Ridgewood Radio features concert recordings by adventurous bands and experimental musicians and restored archival tapes from private and institutional collections captured at venues large and small across the five boroughs of New York. It is produced by David Weinstein and Outpost Artists Resources operating out of the Ridgewood section of Queens, NY, where you'll find more yellow bricks than on the road to Oz and the cemetery of your choice is never more than a few blocks from home.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Stanley:

Hi David. I that do certainly.
Avatar 3:08pm david w:

Welcome back, Sem. Settle in for some pickin' today!
Avatar 3:13pm northguineahills:

I'm stealing that steveo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm steveo:

s'okay I stole it too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm steveo:

Enjoying Zeke Healy; Tipper Gore says she's okay with him, too.
Avatar 3:24pm david w:

Yeah but she didn't see the album cover art
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm steveo:

beard too unkempt?
Avatar 3:34pm david w:

A good laugh there, steveo (had to run a quick errand so slow on the uptake)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm steveo:

ok whew :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm doctorjazz:

Delta comes to Queens.
Avatar 3:41pm northguineahills:

We have Henry Flynt and Eugene Chadbourne amongst many others to thank for pioneering that field....
Avatar 3:42pm david w:

Can I get an amen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm listener james from westwood:

Hell yes!
Avatar 3:51pm northguineahills:

Amelia Island is in Nassau County (a good 15mils/25km from Jax city limits), the county north of Duval (Jax), the most NE county in FL. I've spent many a fine time there. The northern portion has a rural/small town feel, which seems miles away from the suburban hell that is the Jacksonville metropolis.
Avatar 3:54pm david w:

I'm sending Ruth there. She's had three vacations canceled or interrupted in the last year, and she only wanted one!
Avatar 3:55pm geezerette:

Beautiful. (Anna RG)
Howdy, David, Ruth, and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm steveo:

heading to Tennessee this weekend; i wonder if there's any live music in my dad's tiny town
Avatar 3:57pm northguineahills:

Thanks for sharing these David. I've found decent improv/experimental/noise artists touring down here, but avant americana is hard to find.... (I'd have told my wife to hit this one if I knew of it advance).
Avatar 3:57pm david w:

Hey gzette! Agreed. Anna RG blew my mind, but the whole evening of 21 Dec knocked me over.
Avatar 4:00pm david w:

@steveo, tell us what you find. there has to be some local action right? when you are in the middle of it, even the bad local bar band can be a revelation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm steveo:

yeah, checking in with my with-it aunt; there is at least one small music bar in town...
Avatar 4:02pm david w:

@ngh: is avant americana a thing? stretching these styles is not unusual tho there is always that limit that makes the orthodox cringe. i so love crossing that limit...
Avatar 4:03pm northguineahills:

When Ruth goes there, tell here to also go the Cumberland Island National Seashore, the next barrier island north of Amelia in Georgia. It used to be a Carnegie vacation plantation but the mansion burned down in the 50s and they donated to the national park service. So, it's all abandoned, there are wild horses, and the ruins of the Carnegie mansion and older buildings still dot the island. Plus, I believe they only allow 75 people on the island per day, and you can only make it by ferry. It's a favorite nature haunt of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm steveo:

her brother was a great old time banjo player, but alas, he's no longer with us
Avatar 4:05pm northguineahills:

@david: I believe henry flynt and in some examples, jim o'rourke have demonstrated that it does. Others may bristle at the label.
Avatar 4:07pm david w:

Thanks! I'm putting the NGH travelogue in my great tips folder to be acted upon without prejudice.
Avatar 4:08pm david w:

Why did Henry Flynt cancel his gig at Experimental Intermedia last month? Anybody know?
Avatar 4:09pm northguineahills:

(the rooom mate I moved to NYC w/ grew up on Amelia Island).
Avatar 4:14pm geezerette:

Caught the word Cumberland and remembered there's an American Music Festival there in Summer. Would love to go there; old style mostly but experimenters might show up, don't know.
Avatar 4:22pm geezerette:

With a very small tweek, this sounds like Don Van Vliet!
Avatar 4:25pm david w:

Maybe he'll move into a trailer and start a band!
Avatar 4:27pm geezerette:

Makes me realize Van Vlliet must have had a vast knowledge of both the Harry Smith and Lomax collections.
Avatar 4:28pm geezerette:

...Hope that trailer will be an Airstream. :)
Avatar 4:33pm david w:

Authenticity. Just saying'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Webhamster Henry:

I haven't been ignoring you, I've been listening! Interesting sets you have here! Also: Nice 'n fresh performances.
Avatar 4:34pm geezerette:

Of course, this is also a little like buying wine for a freeway underpass camper and hanging out with him for a couple of hours.
Not making a joke. I listened to a number of them outside of my studio for years. Not for hours though, just minutes, usually.
Avatar 4:36pm david w:

I hear that. It can mean a lot. On both sides.
Avatar 4:38pm geezerette:

Exactly. Learned a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm steveo:

this is lovely; thanks for the show today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm doctorjazz:

Sounds like he's referencing Albert Ayler.
Avatar 4:44pm david w:

Albert Ayler yes. And then off into Ribot world...
Avatar 4:45pm david w:

When stereo steveo is happy, I am happy!
Avatar 4:47pm geezerette:

Yep, wonderful show! Thanks!
Also love that illustration.
Avatar 4:49pm david w:

Thanks, geez. I appreciate the compliment from a viz person!

I'm going to let the surf wash in Kenzo.
Avatar 4:56pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

4:57pm Dave from VT in NL:

Thanks so much for these wonderful sets.
Avatar 4:57pm david w:

Dave, my pleasure.
Avatar 4:57pm david w:

Kenzo, roll up your cuffs.
Avatar 4:57pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This week: Brand new collage!

Exploring music of my childhood, my father's favorite symphony, recent dance hits, inspirational word bits, and trying to read relevant nutritional lists without losing my composure... With dozens of sound sources blended during the performance through a continuously active improvisational layering process I've apparently cultivated into my core over the last 23.9 years... It's all an experiment in absurdity-beauty.

Come on over and say something new! wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Ridgewoodians!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Stanley:
