Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yay, happy birthday!
  7:06pm Listener Robert:

No, they IDd as "at Upsala College" or "in Upsala College" forever before that. Unless you mean for only a short time AFTER that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm common:

happy happy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm melinda:

I've been trying to get on Instagram but things keep malfunctioning.
Avatar 7:08pm TehBadDr:

May you have a pleasant chronological advancement Emily!
  7:09pm Emily:

Thanks everybody!
Avatar 7:09pm kimzilla:

@Listener Robert, it's likely he was saying that it was a short time after that episode... which was in 1995.
Avatar 7:12pm TehBadDr:

String Theory! I forgot what the level below Strings was called, but Physicists are some strange people, musicians are even weirder!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Richard S:

Physicist, musician, gamer?
  7:13pm Emily:

Physicist, musician, gamer, AND...
Avatar 7:13pm kimzilla:

Avatar 7:13pm TehBadDr:

AND...Emily leaves us hanging!
  7:14pm Emily:

Kim & I wanted to know how to become YouTube famous. No reason. Just curious.
  7:14pm Emily:

No agenda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Richard S:

Anyone can be a YouTuber these days. Getting famous, on the other hand - and getting famous for something worthwhile.....
Avatar 7:15pm TehBadDr:

Salary job, I need that again!
  7:15pm Emily:

@TehBadDr: you and me both...
Avatar 7:16pm kimzilla:

To have a 100 million hits on their videos blow my mind. Who knew you can play video games and be a ninja/ retired physicist and make a living. It's wild.
  7:17pm Steve:

Hey Richard S., do you you we're well past "In The Future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes" ?
  7:18pm Emily:

Do you guys know about Poppy?? Someone just showed me this recently.
Avatar 7:20pm kimzilla:

Which I learned from Brian that thats a whole different thing being a Youtube Vlogger. He was like, that shits crazy, lol!
  7:20pm dez:

i've heard of poppy. a podcast i listen to went off the deep end on Poppy. its a little unsettling and i want nothing to do with it but it might be genius
Avatar 7:21pm kimzilla:

Poppy is even crazier- www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Richard S:

If there's a YouTuber I "follow", it's Brady Haran. He's the guy behind such channels as Periodic Videos, Numberphile, Deep Sky Videos, and Objectivity.
  7:22pm Emily:

@dez, yeah...I found it deeply unsettling, I don’t think I get it AT ALL, but whenever I feel that way I always just wonder if I am missing something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm chris:

really enjoying this interview!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm chris:

oh, hi, Emily and kimzilla! and happy birthday, Emily!
  7:26pm Emily:

Hi Chris! Thank you!
  7:26pm Steve:

How does one make an independent living from being on YouTube ?
  7:26pm maxisaperson:

Hi everyone, enjoying the show so far. I've been watching Game Grumps for years so this interview was a pleasant surprise <3
  7:28pm Emily:

@maxisaperson oh, awesome! It’s new terrain for us, but interesting. Thanks for chiming in, and welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm chris:

here's how youtube describes making money on youtube - creatoracademy.youtube.com...
Avatar 7:28pm kimzilla:

Mostly ad sales Steve. Especially for Game Grumps its all about ads. It's on average, but the range is pretty wide, is that for every 2 million views you make $2,000. For his other gig Ninja Sex Party, its more about the music sales, since they only do about 6 produced videos a year. What a hustle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Richard S:

Weird Al's been making hits longer than the groups he's parodying have been making music.
  7:30pm Steve:

Gotcha, Kimzilla. Thanks. I imagine it would be very hard to live off of the ad sales ?
  7:32pm Emily:

@Steve I think for most people it is, but some youtubers post hundreds of videos a year and get millions and millions of views.
Avatar 7:32pm kimzilla:

hundreds of millions!
  7:33pm Steve:

Thanks, Emily. That would do it.
  7:33pm Emily:

