hi Danny
Avatar 10:01pm

Let's take off to Peru...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm
Little Danny:

Cool Blue Faves: melinda and geez. Hello!

We’re all tuned in here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Little Danny:

Duuuuuuddde. Nice to see ya here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm

hey Danny and chilly blues
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm

...with perfect precision missed whomever filled in for Evan this week. long strange trip home.
zonk ludlow:

Hiya Danny & all other flamers. Very heavy headed on this day. Long session mourning the monumental losses of Mark E Smith & Hugh Masekela last night. They will both be missed in my orbit. I'll be sitting quietly up the back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Little Danny:

Coela Coela Coelacanth you gorgeous ancient fish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Little Danny:

Hi Zonk! These things seem to come in waves, no? So glad to have you, even if you're at the back of the class
Avatar 10:11pm

Beautiful segue,Danny. :)

Glad you're home safe from your trip, Coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Little Danny:

Thanks geez! I'm so stoked any time the segues come through
zonk ludlow:

Cheers Danny, had this drunken vision not so many hours ago of Joe Frank & MES arguing over the cab fare at the pearly gates, much to my buddies amusement. Those two would indulge in great conversation I'm sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Little Danny:

That's an amazing vision, zonk. My drunken visions (back when I really drank) mostly involved a lot of bad ideas
zonk ludlow:

Twas a very strange evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm

This Popol Vuh track is lovely.
Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Little Danny:

Doctor! I agree. I know like 5% of Popul Vuh's catalog
zonk ludlow:

You've obviously tapped into a gorgeous 5%.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

That's 5% more than I do...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm

I like Association-style songs.
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm

hi danny, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Little Danny:

Heya Jason! Lovely to have ya here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Little Danny:

@melinda: I want a whole 45 box full of Association-style songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm

Odd, but cool set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Little Danny:

Haha, I think I have an oddness factor often working. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm

Reminds me, Eddie Palmieri is playing in Jersey, think I have to pick me up some tickets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Little Danny:

I would love to see Palmieri. Go see him while he's still kicking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

g Thanks for the well wishes (10.11) i've just got the unusually heavy sofa off my car roof and into the house. it took 2 people 50 minutes and
...it doesn't fit!
-i think i'll have a drink.
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:04pm

That 'Manhattan Latin' lp is one I've seen people discuss, never heard anything off of it before tonight. Pretty cool.
Avatar 11:05pm

a brief hello. have that drink, coel.

Heard Palmieri at Yoshi's in Oakland, and yeah, he was cooking. Probably thirteen years ago or so.
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:08pm

you can call him ray, or you can call him jay ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm

Yeah, seems a no brainer, line up some folks to catch him (doesn't say what context he's playing in, solo, small band, guessing not a big band or it would say. Never have seen him...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm

This Saturday night, will see Roscoe Mitchell with the Matthew Shipp trio, should be fun!
Gotta crash, work is rediculously busy, need my beauty sleep, bye all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm

...i don't know much of popol vuh either; maybe 15-20%? i really don't know...but i really like the album "in den gärten pharaos/aguirre", which is 2 albums now available as one release, is a favorite of mine. the 2 albums are each short and they work together...if anyone's interested.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm

hey hyde!

RM & MS will be a killer show. Wish I could go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Little Danny:

Dean! Hyde! All my best customers are arriving
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm

Cheers {clink}
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
Little Danny:

@coel: I think I know that album/s at least digitally, gotta check

A 1990 Chicago Tribune article refers to Byrd as "the Satchmo of the steel guitar."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm

it's so obvious the influence for the Hal Davis track... beyond "just influence"; but it's still worth it! very good.
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:28pm

great ordells track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Little Danny:

Anything influenced by the Flamingos' "I Only Have Eyes..." is gonna merit some interest around here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Little Danny:

Do you know anything about the Ordells, Jason? I'm coming up empty-handed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

...and i was looking to see what album that o'jays track might've appeared on, and i confess i had no idea they had 29 studio albums. i have 4 and i thought i had a respectable representation haha!
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

i know the flip of sippin' is a groovy instrumental track...
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:33pm

. . . and my (admittedly brief) internet research just now finds that Give The Drummer's own Funky 16 Corners has a blog entry for "sippin' a cup of coffee".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Little Danny:

@coel: oh man they recorded so much. Talk about knowing about 5% of a discography
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm

i liked the ordells song too. never heard of them before.
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:34pm

From F16C blog: "The Ordells 45 was released in 1967 and as far as I can tell they never recorded another note. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to discover that they had nothing at all to do with the instrumental, which leaves us with one, absolutely incredible performance, committed to vinyl and then largely forgotten.

I have seen several references that indicate that ‘Sippin’ a Cup of Coffee’ has similarly affected many others, and that it may have something of a lowrider following, but aside from that, it remains the property of soul collectors."
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:36pm

*blog entry from Aug 29 2013.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Little Danny:

Thanks for the research Jason!

I'm finding references in, e.g., Billboard, to Richard Rome, the arranger. In 1968 he formed Allert Prods. with Al Martino's personal manager.
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:39pm

we owe larry (permanent, ongoing) thanks for his fantastic blog!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm

it always makes me sad. somebody lied; record company had no faith; no capital; somebody didn't come through; had to get on with life....who knows what might've been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Little Danny:

@dean: Yeah Rome was a pretty steady Philly-area arranger/composer type. I think he was Philly area

Curiously, also in '68, he set up a prod'n co., Producers, Inc., with a fellow named Brooks Odell...
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:41pm

this axelrod album is one that i don't tire of.
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:42pm

@dean - brooks odell sounded familiar ... and it's because i have a 45 of his, 'watch your step' on gold records.

Yes, evidently Odell was quite prolific. Coincidence, I assume. Rome must have been Philly area.
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:45pm

@dean -- off topic, but i did enjoy the nixon book you suggested. i chuckled picturing him on a profane tirade while listening to 'victory at sea'.

Good to hear, @JtotheK! Lotsa chuckle (or weep) moments in that one.
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:48pm

yeah, i was hoping the author would have made up a story about Nixon putting Quaker Oats on his enemy list because they refused to admit he was the model for the 'Quaker Oats' guy on the container.
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:51pm

back to the Ordells ... scrolling down on the F16C blog finds this comment: "The song was co-written by Lee Andrews and sang by The Ordells. The lead was superbly delivered by the late Henry (need Ronald) Eleby, backed by Moses (nee Thomas) Eleby, Thomas Matthews, Archie and Clifford (last names not known). As you correctly stated, they didn’t record
another song, although they were at least as good as the more well known Philadelphia groups and more polished than most. Sadly, through bad management, it all fell apart not long after the release of the song. Ronald was briefly recruited by Motown to replace the late great Eddie Kendricks before they finally went with Damon Harris (again management). I am proud to say that I am the youngest brother of Ronnie and Tommy Eleby."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm

i like a surprise ending!
Avatar 💍 Swag For Life Member 11:57pm

thanks for the tunes, danny. good evening everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm

Thanks Danny! have a good night everyone
zonk ludlow:

Thanks Danny for a blissful two hours which soothed my aching brow. Until next week etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03am
Little Danny:

Thanks y'all! (And glad it helped you, Zonk.) See you around. Luv to everyone
