A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@ Ken from HP - There was a good article in the NYT about how Trump is ripping the mask of benevolence from Davos--showing it as a bunch of greedheads who are thinking "well, Trump is everything that Davos is supposed to hate but he is making us a ton of money."

I was 10 when John Lennon died. I had just gotten into the Beatles, and a local Philly station played Beatles A-Z on repeat for what seemed to be the whole week, and now it's in my blood. Brutal Times call for Beautiful Measures. Bring on the Fall!

Kinda tired of people being shocked at Trump’s behavior. When was his behavior ever acceptable? 1+ year into this mess and I honestly think he’ll get re-elected in 2020 at this rate. Maybe a more “reasonable” Republican will come in and take over; I mean George W. Bush has a high approval rating nowadays, right? And all of the stupid witty tote bags and t-shirts in the world will not change that.

I really like the Brix Smith era of the Fall. At least some joy and life in the middle of the dourness of Mark E.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am TomDash:

c.r.e.e.p. is a favorite. Spun it on the radio many, many times...first turned onto them by my older brother dubbing cassette for me in high school mid-80s; it was the Brix era so it will always be a sentimental favorite period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am sphere:

@JakeGould - in 2017, the Dems rolled over the Republicans in special elections and won a Senate seat too. Don't underestimate them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am melinda:

@Jake I know what you mean. If shock and outrage lead to strategic action then it's a good thing, but too often it does not.
Avatar 10:04am JakeGould:

@sphere: Senate and Congressional seats are one thing. On a national level, who can go toe-to-toe against the Republicans come 2020? Name me ONE person who can be a candidate. An effective one.
Avatar 10:04am northguineahills:

@JakeGould: Yeah, good point on Brix Smith.
Avatar 10:04am Chris from DC:

Oh, thanks, did not know about that Lake Ruth gig here.
Avatar 10:05am Wild Neil:

I see Trump as an outsider who is challenging a rigged system. The Republican Party per se is for the most part a waste of space. They left me, I didn't leave them. They are sellouts and whores. That is my opinion. However, I think Barack Obama did 2 things right:
1. He opened talks with Cuba. That should have happened like 40 years ago.
2. He extended unemployment insurance in 2009-2010 when I was out of work a year.
THAT being said I will always be aligned with Trump. I think he is doing a good job, from my perspective. From most of your points of view you probably think I am an uneducated redneck. Actually, I am an educated redneck.
There are a LOT of people who voted for Trump who are keeping it quiet for fear of reprisals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am pantz:

Trump is doing a good job, huh? What's his handicap now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am sphere:

@JakeGould - I can think of more than one Dem who would be good Presidential candidate, but I don't want to get too far in the weeds. Just say that I disagree.

@ Wild Neil - what pantz said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am SSS:

The reprisals for voting for trump will be visited on all of us. Don't for a second think that even he knows what they will be.
Avatar 10:10am Wild Neil:

@Jake Gould-that Dem candidate is probably being groomed right now.
@Pantz-yes, from my Catholic perspective he got a pro-life judge on SCOTUS. THAT ALONE makes it all worth it to me.
  10:11am Dean:

The new Hollie Cook arrived at home two days ago. It's lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am melinda:

@Neil I think he is doing a horrible job but I don't think you are an uneducated redneck. Also, a lot of the current horribleness is from the Republican congress, not just the prez.
Avatar 10:12am northguineahills:

This Hollie Cook has a nice old-school lovers rock feel (it sounds if small change was working the decks).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am SSS:

Why not legislate through admitting a belief in magic? Immaculate legislation.
Avatar 10:13am Wild Neil:

The Republican congress has been an opposition party for so long, they don't know how to get anything done. I heard that on the radio and I think its true.
Avatar 10:14am βrian:

The GOP has no interest in preserving life. You can see that in their funding priorities. Government intervention in personal health matters is all about control and subjugation. Cuz once a kid is born, that kid is of no use to Republicans.
  10:14am Polyus:

Haha, fear of reprisals? As opposed to agencies like DOJ and enforcement bodies like ICE used for real, actual intimidation and reprisals against activists, immigrants - basically anyone not seen as making America great again. And please spare me the racially coded language like “globalist”. That was never used outside places like Stormfront before this administration.

Wild Neil, these people know that we are complacent until our myths are threatened. They work us like tiny violins. We all need to realize that we do not know god, so if you want to use what you think he said, that is fine, just do not think you can be sure what he meant.
Avatar 10:16am βrian:

To be fair, "globalist", originally meant corporatist, but that was over 20 years ago when NAFTA was being negotiated. I'm not sure what it refers to any more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am melinda:

@Polyus there are different degrees of reprisals, I agree, but Neil's point about people not feeling comfortable voicing Trump support is one we should pay attention to. I would rather know where people stand and think a general climate of open hostility towards opposing political views isn't going to move us forward.

@Trouble: So cool! I sprained my ankle so I had to spend more time just hanging out at home than usual this past weekend. Managed to finally get my next door neighbor’s dog to trust me.

Cutest dog ever! A mix between a Dachshund and a Yorkie. Like a tiny, furry long Chewbacca.

Found out the dog is a rescue dog. It an it’s 7 siblings were found in a basement in the Lower East Side. They just all lived in that dank basement. But because of that she is sensitive to sounds from the front door… Also scare of stray cats since they bullied the dogs in the basement.

But happy I am friends with it now!!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am BronwynB:

dammit guys, i started drinking coffee again to have more energy and get more done at work, instead it's just given me more energy to type enthusiastic playlist comments

@bronwyn i drink decaf or the same thing happens to me
Avatar 10:52am βrian:

My morning poison is a triple espresso, though sometimes I forget and barely miss it.
Avatar 10:52am Wild Neil:

@Bronwyn-that is exactly the effect I am after when I drink some coffee! Seriously, you might be having some kind of reaction. Tea is a little weaker for caffeine, Green Tea is good for you, it can help you live longer. Try it! It takes the edge off the caffeine craving too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am listener james from westwood:

@BronwyonB: I stopped drinking daily caffeine some years back, so when I DO caffeinate, I'm a total chatterbox. You'll get my life story for the price of a cup of full-strength java.
Avatar 10:53am TDK60:

Yerba mate is my fave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Lewis:

I am anxiously waiting for the seminar room to clear so that I can get to the coffee....
Avatar 10:54am Wild Neil:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE coffee. It's my favorite drug. And its yummy!
Avatar 10:54am βrian:

If you're drinking a lighter roast, you might try shifting to a dark roast which generally has less caffeine. (for a given amount of coffee beans.)
Avatar 10:55am northguineahills:

@TDK60: Drinking yerba mate right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am ɛɨk:

Agreed, green tea is better. But green teas vary wildly in taste, quality, and caffeine levels. For teabags, I recommend Trader Joe's, or in a pinch, Salada. Many of the others are vile, or taste like nothing, or worst of all, taste *fishy*. For loose leaf, Ten Ren.
Avatar 10:55am βrian:

Seminarians have an insatiable thirst for coffee, I hear.

No caffeine after late morning except maybe on weekends. Can't do it anymore.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Adrian in London:

@TDK60 OK, I'll play along: "Totally wired?!"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am melinda:

@Bronwyn maybe you have the genes for rapid caffeine metabolism, which means a quicker buzz. I get that and had to quit the caffeine, except for little bits here and there. Tea caffeine is absorbed more slowly, they say.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Passaic River Blues:

@Trouble: are you a fan of Katherine Mansfield? I am reading a collection with an introduction by Elizabeth Bowen that is knock-you-down good. Also, the Joe Bataan broadcast last week was aces; had to listen on the archives as I was traveling, but then it felt like a gift to myself.
Avatar 11:15am TDK60:

Now that we're safely on animals, does anyone know the punchline to a joke that was on the comments board here several years back? : What's the difference between a duck call and an accordion? I answered with the wrong answer but thought it was a funny answer anyway. Anyone know the joke?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am zopa:

Q: What is the definition of an optimist? A: An accordion player with a pager.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am melinda:

this is a very pretty song
Avatar 11:17am βrian:

We had an incredibly hard time finding an accordion player for our wedding. Few and far between.
  11:19am Dean:

Thanks to a comment here some time ago, I checked out, read, and admired Muriel Spark's The Girls of Slender Means. Now a mention of Katherine Mansfield and Elizabeth Bowen intrigues me...but I only have so much time to read! I'm about 1/4 way through Sir Walter Scott's Waverly, which is a delight, then I hope to move on to Brian Aldiss's An Age (pub'd as Cryptozoic in the US) and Virginia Woolf's The Waves.
Avatar 11:19am TDK60:

Brian - But wait - dreadlocked hipster accordionist buskers were everywhere not so long ago.
Avatar 11:19am Trouble:

i don't know her passaic river blues. just looked her up: NZ! reading janet frame right now, love her. AND i thought of you: just finished a book by harriet paige ' man with a seagull on his head' quite magical. can mail it to you if you like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am steveo:

a band I enjoy, Bombay Rickey, has an accordion and plays often at Barbés in Park Slope (have also played live on FMU)...
  11:20am Dean:

