Yes indeed!

Congrats, Franny, that also means you have to donate the maximum amount of money at Marathon time. So thank you

Hey, all. East coast represent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09am chris_in_space:

Canada here. Diggin' the Elkhorn.
  12:09am ohbears:

MAX_CALI; shite, cheers to this elkhorn. Jeff were you at this show?
  12:10am Jeff Conklin:

I’ve been told “Cali” is not the preffered nomenclature
  12:12am ohbears:

Whoever told you that doesn't know what nomenclature means ;p
Avatar 12:12am franny:

It's actually just what people say when they don't want to sound tired they have to get up at 4 am. To afford the price of "Cali".
Avatar 12:12am Jeff Conklin:

I was at the gig.. I "DJd" and by "DJ'd" I mean I played live Dead jams off my laptop
  12:13am ohbears:

the lack of apostrophe the second go round threw me for a loop there
  12:13am zenkoan:

When a DJ plays Dead jams, do people start twirling?
  12:14am ohbears:

or vis versace, whatever, I'm tired and Cali is awesome.
Avatar 12:14am Jeff Conklin:

When I play Dead someone hangs around trying to guess the date. And they never do.
  12:16am ohbears:

if you did phish I would totally guess that
  12:17am zenkoan:

That reminds me, Jeff--I've been meaning to ask: how did someone of your relatively tender age first develop an appreciation for the Dead that grew into the degree of expertise you now have? If you don 't mind my asking. : )
Avatar 12:22am Jeff Conklin:

Hmm, well I'm getting dangerously close to 40 but thanks for assuming I'm tender ;). I loved 'Touch of Grey' when I was kid. In middle school found my dad's records and he set up a stereo for me in the basement and I listened to Skull & Roses a lot. Couple years later at lacrosse camp the cool older guys had Dead stickers on their helmets and asked my dad what Dead album was good, he took me to the record store and I bought American Beauty on tape. That summer I also discovered marijuana and Black Sabbath and soon thereafter a friend lent me Live/Dead and then some live tapes. Kept trading tapes through college and so on and so forth...
  12:23am Hippie Jesus:

Hello to all! Expecting big things next week on my birthday ; )
Avatar 12:24am blankemon:

Evening, all. Or morning, I guess.
Avatar 12:24am Jeff Conklin:

Hey blank
Avatar 12:25am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

hello, cool set Jeff, and good to hear yr Dead journey too!
  12:25am ohbears:

I swear I'm not doggin' you, Jeff, since we're friends and all, but LACROSSE CAMP?
Avatar 12:26am Jeff Conklin:

@ohbears: No shame. Still hold my school's record for most saves in a game/season :P
Avatar 12:26am blankemon:

Lacrosse camp is not surprising if one grows up on the north shore of nassau county....and in my high school, the lax dudes were among the first deadheads I knew
  12:27am ohbears:

:D :D that's rad
Avatar 12:27am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I was all about protestant bible camp when I was a teen, managed to blow some doje there...lacrosse camp would have been more fun though, imo
Avatar 12:29am blankemon:

I never did play lacrosse, but I did go to summer camp up in the Adirondacks with a whole lotta Deadhead counselors. That was probably my introduction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30am sberger:

Evening all. A dj who just plays live Dead jams would be what I would pick if I was ever going to be Bar Mitvah'd again.
Avatar 12:30am blankemon:

Haha not that anyone asked, just picking up on what Jeff said and relating
  12:30am ohbears:

oh shhhhh what do we got here...
Avatar 12:30am Jeff Conklin:

I mean, I was also the guy on the team getting people into Sonic Youth and the Velvets...
Avatar 12:31am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

hell yeah
Avatar 12:31am franny:

I love listening o this show because I don't get the dead...and I still love this show. I picked up Heron Oblivion from here.
  12:31am KP:

Thanks for that, Jeff
Avatar 12:31am franny:

Sometimes. Sometimes guys...I don't even get Sonic Youth, but good job, Jeff.
  12:32am ohbears:

no one was questioning yr dedication to being kickass :)
digging this wet tuna you've been hypin' though
Avatar 12:33am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

It is funny how quick Sonic Youth for me turned from "ivory tower cool hipster gods" to "people you see at shows if you visit new york"
  12:33am Jeff Conklin:

Franny. I don’t get you. But that’s ok. Glad yr here.
  12:34am zenkoan:

Almost 40 sounds pretty damn tender for such a Dead authority as yourself. Let's just say all the others I've run into--the kind that actually are able to accurately identify the dates of the live shows from a quick listen to the tapes--had more than a touch of grey!
  12:35am ohbears:

