Hey Joe, Suns out, new week. Remember to order new tarpaulin.

Joe, The Byrds nearly made a version of Peer Gynt called Gene Tryp (get it) Chestnut Mare was one of the songs but it never got off the ground so to speak.

Can't tell if this is a good or bad foreshadowing for the week, but it sounds great.
  9:10am Gregg:

This sounds a bit like Count Basie. I was lucky enough to see one of his shows.
  9:11am Montclair Mick:

Well said.
  9:12am Dennis Diken:

"Tri-Fi Drums" - yeah! Big Dan Ingram used excerpts for his closing theme and spots on WABC in the 60s. featuring Al Stoller, a great, unsung sticksman who played on Sinatra's 50s Capitol stash!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am melinda:

Thanks for the peppy music Joe. Really dragging this morning and it helps.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am The Oscar:

Mornin' all! I feel like the accordion hatred is largely due to generational association with Lawrence Welk. I think my generation has a similar (though less articulated) aversion to soprano sax thanks to Kenny G.
  9:43am John in Bklyn:

Uh oh, get out your hankies for the stories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am annie:

there has to be an on-going collection of all liner notes ever written... maybe limited to vinyl only?
Avatar 9:44am Joe McG:

@TheOscar: I have to say, I can't stomach soprano sax even when someone I really respect plays it well.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Hugh:

Recently saw Shirley Temple doing Good Ship Lollipop which is pretty much a slow motion train wreck
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am karlward:

So I'm half expecting to hear Joe's take on which song--if any--qualifies as Big Boi's "Lollipop." (Context: Big Boi was asked by his label to come up with something like Lil Wayne's single "Lollipop," and the conversation didn't go well.) www.nytimes.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am The Oscar:

"Candy Licker" by Marvin Sease is a classic in the "Filthy Soul Songs About Lollipops" genre, but decidedly NOT radio friendly. Honestly, he takes it so far it's pretty much a single-entendre.
Avatar 10:07am Joe McG:

These are all fine lollipop and/or sucettes suggestions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am karlward:

Or we could just go straight to "Artichoke" by Cibo Matto. You want to talk about sensual food, that's where I would go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am steveo:

1970s Spain must have been a marvelous place
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am steveo:

Oh... Franco did not die until '75.
Avatar 10:13am Joe McG:

@steveo: I'm happy to report that General Francisco Franco is still dead.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, Joe and Monday Morning Music Maniacs!
Avatar 10:16am Joe McG:

Can anyone out there identify the Alice Cooper Group guitar riff that's being recycled here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am BronwynB:

morning joe and everyone. I desperately want one of the current Weekend Update anchors to say "and in other news Francisco Franco is still dead" and have it be the longest period between iterations of a running joke ever. Because it's not like it's gotten less accurate! I wish they'd had Chevy or Jane do it in the 40th anniversary show. Maybe for the 50th.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am BronwynB:

Avatar 10:20am Joe McG:

@karl: That's the one, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am karlward:

"Good thing I listened to all that Alice Cooper in elementary school" is what I was not thinking just now. And "first time remembering an Alice Cooper song was ever useful in any way" is what I was thinking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am karlward:

Oh man. I did it to myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Stevel:

Ahhhh, I see you working there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Ken From Hyde Park:

If The Fall did a song about Lollipops, it would no doubt be a good one.
Avatar 10:24am βrian:

So I always thought it was "Marky Smith."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am pantz:

Much better than The Eagles
  10:25am rw:

Recycled... Joe, you're so polite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am The Oscar:

It's not that I don't understand the appeal of Kiss, but I don't understand why anyone to whom that appeals wouldn't just listen to Alice Cooper instead.
  10:25am rw:

And good morning!
Avatar 10:26am Sem:

Liking the cello in this (or bowed bass?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am steveo:

Gotta love the collective mind-knowledge of wfmu; also I really wanted Franco to be dead for Dolores Vargas in 1971. She wouldn't have gotten the SNL joke then at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Vincent Nifigance:

@BronwynB Careful...
Avatar 10:31am djsheilab:

Morning Joe + gang! That mini-lollipop set was so much fun. Especially that Coot Grant + Kid Wilson record. They were so naughty in the 30s.

