Listener comments!

Avatar 12:04am Erik in Michigan:

Up past my bedtime again, and not because I'm listening to a phish show :)
  12:04am rw:

Hello! Nice opener. Some themes seem to transcend time.
  12:08am MONEYBAG$:

Spaced out on mucinex and ready to go
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09am sberger:

Evening/Morning all. Always nice to look forward to this show after weeks that are becoming seemingly more complex.
Avatar 12:10am Erik in Michigan:

This is great
  12:11am Eartha Lime:

Listening live this week, thanks again - in advance.
Avatar 12:11am franny:

I'm listening in spirit.
Avatar 12:12am franny:

@sberger you're tellin' me.
  12:12am MONEYBAG$:

Listening in advance from next week
Avatar 12:14am Jeff Conklin:

Morning, all. Feeling a tad under the weather myself. Never fucked with mucinex though....
  12:15am MONEYBAG$:

It's some last resort shit...been bedridden for days
  12:15am Woodland Willy:

@ericinmichigan: maybe not up late listening to a Phish show, but up late listening to lazy lightening/supplication? ;)
Avatar 12:15am Jeff Conklin:

Bummer, Money. Do that lemon, ginger, honey tea hot with cayenne pepper.
Avatar 12:15am tuner fish:

I usually get to hear a few tracks, fall asleep, then listen to the archives all week. And I keep revisiting my favorite shows. September 19, 2016 is phenomenal, by the way, in case anyone hasn't heard it! :-D
  12:16am Hippie Jesus:

hello one and all!
Avatar 12:16am Jeff Conklin:

I think Sept 19 mightve been the saddest show i ever did. Glad you liked it!
Avatar 12:16am Erik in Michigan:

I've been spotted!
Avatar 12:18am Erik in Michigan:

Some big CSN vibes from this track
Avatar 12:19am tuner fish:

no no no - It was 9/19/16 with Love, Relatively Clean Rivers, The Byrds... it was the first "Hello, California listeners!" show! Definitely not sad!
  12:21am MONEYBAG$:

JC when was this show on before Therese left?
Avatar 12:22am Jeff Conklin:

yeah ive been on air over 3 years.
  12:23am MONEYBAG$:

I mean what was the old slot
Avatar 12:24am Erik in Michigan:

Used to be 3-6am prior to fall 2016, i think.
Avatar 12:24am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Hello, great show so far!
  12:26am MONEYBAG$:

That's what I thought, there were some shows that I used to listen to in my sleep
Avatar 12:29am Erik in Michigan:

Jeff, what's your favorite Grateful Dead year of the 80s?
Avatar 12:30am tuner fish:

I finally watched "Long Strange Trip" on Amazon. Excellent!
Avatar 12:31am tuner fish:

AND - I just watched that John Coltrane doc on Netflix. It has been on my list for a while now, but I finally watched it now. Winter break allows for these things, haha. Very inspiring!
Avatar 12:31am Jeff Conklin:

Avatar 12:32am Erik in Michigan:

Coltrane Doc was OK - but the amount of talking heads was a bit much for me.
Avatar 12:33am Erik in Michigan:

yeah, 89 was a good year
Avatar 12:33am tuner fish:

I mean - I consider myself a big Coltrane fan, and, from the trailer, I wasn't that impressed, but of course I HAD to watch it. I liked the segment with the Japanese guy who met Coltrane in Nagasaki. That was very touching. I think it was pretty well-made, but of course it wasn't a comprehensive account of his life and works. It would be nice to see one of those someday.
Avatar 12:35am tuner fish:

"Ken Burns presents: 10 DVD's OF JOHN COLTRANE!" ... THAT'S what I want! haha
  12:37am bbb:

Hi all! Happy new year (hopefully)...Really digging this El Congreso song.
  12:39am bbb:

haha, used Google translate for the lyrics to that song: You rebel but you lie. I no longer believe in your song. The city has bewitched you. The swamp closed. You like to live the cage. You like to offer your head. You believe you are the king of the land Andrajo of nature. Man of the city, medium Master of the trivial, dwarf. Black butterfly small piece at night. You will see every day the sun gridded by windows and twisted beams. You will see your eyes so hated The panorama of buildings like fog. Receive my song and leave Or die in your law, dwarf.
Avatar 12:40am tuner fish:

Definitely the Spanish "Like A Rolling Stone" haha
  12:40am MONEYBAG$:

I'm still feeling out the 80s dead but my impression is that Jerry is pretty bad in the middle
Avatar 12:42am Erik in Michigan:

I was once afraid of 80s dead, and that was a mistake
  12:44am Agent Peter:

How is "80's Dead" a thing?
Avatar 12:45am tuner fish:

The only exposure to the GD I have is from this show, and the Sirius Grateful Dead Channel. And a few friends who like them. But, yeah, every time "The 80's" shows up, my first reaction is "Oh no!" but sometimes it is amazing. I mean, sometimes the NINETIES are amazing! I just heard a show from 91 this week that blew me away! Excellent band! Just kept on going! Is that what it's about? Just following that spark until it the light is no more?
  12:46am Dean:

As I've mentioned several times on Uncle Michael's show on the Drummer stream, I attended every Grateful Dead show from the very beginning. I'll concur with the '89 call, though I also recall fondly shows from '84 and '86.
Avatar 12:46am Jeff Conklin:

plenty of amazing in the 80s and 90s don't listen to anyone who says there isn't. All due respect, Agent Peter.
Avatar 12:46am Jeff Conklin:

Dean=Bob Weir
Avatar 12:47am Erik in Michigan:

The 80s were a strange / great decade for the Dead.
  12:47am Dean:

I met Bob a couple times, but no, I'm not him.
Avatar 12:48am Erik in Michigan:

  12:48am Dean:

I guess I should mention that I first met him when I was playing hooky from second grade.
  12:48am bbb:

Dean - Did you see any Warlocks shows?
  12:48am Dean:

Warlocks? That's ridiculous! I'm not that old.
Avatar 12:49am Erik in Michigan:

Dean what was your first show?
  12:49am bbb:

Haha well you said you attended every Dead show from the beginning!
Avatar 12:49am Jeff Conklin:

Forgive me if I'm skeptical, Dean. Feel free to email me yr credentials ;)
Avatar 12:50am Erik in Michigan:

New Riders!
  12:50am Dean:

I just managed to catch all the shows--every one of them--as the Dead from the get-go. No biggie.
Avatar 12:53am Erik in Michigan:

Dean what's your favorite Vince song?
  12:54am Agent Peter:

Which two years in the 80's were most like one another? The idea that one entire decade had a distinct and uniform identity is a massive over-simplification.
Avatar 12:55am Jeff Conklin:

Oh, I see what youre getting at, Agent. You have a point. As im sure you know people dismiss the decade out of hand without good inspecion...
  12:56am Dean:

Hard to argue with his work on "White Punks on Dope."
  12:59am Agent Peter:

The only reason for isolating that decade is if someone had strong feelings about Brent Mydland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08am Fud:

37% is just about right.
  1:09am Mitch:

Dallas Taylor also in Ohio Knox. Thanks for the shoutout. I’m only an semi authority up to 1987.
Avatar 1:11am Ari M.:

Wasn't richard thompson's shoot out the lights an 80s album? Or maybe late 70s
  1:12am MONEYBAG$:

I only know about the dead and Jandek, that is all my parents allowed in the house
Avatar 1:13am tuner fish:

What's Jandek's best decade?
  1:13am Konstantinov:

think that Morning band actually had a 2nd album too. On Fantasy or something like that? never gripped a copy myself
  1:13am MONEYBAG$:

The 80s!
Avatar 1:16am Jeff Conklin:

I hate being corrected but thank you Konstantinov ;)
  1:16am Dean:

You are correct, Konstantinov: https://www.discogs.com/Morning-Struck-Like-Silver/master/556556
Avatar 1:16am Jeff Conklin:

AriL Yes, its from 82 i believe..
  1:21am Konstantinov:

oh yeah, wasn't trying to be "that guy" pedant .. like i say, never even seen/heard the lp myself .. but thought i'd throw it out there in case ya wanted to put it on yr wantlist
Avatar 1:23am Jeff Conklin:

Yeah, ts strange i never looked. Its ok to be that guy sometimes..
Avatar 1:25am tuner fish:

"if you clap loud enough, you just might make the record!"
Avatar 1:26am tuner fish:

They are FEELIN' IT in Evanston!
  1:29am MONEYBAG$:

Probably why Steve Albini moved there
Avatar 1:30am Ari M.:

Hot as a pistol but cool inside
  1:30am bbb:

I'm sure the Dead afficionados already know this, but I was just reading about "He's Gone" and found out it was initially written about Mickey Hart's father Lenny who managed their money and took off with $155,000. Lenny disappeared and was found a year later as a preacher! That's why Mickey Hart left the band in '71. Woah...deep.
Avatar 1:31am Jeff Conklin:

Yeah, that's one of the big holes in the documentary. Totally changed the band. Great doc though!
  1:32am bbb:

I still need to see it!
  1:34am MONEYBAG$:

If you really want to know about stuff like that, you are better off reading one of many books than watching that doc
  1:35am bbb:

Yeah, but it's great to watch old footage.
Avatar 1:37am Jeff Conklin:

Ok, re: Morning/Love. Seems Jay Donnelan had a lot of different names. He shreds hard on Four Sail: www.discogs.com...
  1:42am miketp:

I haven't heard a lot of grateful dead in my life but there's kboo radio 90.7fm Saturday morning that brings dead live shows back to life.if you want another dead outlet!!
Avatar 1:43am Jeff Conklin:

right on, miketp. thanks.
  1:50am Mike tp:

your welcome Jeff.and I enjoy your show very much..and the film the shape of water was pretty special.the sound the sets really stood out!
  1:51am Konstantinov:

man, normally I kinda hate Truckin' ... but that one was great!
  1:51am blythest:

hey jeff! this live version of 'night comes in' rules. first heard 'guitar, vocal' on your show and now listen to it all the time—thanks! :)
Avatar 1:54am Jeff Conklin:

@blythest: My two missions in life: get people to listen to the Dead and Richard/Linda ;)
  1:56am bbb:

@Mike tp, I've been debating seeing The Shape of Water in the theater versus waiting until it's out on Netflix. Is it worth the money to see it now?
Avatar 1:58am Jeff Conklin:

Have't heard of this film
  2:01am bbb:

It's directed by Guillermo del Toro, whose previous films I wasn't that into. But the trailer for The Shape of Water looks great and it's already been nominated for a bunch of awards.
  2:04am BEAVO:

They did that great Spanish jam at Watkins Glen as well on me so many roads box set
Avatar 2:05am Jeff Conklin:

Ah yes a director I've had little to no interest in personally.
  2:12am rw:

Gotta check out now. School night. Thanks once again Mr Conklin! Hope you and MONEYBAG$ feel better soon. Night all! Have a good week!
  2:18am BEAVO:

Guillermo del Caca Del Toro
Avatar 2:18am Linda Lee:

Estribou piece is just perfect after this past week. Just perfect. Thanks Jeff!
Avatar 2:21am Jeff Conklin:

Quite welcome
Avatar 2:26am Linda Lee:

Should've tuned in earlier! But this is where I came in. :-)
Avatar 2:32am Linda Lee:

No heat/freezing indoors, tire blowout, dying cat (who didn't), snowfall spin-outs, stress at work (bad logistics), then the car transmission fails & the car's abandoned. Yep, calm is good. Mellow is very good. Many thanks again! :-)
Avatar 2:35am BEAVO:

The only Del Toro movie I’ve seen is CHronos, I forgot I had seen it and rented it again within a year! You know the one with The insect in the mechanical thing That attaches itself to your hand
Avatar 2:40am BEAVO:

I feel for you
Linda Lee.
Avatar 2:42am Jeff Conklin:

Sorry to hear about your troubles, Linda. Hope the music can soothe/calm for a little while. Tackle one thing at a time. One step...
Avatar 2:42am Linda Lee:

thanks Guys. nothing like the right music to smooth the way!
Avatar 2:45am Linda Lee:

btw the house i just vacated has within it a large paper shopping bag (town dump rescue) overflowing with Dead show cassettes from the 60s - 80s. so busy vacating the house on half a leg i haven't rescued it yet. i wonder: how to share with folks who might be interested?
Avatar 2:47am Jeff Conklin:

Avatar 2:47am Linda Lee:

Avatar 2:49am Jeff Conklin:

I'd be interested Linda. I'm in the Catskills often...