There was an age(d) hipster that both Jeff and I knew on the Internet who both had excellent taste in music and thought Sonic Youth was for "aging hipsters" when he was 24 years old(8 years ago?). I think he likes Sonic Youth.
Avatar 12:35am franny:

@Adam EXactly.
Avatar 12:36am Jeff Conklin:

lol bears
Avatar 12:36am franny:

a lot of people don't get the franster. I'm a Garbage time exile. None-time superstar. Sleepy time now. Archive tomorrow. Thanks.
Avatar 12:37am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

ha ha, everyone is cool though....
  12:37am zenkoan:

Speaking of Velvets: requesting more from Live at the Matrix, if the mood should strike. Best live Velvet recording I know of
  12:37am ohbears:

Gourd bless, franny~!
Avatar 12:38am Jeff Conklin:

@zen: Agreed. Not tonight but maybe soon...
  12:39am larkspur:

I'm late on this discussion, but hey Lacrosse camp sounds fun. I was like Adam, only it was Jewish camp instead of Protestant. Lots of pot there, by both counselors and campers. haha
Avatar 12:39am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

hell yes, this synth thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39am sberger:

I've been listening to that Wet Tuna jam all week. Incredible.
  12:40am zenkoan:

Ok. We Zen types are very patient by nature. Plus we love just about everything you present for our listening pleasure on this program.
  12:41am Hippie Jesus:

If Zen can get Velvets, can the rest of us get something Sonic Youth?

unrelated: R.I.P. Z’EV
  12:41am larkspur:

p.s.-Happy Hanukkah to all the Jewsssss out there!
Avatar 12:43am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

yeah, happy Chaunukah! The most holy of the days to the jewish people, ha ha
Avatar 12:43am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

(I know it's actually a minor holiday)
  12:44am larkspur:

haha yeah...it's the only Jewish holiday I celebrate now, actually (and p.p.s.-RIP Z'ev, he was one of the tribe)
Avatar 12:44am blankemon:

This is kinda Youngbloods-y
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45am chris_in_space:

Jeff, if you're "dangerously" close to 40, I'll assume you never got a chance to see the Dead, right?
  12:45am ohbears:

whew! dancin dancin!
Avatar 12:46am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I'm 37, consider it close to 40...
Avatar 12:47am Jeff Conklin:

So I got all my friends into them and found out they were playing MSG (Fall of 1993). My "friend" had his mom "score" us tickets. The night before the show this "friend" calls and says he "had to sell my ticket" to some other kid. I had no idea what the scene was like and that you could just roll up (plus I was 14) so I didn't go. To this day, this "friend" tries to add me on Facebook and I refuse to accept.
Avatar 12:47am Jeff Conklin:

So no I never saw them
Avatar 12:48am blankemon:

That's such dirty pool
Avatar 12:48am Jeff Conklin:

I'll be 39 in a few days. DANGEROUS
Avatar 12:48am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

ha ha
  12:48am ohbears:

dang... ::vybez::
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49am sberger:

All the young'uns here...I'm rolling close to 61, and yes, I saw the Dead. More then a few times.
  12:49am larkspur:

sberger: what was the very first time (do you remember? haha)
Avatar 12:50am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I think the band I've seen most has been Wolf Eyes...
Avatar 12:50am blankemon:

I'm old enough to have seen them, but not as much as I wish I had. I did catch a couple of real humdingers, though.
  12:51am ohbears:

jerry was still crying his eyes out in the latter days, so any show could have been excellent to see, imo
Avatar 12:51am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

MOre than 20 times...it's been fun to see them turn into Deadheads....mostly from new member Crazy Jim who I first met in like 2000 when he was a roadie for them.
  12:52am larkspur:

I never saw them but my best friend in middle school had an older brother who was one of the 1970s tapes who followed them all over the US, so I heard a lot of those tapes.
  12:52am larkspur:

Avatar 12:53am Jeff Conklin:

Well, not to pat myself on the back, but Olson credits me with really getting him into the Dead in his book....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am sberger:

Sure '71 at the Music Hall in Boston. Same age as Jeff was when he didn't make it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am chris_in_space:

@Jeff That's a bummer.
  12:53am larkspur:

That's cool sberger!
Avatar 12:53am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

oh yeah, also I'd credit you with getting me into listening to the Dead at least once a week Jeff!
  12:54am ohbears:

when i become a world famous rapper, i will credit Jeff for that as well, because.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am sberger:

Saw them several times after, but my favorite sorta Dead related story(sorta) is seeing the Dream Syndicate at CB's in '84, walking in just as they were opening their set. With Morning Dew. Freaked me out, and I'm standing there gibbering to the folks I'm with "Hey they're covering the Dead!!! and I'm just getting blank stares, and worse. Later I went back stage and found out that Steve Wynn was/is a big Dead fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57am sberger:

This Country Funk stuff is great, btw
Avatar 12:57am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

ha, that rules @sberger
  12:58am Phil:

This Country Funk stuff is super diverse! Love this power pop jam.
  12:59am ohbears:

Avatar 1:12am blankemon:

I like the sound of Shoot Out The Lights, but the production on First Light is pretty dire
  1:12am ohbears:

100% <3

Avatar 1:12am blankemon:

I love this era of Bird Song so very much
  1:12am KP:

Avatar 1:13am Jeff Conklin:

@blankemon: I'm the opposite, I think Shoot Out the Lights borders on unlistenable. I love First Light A LOT
  1:13am ohbears:

all i know are injokes... might be why my standup fails
Avatar 1:14am blankemon:

Oh, I love his electric guitar sound on SOTL. But also, just a better batch of songs than First Light (which is not without its merits)
  1:14am Allbunny:

Someone say Oakland?
  1:15am ohbears:

  1:17am Jeff Conklin:

  1:17am Allbunny:

Cosmic dj! All hail ye! We commoners of uncommon music tastes do.
Avatar 1:18am blankemon:

Interestingly, Jeff (well, at least to me), the very first time I ever saw Thompson live was a solo acoustic show and he opened with "Don't Let a Thief Steal Into Your Heart"
  1:19am Jeff Conklin:

I’m way more partial to his acoustic side as a solo dude (well after 78)
Avatar 1:20am Jeff Conklin:

Cheers, allbunny
  1:22am Geoff Cronklin:

jerry donkey konging his guitar
Avatar 1:22am Jeff Conklin:

@sberger: Whoa had no idea Wynn was a head! Cool story.
Avatar 1:23am blankemon:

Fall '72 is so good, it's just ridiculous
  1:29am Agent Peter:

was just after mckernan stopped touring for good
  1:31am ohbears:

Avatar 1:32am Jeff Conklin:

Jeffrey from Dire Wolves toured with the Dead for years. He was a taper. Last show was Brent's last fwiw...
  1:35am ohbears:

Avatar 1:38am Jeff Conklin:

@thedavidcrosby: Do you still do acid?
  1:46am Allbunny:

I just met Buddy Cage a couple nights ago, playing with For the Grateful. Should have been more people there, but it was a good show, in Southbridge, MA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am I am the Upsetter:

Great comments tonight. Glad I got to see the Dead many times in the 80's. I don't think their live sound has ever been matched. I would;dn't say I have seen as many shows as some of you here but none of them could match the Dead and their clarity.
Avatar 1:49am Jeff Conklin:

@Allbunny: Is that a GD tribute? He's so great on pedal steel!
  1:53am ohbears:

beautiful set
  1:59am ohbears:

excellent album title indeed
Avatar 2:01am AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04am snowweasel:

Avatar 2:10am Jeff Conklin:

Thanks, snowweasel. Glad to have this outlet and happy to keep people company for a few hours
  2:12am ohbears:

same, gotta catch some z's but great show tonight, thanks Jeff, see ya on xmas as well!
  2:13am Jeff Conklin:

Night, bears. Sleep well
  2:20am Allbunny:

@Jeff Conklin
Yes, he was great and yes they're a GD tribute band. They have mad connections to the original but I'm sure nothing comes close to the real thing.
Avatar 2:25am Jeff Conklin:

Surprised attendance was low, seems like GD cover bands are the only shows that get people out these days
  2:31am J:

Brutal holiday season over here this year. Barely scraping by. Happy to hear you'll be on the air
Avatar 2:34am Jeff Conklin:

Hang in there, J
  2:35am Allbunny:

Yeah, everyone was surprised. We were thinking it was due to poor weather and life being difficult.
  2:38am Allbunny:

Brutal here, too
  2:38am Allbunny:

You are not alone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55am Steve B.:

Good words, Jeff. Be strong, cherish family and friends and your memories of loved ones who have passed on. You are correct, we are *not* alone and music can be a great comfort.
  2:56am Allbunny:

Thanks, Jeff!
Avatar 2:56am Jeff Conklin:

Thanks, Steve.

My best to all of you. Find something good in life. It's there, however obscured.
