Great book by Dorothy Baker that was based somewhat on Beiderbecke.

Michael 98145:

from the internetwork : "At the end of 1959, Dollar Brand (later known as Abdullah Ibrahim), Kippie Moeketsi, Makhaya Ntshoko, Johnny Gertze and Hugh formed the Jazz Epistles, the first African jazz group to record an LP."

Jeff Moore:

A reminder to listeners who want to hear this killer tribute sounding as good as possible: if you're using a standalone audio player (VLC, iTunes, something like that) check out the "128k AAC" link near the top of the page. I believe it sounds better than the 128k MP3 stream we've had forever - especially in the better way AAC handles vinyl surface noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Passaic River Blues:

I love that Tom Wilson figures into this story. ... The internet says it's Larry Willis killing it on the piano here. Loving this.
Avatar 1:05pm
kwhitehead:

I don't know. I kind of like the "vinyl surface noise."
Avatar 1:06pm
Jshatan:

Jeff Moore - dropping science. Thanks for the tip - just switched!
  1:11pm
JakeGould:

@Jeff: What about the WFMU app? What is the stream being used there? 128k MP3?
Avatar 1:14pm
geezerette:

Greetings from California waking!
Avatar 1:14pm
Jeff Moore:

@kwhitehead - I'm not suggesting that the AAC stream gets rid of vinyl surface noise - that would be a whole 'nouther type of processing, which would probably do other violence to the music.

No, what I suggest is that AAC handles quick impulses (like vinyl ticks and pops especially) better in that it passes them through closer to unchanged, which allows our ear/brain system to recognize them as something other than the music and tune them out somewhat.

What MP3 seems to me to do is turn a quick sharp tick into a slightly lower amplitude but longer and messier sound which gets mixed in with the music more.
Avatar 1:16pm
Jeff Moore:

@JakeGould: I believe the apps and popups are currently using the MP3 stream. This may change sometime in the future.

Now, sorry for the interruption - let's listen to Duane play HM!
