page, then I was able to get the Pop Up to work.
  7:13pm zonk ludlow:

@NGH. That would be Sydney.
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

splendid news Doc!
Avatar 7:15pm northguineahills:

ah, dulce, zonk, never been to the antipodean world, the furthest south I've been is Singapore. T'will make it one day!
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

why was this record made. thank goodness there was such a time where this made sense at all
  7:18pm zonk ludlow:

@NGH, Be happy to show around Sydney if you make it. Loving the Poitier, what a distinctive voice, perfectly logical.
Avatar 7:19pm northguineahills:

Sun Ra, the one point in the Venn Diagram that is intersected by all WFMU djs!
  7:19pm Dean:

According to Variety magazine, Jan. 31, 1968, he'd recorded it three years prior and it flopped. "But now that the Negro actor is a hot Hollywood property," WB saw an opportunity to make a buck on it. It was retitled, "Sidney Poitier Journeys inside the Mind."
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

Hi Dean! that's interesting, I'd never seen the re-release before now
Avatar 7:28pm northguineahills:

bed music is the boppin' Babbitt!
Avatar 7:33pm Little Danny:

Hiya Flash, all!
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

Hey there LD! are you on tonight?
Avatar 7:35pm Little Danny:

Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

ah, good to know. the email said you were getting filled-in-for again
  7:41pm JtotheK:

Axelrod! Away from comments but tuned in! Hi Flash, hi everyone.
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

Hi J2K! Great to have you with us. Axelrod is so cool
Avatar 7:43pm northguineahills:

Thought this had Axelrod's auralprints on it!
Avatar 7:44pm northguineahills:

The New Blockaders! (you're making me hard to leave work, and I'm just about done).
Avatar 7:46pm Little Danny:

Duuuuddde. I was listening to Axelrod just a few hours ago. Songs of Experience tho
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

Well, I really want you to leave work, and I really want you to stay here in the Room... what can an explorer do?
Avatar 7:48pm Flash Strap:

Doesn't surprise me, you're on record as a big Axelrod lover! I need to catch up with a lot of his stuff actually, but what I know I love
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

real tribute to Gato here
Avatar 7:50pm Little Danny:

I never tire of the two "Songs of" volumes. I'll try and wrangle some choice oddball Axelrod productions in an email for you
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

I know I have a lot, but I also know there's a lot left. I'd love to know your choice picks
Avatar 7:53pm hyde:

this show is quite good, when my wifi isnt spitting the bit :(
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

this track uses Scott's own invention, the Electronium: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

you can see it here, it's beautiful: www.preservationsound.com...
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

thanks Hyde, sorry about the wifi
Avatar 7:58pm northguineahills:

@Flash: Good bye bed (wouldn't have room for an electronium).
Avatar 7:59pm hyde:

@Flash just my life at present. livin rent free so i can't complain (though i do). if it's too much i'll bail and listen to the archive!
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey Flash Strap, thank for noticing my error on the GTDR email today. I am a bit overwound at the moment.
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doug! No problem. we gotta look out for each other
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: I know those internet blues brother
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm melinda:

This is fun.
Avatar 8:06pm northguineahills:

Thanks Flash, leaving work!
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

god's own speed to you NGH
  8:07pm JtotheK:

Re: Axelrod — there was a Wax Poetics interview (that took 2 issues!) which is a great read. I still need the “Seriously Deep” LP. I tend to pickup any 45 that has his name on as a production credit — and there are a lot!
  8:07pm still b/p:

Hm. Just in time for fart appreciation class.
Avatar 8:08pm Little Danny:

Henry Jacobs is the best
  8:09pm JtotheK:

Danny - I’m gonna have to be an archive listener for your show this week. But I am hoping schedule permits being in the chat room audience for the marathon shows.
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

HUGE agree on that, LD

Hi B/P, I hope you were taking notes now that the Mr. Teacher is here
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

this song is pretty adorable really
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

good album cover: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:18pm still b/p:

This Street Rap is magnamopious.
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

yeah this track slaps pretty hard
Avatar 8:20pm Little Danny:

@J2tK: You know I'm not one to let a listener go easily or graciously! Did you submit a permission slip and 3 forms of ID?!
Avatar 8:21pm Little Danny:

Oh man Patsy Cline I love you
Avatar 8:23pm still b/p:

That song was a right choice for Patsy but my associations are all Andy Andy Andy.
Avatar 8:23pm hyde:

show not coming in consistently here on my end. must leave it for later. thanks and good night all!
  8:24pm JtotheK:

@Danny - I’ll need to apply for a Diners Club card for that 3rd form of ID. Oh my!
Avatar 8:25pm Little Danny:

Avatar 8:27pm Little Danny:

Wow! That's crazy about Scott being at Motown!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm doctorjazz:

Fun show, thanks, gotta run now, time to leave the office.
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

@LD: hard to imagine what that was like, I wish it yielded more recordings

Safe travels Doc!
Avatar 8:36pm Flash Strap:

sorry to lose you Hyde. you're missed already
  8:44pm zonk ludlow:

Love Sun Ra oddness into Scientist, heavyweights.
Avatar 8:45pm Flash Strap:

yeah i was happy about that one
  8:46pm davefromtoronto:

great show, man!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm melinda:

Heat Haze was cool.
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

thank YOU dave!

@Melinda: yeah, that's a pretty hip track
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

this whole collection of tracks is really intriguing all the way through
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

Inventions For Radio: The Dreams, I mean
  8:58pm zonk ludlow:

@ Flash, Indeed!
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

The best Supremes LP, and the first
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

pretty ridiculous cover for Shangri-La here: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

really nice, subtle synth compositions though. has that moonlight Tomita sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm melinda:

That's a hilarious cover. I agree about the composition. Subtle spacey.
Avatar 9:08pm still b/p:

Is there a censored version, a la Country Life, so the robot looks like he’s just making heart-amped eyes at that gooood looking bird?
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

now THAT's a juicy visual implication i'd like to see
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm melinda:

I looked up Delia Derbyshire and saw that she did the music for The Legend of Hell House, which I sort of remember being scared by as a kid.
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

she did a lot of BBC and British productions I know, but I'm totally unfamiliar with her work on The Legend of Hell House. looks spooky
Avatar 9:14pm Little Danny:

Killer set Flash! Bat'ya is soooo deep
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

this Exodus is a Little Danny treasure
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

ha, thanks LD! this one from your bosom to our ears
Avatar 9:17pm Little Danny:

Feels so right on the Ex's Room
Avatar 9:17pm still b/p:

Any iPhone consultant in here...? Like tax help volunteer kind of thing? Still newbie-ish and power consumption seems heavy. Just over an hour of fmu app and show’s web page open , nothing else running, and used 26% . That be normal... ish? The monitoring and charging is a li’l crazy.
Avatar 9:19pm Flash Strap:

B/P: i am useless to you, sadly. I just dropped my flip phone in the toilet to prove it
Avatar 9:20pm Little Danny:

Still b/p! Do you have a bunch of other apps open at present? Double-click yer main round button and then swipe upwards for apps you don't need open.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Uncle Michael:

Good evening.
Avatar 9:24pm still b/p:

Don’t think so Danny. I check from time to time and don’t see anything open, sneaky , hungry.
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

Hi there Uncle!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Uncle Michael:

I like this 2.5 Suns record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Uncle Michael:

I'm just here briefly. I have to sleep early to rise and drive for a morning flight.
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

well, happy to have you for long or for short
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

this is one of the great records of all time i think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm melinda:

tink, tink, tink
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

ha, exactly!
Avatar 9:37pm still b/p:

Oh, I clicked it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Uncle Michael:

Mike Cooper is a GTDR listener and supporter, Evan. You probably are aware...
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

oh indeed
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

check this out: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Uncle Michael:

How very cool, Evan!
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

he's a wonderful fellow, to understate it
  9:49pm Dean:

More about "Poitier Meets Plato"... The record was nominated for a Grammy in '65, the original year of release. Photographer Ed Thrasher received the nomination for "Best Album Cover (Other Than Classical)."

In fact, it appears the record was issued in '64.
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

That's amazing: "Best Album Cover (Other Than Classical)."

hard to imagine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Uncle Michael:

I'm heading to bed. The next time I talk to you all, we'll be in Marathon.
  9:54pm zonk ludlow:

3 hours gone in a blink. Engrossing as always Flash. Until we next meet fellow explorers make it strange, just like Electric Lucifer.
Avatar 9:58pm Flash Strap:

sleep tight, Uncle

Thanks, Zonk. Strange till next we meet!
  9:58pm Dean:

A review from Sept. '64: "The result is one of the most hip readings of Plato probably ever delivered."
Avatar 9:58pm Flash Strap:

get in that next room via this portal: wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:59pm Flash Strap:

@Dean: hard to argue with that!