Maybe that's the answer to your joke query, TDK60. You're more likely to find a duck call at a wedding.
Avatar 11:21am TDK60:

My wrong answer: You wouldn't take an accordion hunting.
Avatar 11:21am βrian:

What we *really* wanted was a bandoneon player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Lewis:

@TDK - pretty good (and your comedic timing is exquisite)
Avatar 11:23am βrian:

Florencia couldn't make it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Passaic River Blues:

@Dean: I've been meaning to read that Aldiss for a long time. Sounds fantastic.

@Trouble: She's phenomenal. I should get this to you. And I love the title there--"Man with a Seagull on His Head". Just can't go wrong with that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am steveo:

wonderful show today, Trouble; this set is just gorgeous
  11:25am Dean:

I read Cryptozoic c.'77 on a recommendation. I have only a vague recollection of it, and I tend not to drift into science fiction. Yet the book is dedicated to James Blish for his Cities in Flight series, and I have a hankering to go there, too. And then Samuel Delaney's Dhalgren, and so forth. But first, Virginia Woolf.
Avatar 11:27am TDK60:

Ah, 1982.
  11:29am Polyus:

Currently reading Enemies Of The System by Aldiss. Hothouse (aka The Long Afternoon of Earth) is always a good place to start.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Passaic River Blues:

@Dean: I have had "Dhalgren" on a shelf near my bed for something like five years. I also rarely dip into science fiction but that one I'd like to crack someday, along with Aldiss.
  11:30am Polyus:

And I enjoyed Cryptozoic, though apparently the author himself did not think much of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am AndrewC.:

It's always confusing when someone plays another show's bed music.
Avatar 11:34am northguineahills:

Ahh, this Sun Ra is one of Jesse Kamisky's bed musics...
Avatar 11:34am Trouble:

@passaic can you email me? troubleatwfmudotorg and we can figure out how to get harriet paige to you. i had to order it from uk, so it's not around here
  11:35am Polyus:

Jeff at destination:Out uses it too. This is the first time I have heard the whole thing though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Rich in Washington:

Wow. Sun Ra's on Bandcamp.
Avatar 11:36am TDK60:

Is that a duck call in the Sun Ra tune?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am AndrewC.:

Yes, it sounds weird without Jeff talking over it :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Rich in Washington:

I've always loved this track. It's like a theme song from a sitcom in the Eraserhead universe.
Avatar 11:36am northguineahills:

You're correct, Polyus
  11:37am Dean:

"Is that a duck call in the Sun Ra tune?"

That, or an accordion. Or a bandoneon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Passaic River Blues:

@Trouble: Will do!
Avatar 11:39am TDK60:

Is there a duck call joke website? I know there are banjo joke sites.
Avatar 11:41am βrian:

What about tattoo joke sites?
Avatar 11:42am Wild Neil:

This Hunllef sounds like 1982 or Blade Runner for some reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am zopa:

Q: What says "Quick, Quick!"?

A: A duck with the hiccups
Avatar 11:45am βrian:

Now, an accordionist with the hiccups ...
Avatar 11:46am TDK60:

Speaking of writers, does anyone like Urusla K. LeGuin, who just passed? -- one of my all time faves.

@zopa: So there really is nothing new under the sun.
Avatar 11:53am TDK60:

Is there such a thing as Fall jokes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Rich in Washington:

@TDK60: most revolve around the band's immense membership over the years. Like, "I just looked, and turns out I was in The Fall for about two months in 1981".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am zopa:

How do you fix a broken pumpkin?
With a pumpkin patch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am zopa:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Rich in Washington:

A woman goes into a tattoo parlor, and asks for a tattoo of Nick Cave on one inner thigh, and Iggy Pop on the other. After it's done, she's displeased with the likenesses and complains bitterly.
The tattoo artist, indignantly, tells her "look lady! Go outside and show the first person my work, and they'll immediately recognize their faces!"
She hautily complies, going outside into the late night pavement. She sees a teetering skid row bum, stops him and proceeds to hike her skirt to show off her new tattoos.
The drunk reels a bit, covers one eye for focus, and says "I don't know who the two guys on your legs are, but that rotten sonofabitch in the middle is Mark E. Smith of The Fall!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Rich in Washington:

Thank you, Trouble.
