A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@BronwynB I agree - there's is a big gap of classical music (and show tunes) in WFMU's music programming.

@WHenry: I need to start playing show tunes on my show since as a teen they were 75% of what I listened to and I truly love them and want to showcase some of the weirder ones out there but im a bit nervous that people would hate it

  10:02am JakeGould:

Anyone have any neighborhood stray cats they have a soft sport for?

I have like a dozen or more near where I live. But there is one tiny tiger cat that brings a small tear to my eye: He/she’s neck is constantly askew to the right. I guess it busted it’s neck as a kitten? Seems healthy otherwise, but seeing that tiny face at an angle look at me makes me feel so many feels.
Avatar 10:02am Itzall Ablurr:

Very nice groove. Good to work these incredibly complex post paths to this morning.
  10:03am queems:

@jake i have a soft spot for all of the neighborhood cats but they don’t have a soft spot for me
  10:05am JakeGould:

The first time I saw that askew head kitten it was very cold ridden. Like a face full of crusted snot. Near a school so kids and parents were even worried about it. But it survived the cold spell—I assume someone took it inside—so happy it’s still around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am MD:

The paintings of Barak and Michelle are really cool...Love Em!

We used to have a time-share kitty who would come to hang out from a few doors down. A big brute of a love-sponge he was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Trouble:

a little blackk cat i thought was a dude cat is now most likely pregnant. so prince spooky is now queen spooky, and i need to figure out how to get her captured and neutered and find those future kittens homes.
  10:08am queems:

i have about 3 who come hang out on my porch to yell at each other. it drives my inside cat NUTS
  10:09am JakeGould:

@Trouble: Best of luck! And if Queen Spooky trusts you, expect her to share her kittens with you.
Avatar 10:10am Linda Lee:

@Trouble ~ we're lucky enough to have a few active TNR groups here in ulster/sullivan county. i'd guess you do too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am melinda:

When I was in college there was a neighborhood cat who would come around and we let him in the apartment for visits even though we weren't supposed to have cats. He was a big soft black kitty. I would welcome a vistor cat now since I'm currently catless but there aren't any.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am melinda:

Has anyone seen Kedi, the documentary about Turkish street cats? It's really good.
Avatar 10:11am Linda Lee:

melinda ~ try leaving some kibble out by your door for a while, along with water. if they're around, they'll find it. viola!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Webhamster Henry:

@BronwynB There used to be a show on WKCR that played only Theatrical and "commercial" music, from past shows that everyone forgot, cabaret songs (like Irene played on Tuesday), highlighting and interviewing performers who weren't even dead, and playing board and audition rarities. "Musical Theater Today". It stopped broadcasting about 20 years ago, and its enthusiastic and obsessive host Ezio Petersen died in 2016.
  10:12am queems:

@melinda i wanted to see that! i wasn’t sure if it would make me sad or not
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am The Oscar:

My neighborhood is full of cats, and my girlfriend and I have names for all of them. The best one is called AwesomeCat. He'll jump out in front of you and roll over for pets, and if you walk past he'll run ahead of you and do it again. Also, seconded on Kedi-- really wonderful film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, gang!
Avatar 10:13am βrian:

@melinda: That was our situation, too. We kept treats and catnip on hand. We vaguely felt as if we were contributing to the delinquency of a cat.
Avatar 10:13am Sem:

The village I walk to most mornings has a couple of cats who have the run of the place, that everyone pets and feeds, but as far as we know, are formally "staff-less."
Old joke: dogs have owners, cats have...
  10:13am JakeGould:

@melinda: Saw trailers. Seems good. The neighborhood I live in is very Middle Eastern so the attitude towards cats is decidedly non-Western: The cats basically come and go at will in shops. Sometimes at night the cats just become street cats until the morning and they go back into the store. They’re less pets and property and more “The cat that likes my store so I deal with them.”
Avatar 10:13am Linda Lee:

Kedi = Turkish for 'kitty' & the name of one of mine. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am The Oscar:

@queems There's one kinda sad part, but it's pretty quick. It's mostly just really warm and happy.
  10:14am JakeGould:

Also, big ups to black cats with tiny tufts in front.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am melinda:

Great idea, Linda! My neighbor's cat spends some time outdoors but I would feel weird bringing him into my house.@Brian I know what you mean.
Avatar 10:15am βrian:

@JG: Do you mean the white bib?
  10:16am queems:

@the oscar thanks for the warning! sad cats have always been my #1 downer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am steveo:

We recently saw some sweet cats living in a manger in Red Hook, Brooklyn. photos.app.goo.gl...
Avatar 10:16am Linda Lee:

@melinda, i'm guessing he'll make it in if he really wants to.
@JakeGould ~ presonally i find that very sensible. this 'pet' thing is getting out of hand. a billion dollar a year industry .. pet medical insurance .. psych meds for kitty..
  10:17am JakeGould:

@Brian: Nope, just a tiny tuft. Not a big patch like a tuxedo cat. Sometimes you can see it. Sometimes you can’t. When they get bigger you generally can see it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am melinda:

Agree that Kedi is mostly warm and happy, since Turkey has a culture of cat appreciation. I did wonder about cultural attitudes about spaying and neutering, which wasn't addressed in the film.
Avatar 10:18am βrian:

All of these cats are going to start chattering when the bird track plays ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am melinda:

White tufts are adorable. So are bibs and socks.
Avatar 10:18am Linda Lee:

if people are utilizing cats as rodent prevention & they're all provided for, i can see where spaying/neutering won't have the same importance.it's all about culture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am BronwynB:

@WHenry: that sounds wonderful. as a teen i used to listen to the broadway channel on sirius xm which plays the same shit all the time and way too many shitty rock musicals (rock musicals are fine in theory but barely anyone seems to understand how to execute them well). i really should start playing more show tunes on my show because there's a real need imo for thoughtful and wide-ranging musical theatre radio programming, especially in this area.
  10:20am queems:

“don’t be such a stupid man” is my new catch phrase
Avatar 10:20am βrian:

I used to have a black long-haired polydactyl kitty (24 toes). She could walk on snow.
  10:21am JakeGould:

FWIW, the fine if the Department of Health finds “evidence of vermin” in a shop is the exact same fine as if they find a cat in your shop in NYC. Last I knew, it was like a $350 fine. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
Avatar 10:21am Linda Lee:

wow!! 24 toes!! champion polydactyl! mine only has 22 :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am melinda:

@Linda I saw a video about a woman in Istanbul who was spaying/neutering neighborhood cats because she saw the kitten population as too much, but she was an expat from somewhere else. There is probably a variety of attitudes among people there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am steveo:

huge theater community here, of course, so I think you can find that audience. i'd be into it even though I'm just a regular person/stupid man.

Swag For Life Member 10:23am Andrea:

thank you yellow toast
Avatar 10:23am Linda Lee:

@melinda ~ the fact that she was ex-pat sort of confirms my idea that it's about culture.
Avatar 10:23am Linda Lee:

gosh haven't heard frank chickens in aeons! an old fave band!
  10:24am JakeGould:

@LindaLee: Nah, it’s more like DoH inspections are a source of revenue or a method of bullying stores out of the neighborhood. I’ve seen more than a few businesses that were in the community for decades, no complaints and then suddenly… BOOM! Closed due to violations and then guess what happens? You find out the building was—or will be—sold.
Avatar 10:25am Linda Lee:

@JakeGould ~ shit.
Avatar 10:27am Linda Lee:

here comes yet another monochromatic non-neighborhood of empty high-rise investment.
  10:27am JakeGould:

Shouldn’t be shocking in NYC anymore. It’s easy to understand: The system is so burdened with complaints that nothing happens unless something is pushed to the head of the list. Have power in the community and want something gone? Just use your political pull to push a complaint to be acted on immediately and put someone out of business. It happens far more often than you can imagine.
  10:27am queems:

the bodega cat at my local deli when i lived in astoria used to have his own little cat house inside
Avatar 10:27am Linda Lee:

not shocking at all. just so unrelenting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am dgg:

  10:31am JakeGould:

@dgg: That thing is right next to the Manhattan Bridge and is such an aberration to the skyline!
Avatar 10:33am Linda Lee:

the funny (strange) part is, this is strictly investment. no one will live in these buildings. so eventually you have a ghost town vibe with nothing happening. then the world abandons the dollar .. out goes the investment. not only is this monumental greed fatally inhuman, it's myopic!
  10:34am queems:

i look west out of my office window, and i can see long island city. 8 years ago when i started, you could see 1 world trade and the citi bank building and that was it. now there are like 5 or 6 other ugly condo buildings overwhelming the skyline. it is crazy
Avatar 10:34am northguineahills:

Coming back to visit NYC Memorial Day weekend, scared of what I'll find of my old haunts/hoods....
Avatar 10:35am Linda Lee:

the only viable long term investment is in actual community. not this leggo bullshit.

Our cat PLW was a street cat who went in and out a lot. He'd come when you called for him! He got in a fight with some critter a year ago so we keep him indoors now.
I like store cats - but some people are allergic. There was a massive white cat called Fluffy at a pet store in Park Slope 20 years ago who was quite a fixture!
Avatar 10:41am Linda Lee:

well sure. creative people have to create. i do get the idea that it's not create first, make-a-living second or third, as it was at one time. so you have an impact on the creative world.

  10:49am JakeGould:

I hate this year’s Westminster Dog Show winner. Poofy nothing.
Avatar 10:50am Itzall Ablurr:

No, it's a little more specific than DOG. There are many breeds; fluffy, muttly, rotund, sissy, lap-squirrel, mauler, shakey & mastodon to name but a few.
Avatar 10:50am Jeff Moore:

But Kim pointed out one upside to this year's choice: the winning Westminster breed often gets bought a lot in the following year, and those silly little puffballs will make way lower-maintenance pets for naive people who buy a dog without proper research than a border collie or even a giant schnauzer.
  10:51am emily:

I've never tried to get my new fuzzball to fetch. She's a spazz so I don't think she could focus long enough to do it, even if she knew how!
Avatar 10:56am Itzall Ablurr:

She's beautiful, eik.
Avatar 10:59am northguineahills:

@Ike: my cat did automatically, a friend tried to throw a bottle cap from across the room into the trash from the couch, and the little kitten ran after it, and brought it back. After that, it was his favorite game (and playing 'hockey' w/ said bottle caps)

@Linda, good for you! I hear that superstitious people still refuse to adopt black cats, so others like you fortunately step up to fill that gap. I meant to do that too this time, but this one stole my heart first. She's mostly black, though!

Lozenge is a good word. I'd use it as my mantra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Trouble:

Avatar 11:06am Linda Lee:

@eik ~ believe it or not it was never intentional. they just appear. ;-) agree though, it's good to make an effort to adopt the black cats if you have the choice. i think they're lovely.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am \ⓔⓘⓚ/:

I love Elif Batuman! Also, I just read "The Nightmare Stacks" by Charles Stross. It's the best book I've ever read about a romantically-inexperienced 24-year-old investment banking software engineer who accidentally turned himself into a vampire with advanced computational mathematics, then was basically forced into the secret British anti-occult civil service, and has to fight bloodthirsty feudal magical elves who are invading Leeds because they're fleeing a parallel universe full of Eldritch horrors.

It's very funny, yet the culture of the vicious, bloodthirsty elves is actually well-written and distinctive, too. It's a military dictatorship enforced by a magical chain of command. The culture shock that the invaders experience is really interesting.
