Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Howdy Danny. Know it hasn't quite ticked over in your part of the world yet, but an advance welcome to the Year of the Dog all.
Avatar 10:04pm Flash Strap:

never really waded through all these Zodiac records of his but everything he does is so good

Hi LD, Blue Flamers
  10:05pm zonk ludlow:

Good to be in your company again Flash, its like you never went away.
Avatar 10:06pm Little Danny:

Hello hello hello and hello! Delighted to see all of you again!
Avatar 10:07pm Little Danny:

Oh, Flash, Zodiac Cosmic Sounds is a singular LP and is essential
Avatar 10:13pm Flash Strap:

oh right, that's the first one he did, before he did that overwhelming series later on... man, you're right, i need to dig in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm melinda:

I like psychsploitation.
  10:18pm MrFab:

Hey al!
I haven't found the individual Garson albums for each zodiac sign to be as cool as "Cosmic Sounds." Not nearly as produced, more like just spoken word+synth doodles. But I only have a few of 'em, not all 12...
  10:18pm Dean:

You're broadcasting from where? I forget.
Avatar 10:19pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Danny; bleuets
...i'm knackered; and filthy. i need sleep and a shower, but i also need this.
Avatar 10:22pm Little Danny:

Coel! MrF! Dean! Come on in!
@coel: Ima try and hold you as long as possible
@Dean: Marfa, a small town in the west Texas desert
@MrF: I figured of anyone who might own the full zodiac series it would be you
Avatar 10:22pm Little Danny:

You and me both, Melinda. Been on a major psychsploitation kick recently myself!
  10:23pm Dean:

Right! Occasional Ren Weschler territory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm melinda:

What are some other examples of psychsploitation? I don't know much but I like what I heard here.
  10:26pm MrFab:

Heh, article on Marfa in a recent "Men's Journal" (dr office waiting room). One photo caption: "Another hipster posing in front of old food truck." That you, Danny?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm melinda:

Nice thread in this set.
Avatar 10:27pm Little Danny:

Haha, no MrF, but said food truck is caddy-corner from our house!
Avatar 10:28pm northguineahills:

I was just listening to this recording last month (i found online).
Avatar 10:29pm hyde:

@Little Danny this is killer.
Avatar 10:29pm geezerette:

Love this. Hey, Danny and all!
  10:30pm zonk ludlow:

My fave Velvets live recording.
Avatar 10:30pm hyde:

yay, geezerette!
Avatar 10:31pm Little Danny:

Thanks Melinda! Psychsploitation is pretty diffuse but I I think of a lot of AIP biker/freakout soundtracks from the late '60s, and a bunch of budget-label cash-in records. I'll see if I can find a link to some titles somewhere...
Avatar 10:31pm geezerette:

Yay, Hyde! How you doin'?
Avatar 10:31pm hyde:

still breathing
Avatar 10:31pm Little Danny:

Thanks all! And geez and NGH! There y'all are
Avatar 10:33pm geezerette:

me too,Hyde. Better than not!
  10:33pm MrFab:

melinda, my fave is Richard Hayman's "Great Electric Latin Love Machine." Gotta version of "Going Outta My Head" that really will do that to ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm melinda:

Thanks for the recommendation Fab.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm melinda:

For years I assumed Neil was just a big cheeseball but thanks to FMU I've discovered that I really like him.
Avatar 10:36pm hyde:

i was laughing too hard to comment on the velvet underground to neil diamond segue
Avatar 10:36pm geezerette:

Howsy, Melinda, MrFab.

Also love Psychedelia, heavy or fat free.
  10:37pm Dean:

Stats are remarkable. Marfa's population is under 2k. Compare Winters in CA, near Sacramento, at over 6.5k. Winters occupies ~3 sq. mi.; Marfa just over 1.5. I feel like I could see all of Winters in a day. Marfa, an afternoon? (By "see" I mean "see," not "fully take in." But still.)
Avatar 10:38pm Little Danny:

Me too Melinda. I mean, he IS pretty cheesy but he definitely has some great moments. I heard "Someday Baby" first on FMU too.
Avatar 10:38pm geezerette:

Howdy...& I'm a native speaker?!
  10:38pm Dean:

Winters has a hotel not unlike this one in Marfa on its main street (Main St.). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marfa,_Texas#/media/File:USA_Marfa_pano_TX.jpg

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm melinda:

hi geeze! I just saw your typo and I really like it.
Avatar 10:41pm hyde:

this show is amazing
Avatar 10:42pm Little Danny:

Ahhh, thanks hyde
Avatar 10:43pm geezerette:

Wanted to visit Marfa when Judd was only attraction,... & Turrell's crater STILL not ready in AZ.
  10:46pm Dean:

I like small towns...or at least some idealized notion of them. I remember visiting Chelmsford, MA, in '81. At 30k+, it's not exactly a small town, but I remember locating its center at the Adams Library. Public libraries often speak volumes (pun...intended) about the towns they occupy.
Avatar 10:46pm northguineahills:

Off to a noise/DIY/wtf hiphop show, danks LD!
Avatar 10:46pm geezerette:

Melinda, ha, sounds like a cowboy after whiskeys.
Avatar 10:47pm geezerette:

What Hyde said.
  10:48pm still b/p:

Passed thru Marfa on at least two early 80s trips to Big Bend. No real visual recollection. Who knew what attention its rep would reap later?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm melinda:

A few years ago I told my mom that Marfa had become hip, and she started laughing. And kept laughing. Having grown up in the region in the 40s it just seemed bizarre.
Avatar 10:53pm Kris Holmes:

love that Carnations 45
Avatar 10:54pm geezerette:

Still B/P: Not a Judd fan but thought in context opinion might change. Really love Ad Reinhardt though, and light & space guys.

Melinda, great story!
  10:57pm Doctorjazz:

Hi Danny and flamers!
  10:58pm Dean:

One of my kids just reported to me that he thinks we have a cricket in the house. Heh.

I enjoy Judd and Reinhardt, but mostly, when it comes to extreme abstraction, Malevich.
Avatar 10:58pm geezerette:

Hiya, Doc J!
Avatar 10:59pm Little Danny:

Kris Holmes! well well well
Avatar 10:59pm Little Danny:

Hiya Doc!
  11:01pm Doctorjazz:

Hi Geez! Great sounds here, not sure how long I'll manage to listen, really beat. Great wind down, though!
Avatar 11:02pm geezerette:

Malevich was great! Man, I love good painting.

Dean, my sound engineer husband thought we had crickets too. Was extremely relieved they were fx!
Avatar 11:04pm Kris Holmes:

lol Dan, i'm listening most weeks, just not commenting that much.
Avatar 11:06pm hyde:

must sleep. night all!
Avatar 11:06pm Little Danny:

Haha, cricket false alarm!
Avatar 11:07pm Kris Holmes:

i actually had a cricket right outside the front door earlier this evening
Avatar 11:08pm geezerette:

Guess it's cricket season.

Night, Hyde!
  11:11pm melinda:

Bedtime for me too, nite!
  11:12pm zonk ludlow:

Cricket season just about complete down here and we managed to beat the English.
Avatar 11:13pm geezerette:

Night, Melinda!
Avatar 11:13pm hyde:

possibly i'm still here because i can't go to sleep because this show is so damn good
Avatar 11:15pm geezerette:

Hyde, it is. :c)
Avatar 11:16pm geezerette:

Beautiful set. :D
Avatar 11:19pm Little Danny:

hyde: GOOD! (And thanks.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm JtotheK:

gonna have to catch the rest via archives. good night everyone!
Avatar 11:20pm Little Danny:

Thanks geez!
  11:21pm zonk ludlow:

@ geezerette, Spotted, thought that may been a bit vague. If I had a prize it would be yours.
Avatar 11:21pm Kris Holmes:

this village callers track is so great
Avatar 11:22pm geezerette:

aw, shucks... :)
Avatar 11:23pm Little Danny:

I know, Kris! No one talks about it tho
Avatar 11:25pm Kris Holmes:

loving this Casuals one too
  11:28pm Dean:

Toledo has a famous glass museum, so yeah, probably.
  11:28pm Dean:

East L.A., my 'hood (if you'll tolerate a smidgen of bullshit).
Avatar 11:34pm Kris Holmes:

yep, he's playing a lap steel (double neck) held like a regular guitar lol
Avatar 11:35pm Little Danny:

Thanks mate. I knew you would know
Avatar 11:36pm Little Danny:

I would very much like to visit a glass museum. There's also one in Corning, NY that made an impression on me as tot
Avatar 11:38pm Little Danny:

NZ represent
  11:39pm Dean:

Jokes aplenty. Imagine walking into a glass museum...
  11:43pm zonk ludlow:

Always enjoy your musical journeys to my hemisphere LD.
Avatar 11:44pm Little Danny:

@zonk: I need to visit that hemisphere far more often
  11:46pm zonk ludlow:

NZ punches way above its weight in many ways. Loved Carsick Cars also, great name.
  11:46pm MrFab:

Ladies and gentlemen, on drums for Chamaeleon CHurch, one of the biggest a-holes in showbiz, Mr Chevy Chase!
Avatar 11:47pm Little Danny:

It beggars belief MrF but yes indeed
  11:49pm zonk ludlow:

Sweet Jesus MrFab!
  11:49pm MrFab:

Was a surprise finding a CCHurch album in a thrift, flipping it over, and there's Chase's mug looking out the back cover. had to buy it , of course.
  11:54pm still b/p:

Someone shoulda said to ya like my mom did to me when I brought a Jimi LP home, “You think you should be supporting that?”
  11:54pm zonk ludlow:

Two hours of bliss has passed way too quick, thanks LD. Travel safely all flamers see ya next week.
Avatar 11:55pm Little Danny:

@MrF: It really is unambiguously Chevy's mug, too. No squinting needed
  11:57pm still b/p:

Thanks for the show of many pleasures.
Avatar 11:58pm coelacanth∅:

well i did slip off into a hot shower that felt too good to be true but caught most of the rather excellent programme.
Thanx Danny!
Avatar 12:03am Little Danny:

Thanks & luv y'all! See ya around