So I think some people really CAN do that, which is bananas. Like the “vloggers” (or some of them). But for these guys, they also get $ from album sales, concerts, merch...
  7:34pm Emily:

It’s still crazy to me that this is a career option, though.
Avatar 7:35pm kimzilla:

We need to interview some rollerskating break dancers Emily!
  7:35pm Steve:

I agree, Emily. It's beyond me what will click for Joe Average out here to make a living off of YouTube if you're not a pro musician.
  7:36pm Kate:

a roller skating breakdancing commune, who knew
Avatar 7:37pm kimzilla:

Ahh Kate is here, now everything feels alright!
  7:37pm Emily:

I want to find this commune. And maybe join it.
  7:39pm Steve:

Youtube can do live streaming I think. But there's so many twitch streams that are just garbage or boring
  7:40pm Hypertoast:

Oh man, I have fond memories of burger time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm chris:

a friend of my oldest son was making money for a while by having people watch him play video games. weird.
  7:41pm Listener Robert:

I was a HS & college classmate of Marc Blank, founder of Infocom. On a programmable calculator at school, I programmed a random number generator for his & Alex Citron's simulator of a major league baseball season.
  7:41pm Steve:

Burger Time was one of the all time fun video arcade games !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Ken From Hyde Park:

WFMU has a Vimeo channel for Monty Hall and other live performances. Is there a WFMU youtube channel to view behind-the-scenes stuff like lava lamp vs. bean bag fights and such?
  7:43pm Kate:

Holy cow I need a hurp durp that I can use on the news at night.
Avatar 7:43pm kimzilla:

@Ken, that is an epic idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Richard S:

One arcade game I remember was called "Food Fight". You played a character called "Chuck", and flung handfuls of food at chefs who were trying to keep you from getting to an ice cream cone. The fun thing was that every few levels, it would stop and do a replay of your last level.
  7:45pm Listener Robert:

Oh, you mean like Octopus or whatever they call it, the radio studio cam, Ken Hyde? Once Pat Byrne had that on for his DJing the final half hour of his show following the playing of a recorded show from Monty.
  7:45pm Hypertoast:

I had food fight for Atari. I loved that game!
  7:45pm JakeGould:

YouTube fame is seductive, but it’s not as easy as it sounds. On a most basic level, YouTube takes 45% of revenue and then taxes are 30% of what is left. You need to be pulling in significant views to be making a livable income. And none of that factors in production costs and the headaches of others ripping off your content or generally sabotaging you.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Switchblade Batman:

I just got my ass canned Kim, so I can collect unemployment
  7:49pm Steve:

You can't collect unemployment if you've been fired.
  7:50pm JakeGould:

@chris: But how much money did your son make?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm chris:

yeah, i've had a job like that. headaches all the time that wouldn't go away with headache pills. i had had enough one day and just quit, with nothing lined up. fortunately, i picked up another gig before too long.
  7:50pm JakeGould:

@chris: Oh! I meant friend of your son.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm chris:

not much, i don't think, but some spending cash, JG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm chris:

i think i remember a few hundred bucks per month extra, but he had to put in insane hours, so he got tired of it.
Avatar 7:52pm Tom Miller:

Cubicle farm training facility is going to be my new name for the student computer room!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Switchblade Batman:

Moderating comments for a right wing site, easily in the top 3 worst jobs I ever had.
  7:54pm JakeGould:

@chris: That’s the thing. As someone who quit jobs cold myself, I have no problem with it. But sometimes you lose perspective on the actual cost of money being made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Richard S:

Long story - too long for this board - but I once found myself on the job literally holding up a wall for about 20 min. By the way, I have a M.S. in astronomy, and I'm a clerical worker for my county sheriff's office.
  7:58pm JakeGould:

The hustle economy is the worst. Sorry to be a downer but workers are being screwed in this equation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Richard S:

Hear you next week!
Avatar 7:59pm kimzilla:

Thanks for a great board tonight folks!
