A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Art is so subjective. This painting seems to fall more into the category of "illustration" (not a BAD word, by the way) than fine art, in my opinion but I will agree that it IS nicely done. I really want to see it "in person", I'm sure that would make a difference, it always does.

@weRalone: not amy sherald. kehinde wiley referenced a painting of judith chopping off the head of holofernes, from the bible, as he does ref to historical paintings in his art.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am BronwynB:

IA queems, i like obama's better, it seems like a better likeness and i love the background and colors of obama's, but i LOVE michelle's dress in the portrait, although maybe that just means i like the designer of the dress she was wearing when she sat for it

  9:53am queems:

@bronwyn agreed. michelle’s facial likeness seems off to me, but i also haven’t seen the painting in high resolution and apparently it is better that way. and her gown is fantastic

loving the tunes trouble. thanks for lovely morning
Avatar 9:58am Trouble:

art is frequently talking in metaphors, to try to engage conversation about what we perceive as "truth". To many people on guard for insults, art is the first place that they look to. Rudy Giuliani made being offended by art a defining moment when he tried to cancell funding for the brooklyn museum's showing of an english show that included art that he found repulsive. partners.nytimes.com...
  9:58am Kurt:

Passaic River Blues: It figures you would go around calling people ignorant and racist. Truly shows what you are all about.

  10:02am still b/p:

Both portraits are fine to me, with distinguishing strength, though the expectations of conventional treatment did need reset on first exposure. Because they’re degrees out of standard mode, each new encounter keeps reminding me to fully expect sneering derision of the paintings from political and personal and expectation-bound critics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am BronwynB:

trouble, im really amused by one sentence in that article: "Meanwhile, Chris Ofili, a Roman Catholic whose portrait of the Virgin Mary so offended the Mayor and whose work often features clumps of elephant dung..." He's really found his niche!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am melinda:

I forgot about the dung Mary.
  10:04am gauche knee:

I found Obama’s painting jarring initially & yes “non-presidential” but I’ve come to love it ...for just that! It’s confrontational , & simultaneously warm, rich, & humbling depiction of a US president.
  10:04am βrian:

It's a dung deal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am bore:

i really like her portrait overall, especially the colors, but her head tilt doesn't match her eye tilt...I wish that didn't bother me but it does...
Swag For Life Member 10:05am tadpoles:

The nice thing Trouble and Bronwyn is that Gulliani helped make Chris Ofili famous. Deservedly so too.
  10:05am carter:

criticism of the portraits being too political or offensive are thinly veiled insecurities about your own place in culture

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Adrian in London:

@TDK60 If it's Buñuel's birthday then let's raise an *extremely* dry Martini to him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Passaic River Blues:

Probably will regret replying to a troll, but Kurt, man, I was responding to a particular statement: "She also paints african american women cutting off the heads of white women. Really unites the audience." This statement is both a lie (Sherald has never used such imagery) and likely intended to misdirect discussion and inflame people. So it was at once stupid and malicious. You are free to draw your own, well-informed conclusions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Webhamster Henry:

I was at that protest for "Sensation" at the Brooklyn Museum - we used to live a few blocks away.
The real offense was not the elephant dung - or any of the other interesting unconventional pieces, but that it was Saatchi's collection, which kind of was promoting his taste and acquisitions.
Avatar 10:07am Trouble:

chris ofili was a substantial artist by the time guilliani had a kitten over his painting. not trying to understand the work at all, or what his use of dung is about, he just assumed insults were intended
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear bore, that's the first thing I noticed about her face also. Just... askew. I know it's not always the point when painting a portrait, but she is SUCH a beautiful, powerful woman and I just don't feel that from this work.
Avatar 10:09am βrian:

I love that she's asserting her right to bare arms.
  10:10am Kurt:

Passaic River Blues: The polite thing to do is point out the error. What you did was insult the person who made the error and inflame things further.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am bore:

@itzall, it is one of those funny things that goes back and forth in my head. if I stare long enough then it stats looking OK again, but then if I look away and look back it looks strange. i can't decide, but it definitely draws my attention. maybe that is the point...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am steveo:

Simone is so great. I'm amused at the idea that music is necessarily less "political" than visual art.

Swag For Life Member 10:28am Walt:

@Itzall and @Bore - the eyes of the Sherald portrait remind me of a number of John Singer Sargent portraits that have (purposely IMO) mismatched eyes. Here is one, "The Lady Agnew": www.nationalgalleries.org... ... which also features a left arm that's way too long and perspective/geometry of the left and right sides of the chair don't match. I think Sherald's rendering of the eyes is absolutely a calculated effect.

Dear Walt, I agree that it was 100% intentional, just not sure I'm a fan. Like I've heard before from free form jazz critics (my wife, mainly) "Can't they just play the right notes?!?" Amy Sherald is certainly a talented artist and definitely aware of what she's doing here. Like I said earlier, I really want to see it in situ.

Speaking of Netflix, the German series, Babylon Berlin shows the artsy sexually transgressive nitelife of the Weimer Republic (it takes place 1929-1931, so far). i was just thinking about Nina Simone before i turned the computer on, thinking i should've by now encountered an old friend on these comment boards. she didn't listen to wfmu when we hung out 20 years ago, but made me many mix tapes, turned me on to Jeff Buckley (weirdly, since i used to listen to Nick Hill's show pretty regularly; but that one slipped by); Diamanda Galas; Peter Rowan; Dan Bern...and thinking she probably thought she was turning me on to Nina, but didn't by many years. but she did turn me on to my favorite song by Ms. Simone: cotton-eyed joe. @coel that's funny about Cotton-Eyed Joe. There's a dance to go with it that I think everyone In Texas has to learn at some point.
  11:09am BEAVO:

Another Randy Newman cover great version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am steveo:

the new york yankees have been playing cotton-eyed joe after take me out to the ballgame for years
Avatar 11:11am northguineahills:

Nice skylarking dub,,,,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am steveo:

(some dance version from the 90s or something)
Swag For Life Member 11:11am tadpoles:

Always loved the expression "skylarking"! We need more skylarking.
Avatar 11:12am TDK60:

I must leave this building now. Promise to listen to the rest of the show when archived.
Avatar 11:13am coelacanth∅:

haha that makes sense melinda! i found out when my niece was taking piano lessons a few years ago and i said "you should learn cotton-eyed joe" she immediately started cracking up and went into this ridiculous dance and started singing it as a goofy -almost traditional irish-sounding song! i had no idea!
  11:14am queems:

the 90s version is by rednex
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am BronwynB:

the cotton eyed joe dance version was extremely popular when i was a kid. we used to do the dance at summer camp and shit
Avatar 11:14am Trouble:

@tdk60 take your parapluie! that is if you are in nyc metro area
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am melinda:

It's the only line dance I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Passaic River Blues:

@Queems: yes! Rednex, part of the '90s Swedish techno pop wave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am ⓔⓚⓔⓔ:

@BronwynB@11:00 BWAHAHAHA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Ken From Hyde Park:

@queems - Yes, the one that Beavis & Butt-head aired.
  11:21am queems:

a couple years ago my boyfriend and i were watching the worst fred astaire movie of all time (daddy longlegs) and there was a scene that reminded us of 90s cotton eyed joe so we got sucked into a cotton eyed joe hole for a week or so. and now i know about rednex
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am steveo:

oh they are swedish, that's sort of amazing
Avatar 11:22am Wild Neil:

Peace all. My sister claims the term redneck implies racist white person. Thoughts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear queems, is that as bad as those K-Holes I've heard about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Hughie Considine:

Redneck refers to certain rural Southerners and more broadly to a set of attitudes that are racist.
Avatar 11:24am coelacanth∅:

(i'm very happy i learned about that song via Nina Simone. i still think it bizarre that those lyrics would be put to a silly,fast-tempo song.)
  11:25am queems:

@itzall i’d say they are both along the same lines
  11:27am Kurt:

I'm a redneck. I neither live in the south or am a racist.
Avatar 11:27am coelacanth∅:

i don't assume a redneck is racist. many are but i don't think any more than the general population and probably not as much as wealthy city and suburban folk. it's just that rednecks may tend to be more honest and up-front about it.
Avatar 11:27am βrian:

I wouldn't say Southerners. There are plenty of rednecks in Wisconsin, for example. One def:
"a working-class white person, especially a politically reactionary one from a rural area"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Mick:

@coelcanth I wish I had learned that song via Nina Simone! I think i first heard it in a folk song class, but like a lot of people here, the rednex version is now burned into my brain.
  11:28am Kurt:

I am neither reactionary or working class.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Adrian in London:

Oh this Yearning EP is lovely. Have you got the 10-inch, Trouble? I know you're fond of that format.
Avatar 11:29am coelacanth∅:

Mick maybe in time and abstinence you can purge it and start over! it's really a beautiful song, as i know it.
Avatar 11:30am βrian:

And I grew up amongst many working class white people. Most weren't rednecks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Itzall Ablurr:

Of course it referred, initially, to people who had to, you know, actually WORK for a living. Like, chopping tobacco all day working, where the sun might give one a RED neck.
Avatar 11:32am Trouble:

ooooo i need to look for that @adrian! merci
  11:32am Peter in Sea/Bklyn:

Good Morning, checkin in from the County of KINGS!
Avatar 11:32am coelacanth∅:

i've talked with people who refer to themselves as rednecks who said they consider it being resourceful (which makes sense) having somewhat more ingenuity than spoiled people (which also makes sense) and living simply, enjoying nature and the beauty and peace that a simple life has to offer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Adrian in London:

@Trouble VERY limited edition
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Adrian in London:

@Trouble And they're playing a gig in their local village hall in the middle of nowhere in Oxfordshire soon.
Avatar 11:35am northguineahills:

man, I miss the NY county of Kings....
Avatar 11:35am βrian:

I would say it implies anti-intellectualism and a suspicion of wide-ranging learning.
Avatar 11:35am coelacanth∅:

(and i've known "typical rednecks" who shared a house, or an apartment with people who were not "white")

  11:38am stue:

yes ralph waldo emerson was in fact a self-proclaimed redneck

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Adrian in London:

@Tadpoles Avatar? That's my passport photo! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Itzall Ablurr:

βrian, that very neatly sums it up, I'd say.
Avatar 11:39am coelacanth∅:

βrian i'm suspicious of the validity of that implication; although i would think that as a "typical" redneck experiences more, becomes more "worldly", heshe would naturally become less "redneck-like".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am steveo:

Les porc-oiseaux ne disent pas moo.
Swag For Life Member 11:40am tadpoles:

Oi! Adrian....lucky Gulianni is no longer mayor...he wouldn't let you in to New York!

There are redneck hippies and liberal rednecks in my neck of the woods, not common, but they exist.

Swag For Life Member 11:43am tadpoles:

Nice to hear thanks Adrian, I didn't know...wish he would perform sometime. Cheers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Itzall Ablurr:

ceeley, you may be overlooking the fact that to a "real" redneck, experiencing anything beyond their comfort zone or knowledge level would most likely be shrugged off as "that wierdo shit" or somesuch and immediately discounted and forgotten in a blur of Pabst and fried pig ears.
Avatar 11:43am coelacanth∅:

right, ngh. i probably know more of them because i live in an area with a lot of woody, rural areas around it, but also "progressive" colleges nearby.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Mick:

Coelcanth: I'll work on it! re. rednecks, I agree it doesn't necessarily mean racist; but rural - or at least working/spending a bunch of time outdoors - seems to be part of the deal. I'm from the north, and lots of the people I grew up with would self-identify as rednecks. As with many words, context is key.
Avatar 11:44am βrian:

Brigid's voice reminds me a bit of Annie Haslam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Itzall Ablurr:

This Brigid Mae Power is ethereal, love it.
Avatar 11:46am βrian:

Wait, I thought Brooklyn hipsters had appropriated the Pabst brand.
Avatar 11:46am βrian:

Schlitz, maybe? Blatz?
Avatar 11:46am coelacanth∅:

I. Ablurr, i'm not though. that reaction should be expected from most of the entire population -just expressed in different ways.
  11:47am SeanG:

  11:47am rw:

Trouble! Thanks for the music today! I missed your take on the Michelle Obama portrait in the midst of getting my son to school but it seems we may be on the same page. Personally I find it way more compelling than the Wiley painting (though I understand there's probably a good degree of compensation and compromise going into a painting like that).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Webhamster Henry:

This show had more Ninas the a Hirschfeld drawing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Itzall Ablurr:

Ceeley, that's true; but most, um, "normal" people would be less likely to express their disregard or anger by hurling hot welding rods & bolts at that which annoys them. For instance. It may come down to a certain lack of subtlety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Passaic River Blues:

@WH: Nice!
Avatar 11:51am coelacanth∅:

haha Itzall, well as i said, they live simply!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am melinda:

To me the term redneck suggests rural connection, and many non-rural types mistakenly think that being rural is inextricably linked with ignorance (and racism).
  11:53am Kurt:

Love to see all the efforts here to play identity politics. I'm glad it's been decided what a redneck is and the behavior of such folk. Make me wonder who the real racists are. Just saying...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Itzall Ablurr:

And it seems that PBR as the barley-pop of choice has lost ground over the last few years to Miller High Life® (at least here in Atlanta).
  11:54am Dean:

OED: orig. N. Amer. (usually derogatory). Originally: a poorly educated white person working as an agricultural labourer or from a rural area in the southern United States, typically considered as holding bigoted or reactionary attitudes. Now also more generally: any unsophisticated or poorly educated person, esp. one holding bigoted or reactionary attitudes.

Thanks, Trouble. Very nice show today. The homework for next week: Definitions and opinions on "hayseeds."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Passaic River Blues:

@Kurt: you've already stated that you are a redneck but are not Southern, racist, reactionary, working class. Apart from being white presumably, how are you a redneck? How do you define what is often a pejorative term?
Avatar 11:57am Trouble:

  11:57am Dean:

@rw, Tell that to my kids.

Thanks Trouble!

Rednecks got their name from popular lore from being out in the fields and having sunburned necks.

Wow one of my favorite songs. Didn’t know ms simone recorded it. Thanks trouble, much thanks.
Avatar 11:58am coelacanth∅:

melinda, true.
...i'm sure not an authority - but i grew up in white suburbia; have lived in the mountains of rural north carolina; have lived in cities; have lived in a "rural" college town surrounded by "redneck country".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Mick:
