Howdy, Mark and all! That combo on the playlist anticipates the treadmill desk by decades!
Avatar 6:03pm TehBadDr:

Love me some blips and bleeps, you should do a full on music program!

Good evening, Mark and Techto sapiens!

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm ultradamno:

Hello technocrats. I so the facial recognition aspect of Apple X something one can opt not to do?
  6:14pm Listener Robert:

Lots of things people these days call "conspiracy theories" don't even involve conspiracies. Jesse Walker's written a lot about the abuse of the term.
  6:15pm melinda:

@Robert good point. The term gets thrown around a lot.

know a guy was on USS Maddox when she was "attacked", he says damn sure it was faked.

Just wanted to chime in and say how much I enjoy your show. Thanks for always bringing us these fantastic, thought-provoking interviews.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Mark Hurst:

Hi all! And thanks so much, Sheila! Mutual admiration here - I love Sophisticated Boom Boom.

Have you folks seen world on a wire parts 1&2 by Rainer fassbinder?
  6:29pm debt collector:

It’s on filmstruck and it’s about a corporation hat has built a computer model of the future and it’s replicants are hard to detect from its progenitors
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm northguineahills:

Gotta look for that, debt collector.
  6:35pm Dean:

Luddites. That's how I want to be known. It's not a bad thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm northguineahills:

@Dean, I didn't know you were in the UK in 1812-1816 and knew Ned Ludd ;)

Thanks Mark, actually leaving work and a sane hour. Cheers, and thanks for the good work!

BBC world service just had a program about the 170 million cameras in China. The reporter got his face scanned then started walking around a city, took 7 minutes for the cameras to ID him.

A few friends of mine couldn't wait to submit their DNA to ancestry. They think it's the best thing ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Tommy in Neversink:

Seems appropriate that FACEbook would scan your face
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Smokestack:

Yeah, I dumped Facebook five years ago. Never looked back
  6:50pm Gnat:

Say you were a multi millionaire and wanted to start up some kind of initiative to combat the big data creepiness and fighting against its impending normalization in state services etc. What can be done to help???
  6:51pm Marie:

So happy to be off FB. Hated it. the idea of looking at a co.s track record seems like common sense to me. Look around. Why should you trust any corps?
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:51pm melinda:

I submitted my DNA to 23andme in hopes of getting some information that might help me with chronic illness, but I wouldn't have done it solely for ancestry info.

Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:52pm TedfromOakland:

to read about the Luddites: 'The Making of the English Working Class' by E.P. Thompson. Definitive work of the history of the period.
Avatar 6:52pm YesthatMattHall:

Not to freak everyone out, but here's an off-the-shelf, totally-possible-right-now use of face-recognition tech and drones for targeted assassination.
  6:53pm Dean:

Absolutely, @TedfromOakland. For a more brief account, Kevin Robins & Frank Webster, Times of the Technoculture.

The modern state is designed to become the ideal form of government to protect the rights of the individual. When those rights are not protected any longer, the institutions of the state Are most definately Conspiring against the individual freedom they are entrusted to guarantee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Fuzzy:

If you go to the airport to catch your flight, they'll scan your face -- it's only a couple of airports now, but you know that eventually it will be the norm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm ultradamno:

Seems like a gift to law enforcement. Instead of having to try and compel a password out of Apple they just hold your head still.

@ultradamno that is precisely why i only have a passcode. as long as it isn’t mandatory to set these features up, there’s no way that i will use them

  6:59pm fredfromfrance:

@gnat : since the states are having more and more difficulties to govern and companies power are increasing in governing potential, the gathering of both since more than credible. If i had money, i would help philosophers and artists that are engaged in new ways of thinking that can pervert the use of technologies and act as some kind of popular lobby, a natural lobby like could have been underground music scenes or things like that.

Glenn Greenwald's perennial lament: that people roll over and take it because "I have nothing to hide," never considering that might have plenty to secure and protect.
