Art is so subjective. This painting seems to fall more into the category of "illustration" (not a BAD word, by the way) than fine art, in my opinion but I will agree that it IS nicely done. I really want to see it "in person", I'm sure that would make a difference, it always does.

art is frequently talking in metaphors, to try to engage conversation about what we perceive as "truth". To many people on guard for insults, art is the first place that they look to. Rudy Giuliani made being offended by art a defining moment when he tried to cancell funding for the brooklyn museum's showing of an english show that included art that he found repulsive. partners.nytimes.com...

Both portraits are fine to me, with distinguishing strength, though the expectations of conventional treatment did need reset on first exposure. Probably will regret replying to a troll, but Kurt, man, I was responding to a particular statement: "She also paints african american women cutting off the heads of white women. Really unites the audience." This statement is both a lie (Sherald has never used such imagery) and likely intended to misdirect discussion and inflame people. So it was at once stupid and malicious. You are free to draw your own, well-informed conclusions.

Webhamster Henry:

I was at that protest for "Sensation" at the Brooklyn Museum - we used to live a few blocks away.
The real offense was not the elephant dung - or any of the other interesting unconventional pieces, but that it was Saatchi's collection, which kind of was promoting his taste and acquisitions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am

chris ofili was a substantial artist by the time guilliani had a kitten over his painting. not trying to understand the work at all, or what his use of dung is about, he just assumed insults were intended

@Itzall and @Bore - the eyes of the Sherald portrait remind me of a number of John Singer Sargent portraits that have (purposely IMO) mismatched eyes. Here is one, "The Lady Agnew": www.nationalgalleries.org... ... which also features a left arm that's way too long and perspective/geometry of the left and right sides of the chair don't match. I think Sherald's rendering of the eyes is absolutely a calculated effect.

i was just thinking about Nina Simone before i turned the computer on, thinking i should've by now encountered an old friend on these comment boards. she didn't listen to wfmu when we hung out 20 years ago, but made me many mix tapes, turned me on to Jeff Buckley (weirdly, since i used to listen to Nick Hill's show pretty regularly; but that one slipped by); Diamanda Galas; Peter Rowan; Dan Bern...and thinking she probably thought she was turning me on to Nina, but didn't by many years. but she did turn me on to my favorite song by Ms. Simone: cotton-eyed joe. (which i didn't find out for years was usually a goofy old folk song)
i miss her.

I wouldn't say Southerners. There are plenty of rednecks in Wisconsin, for example. One def:
"a working-class white person, especially a politically reactionary one from a rural area"

Coelcanth: I'll work on it! re. rednecks, I agree it doesn't necessarily mean racist; but rural - or at least working/spending a bunch of time outdoors - seems to be part of the deal.