According to my friend Sari, U.F.O. is pronounced "ooh-foe" in Japanese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Vincent Nifigance:

@rw Presumptuous. But I suppose they are naturally suspicious of danger from above...

Avatar 10:34am Joe McG:

@Greg: Nice one, Greg!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am The Oscar:

My mom used to work at an orphanage in Denmark in the '70s-- apparently the kids all loved this song, but they didn't understand the lyrics and thought Poison Ivy was a place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am ChrisB.:

Wow, this is the first time I've noticed the scratching effect in this song!

Avatar 10:40am Joe McG:

@Sem: I would LOVE to hear that!
Avatar 10:40am Sem:

...especially if Our Gang adopted the Twitty hair style.
  10:40am melinda:

@Oscar that's a great story. Now when I hear the song I'll think of 70s Danish orphans having a moment of happiness.

Why did I get on this comment board? I've got work to do. Ugh. Have a good one everybody and thanks as always for making Monday morning enjoyable, Joe!
Avatar 10:46am Joe McG:

Thanks for saying hello, rw! Thanks, Krys O! Hey, LL and anybody I missed...
Avatar 10:46am JakeGould:

Spanky is actually one of the worst of the Little Rascals. Jackie Cooper was so much better.
Avatar 10:47am Jersey Cowboy:

Ahhhhh - I missed Liliput!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Hughie Considine:

Spanky was cute at the beginning. When he learned to speak properly they started making him the focus and the episodes grew increasingly stilted, losing the fun and spontaneity of the classics. And Alfalfa by all accounts was hated by all for his nasty pranks and lousy personality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Vincent Nifigance:

@JakeGould What about Robert Blake?!
Avatar 10:51am βrian:

Alfalfa had to live with the constant pain of his hair. No wonder he was a misanthrope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Hughie Considine:

Vincent: he was known as Mickey Gubitosi, and he was their last would-be star. IMO, he was never in one quality episodes. The last few seasons were total dreck, contrived stories with positive pro-U.S. messages. Give me Miss Crabtree any day.
  10:51am melinda:

I like Pete's voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am BronwynB:

@Vincent: oh i see. i rarely watch the newer episodes. im mostly a fan of the 70s ones

  10:53am melinda:

@annie what was the movie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Hughie Considine:

Bold statement, Joe McG, but I agree Daltrey's vocals have not aged well.
Avatar 10:54am Kurt Gottschalk:

i didn't know "classified" was released as a single. so nice to hear it again. thanks, joe, and yes, i much prefer his singing over that long-haired gym teacher they hired.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Hughie Considine:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Vincent Nifigance:

@BronwynB It was never on here in the UK. I check in on YouTube as it's fertile ground right now, but am a big Andy Kaufman fan, so that era is my only real frame of reference too. Love Andy's audition tape: www.youtube.com...
  10:56am Brendan:

Avatar 10:56am Joe McG:

@Kurt: It's the B of "Let My Love Open the Door" on the UK single. @Alex: I'm glad you liked that, I haven't heard it in years!
  10:56am paul:

Daltrey, hands down. Just for the scream on Won't Get Fooled Again alone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Hughie Considine:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Vincent Nifigance:

Never heard this, this is awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am The Oscar:

@Hughie: Arthur Lee's "Alright NOOOOW!" before the instrumental on "A House Is Not a Motel" still chills me to my bones.
  11:03am Stevel:

Two great screams:

Number of the Beast/Iron Maiden (one of the longer ones, at least.)

Here come Sickness/Mudhoney (third chorus. Very long.)
Avatar 11:06am βrian:

Edvard Munch rates pretty highly there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Vincent Nifigance:

Does the "Heeeeeeeeell" from Michael Campbell's 'Angel Got a Book Today' qualify as a scream?
  11:07am melinda:

I like Roger on Baba O'Riley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am The Oscar:

I suppose "Love Rollercoaster" should make the list too, on account of the various legends attached...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Hughie Considine:

@The Oscar - that is a good one, very much a chilling type of scream as opposed to a joyful cathartic, Daltrey type scream.
Avatar 11:09am JakeGould:

@Vincent: Robert Blake appeared in the Little Rascals when it was way past it’s peak; the Hal Roach studios episodes are classic. The MGM episodes were very shitty and featured “Froggie” one of the worst of the “Rascals” ever.

Chubby, Dorothy, Stymie, Mary Ann… All excellent. Robert Blake was a turd in the Little Rascals during a turd era.

But he was great on Baretta.

Les Sans Cullottes! I found their album at one of my old college radio stations, and they've always held a place in my heart. "Telephone Douche" should have been a huge hit, and I'm not even slightly joking.
  11:12am Dean:

Likewise, I'm fond of Daltrey's "Won't Get Fooled" scream, and of course Vega's in "Frankie." I'd add Darby in a handful of Germs' tunes ("Richie Dagger's Crime," "No God," etc.), and about 90% of Zeke's tunes, wherein Blind Marky Felchtone, at a loss for words, resorts to a howl.
Avatar 11:13am Kurt Gottschalk:

this is the worst rod stewart impersonation i ever heard.

"Lollipop" reminds me of when in the 1980s a friend introduced me to a friend of a friend of his, Beverly Ross. She took me around one day to the things she did, including taking a dance class. (It was like when I went around one day with John Keel.) She was working on show tunes at the time.

Only at the end of the "tour" did she explain that she didn't date, & had a boyfriend. Oh, well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am medson:

  11:18am melinda:

@ngh that makes sense. I'm trying to be more strategic in my choice of search engines since the techtonic discussion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Hughie Considine:

The last great story-song era must have been in the '70s, when the charts were full of songs like “The Night the Lights Went Out on a Midnight Train to Georgia on My Mind, Then They Drove Old Dixie Down.”
Avatar 11:18am dfb:

i listen to this song as a pre-teen drove my mum nuts, she hated bobby's voice. nice one

I take it CW likes coffee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear The Oscar- I had that very thought. The post-coked out slimmed down AARP version leans far that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Rich in Washington:

I once laid in bed, completely immobilized from a hangover-induced migraine, while an early morning country DJ played an entire set - show in fact - of all the songs that either sounded like, were covers of, or response songs to Hotrod Lincoln.
I couldn't even get up to switch it off. It was unbelievably, torturously tedious.

I like Jens Lekman too. Silver Jews' San Francisco BC is one of my favorite story songs. It has swears that would need editing for radio.
Avatar 11:45am Joe McG:

@Brendan: That's an excellent one! I'll do that one next time for sure.
Avatar 11:46am Joe McG:

@melinda: The Silver Jews have great story songs, as does Sun Kil Moon, but there are SO many swears.
  11:46am Mahall:

Love these story songs. Puts me in mind of Robert Earl Keene's Road Goes On Forever....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Rich in Washington:

my wife and I were noting that so many 70s hit songs were story songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am BronwynB:

Interesting the McGovern discussion because I just bought a McGovern '72 pin and an Impeach Nixon pin for my backpack. Because I like to stay topical
  11:48am queems:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Krys O.:

Bad Company is still dear to me.
Avatar 11:49am βrian:

I think I have a "Five Dollars is Fine" pin from the same era. But no one would understand unless they lived in Ann Arbor. Conservatives wanted to boost the fine for possession.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am The Oscar:

I read "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72" in college the summer before the '04 elections. I'm still undecided as to whether that was a great idea or a terrible idea.
  11:50am Listener Robert:

The snake song reminds me of Nixon, in that the voters knew what he was like before they voted for him. Every time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Rich in Washington:

That's a great book, Oscar. Maybe HST's pinnacle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Rich in Washington:

The Fabulous Poodle's Mirror star is the UK/pubrock analog to this song.
Avatar 11:51am Brian in UK:

@Joe for Texas add Terry Allen, just saying.

Ofcourse you could do all the States. Just play John Stewart then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am karlward:

"Shooting Star" sounds an awful lot like "And It Stoned Me" by Van Morrison. I was trying to figure out why different lyrics were coming into my head while I heard this.
