  6:32pm Listener Robert:

Can anyone here think of some other self-referential pieces of music like "Tennessee Waltz"?

Hey all

Great set.

You go, Samantha

Avatar 6:37pm Mikula:

@listenerrobert: "The Internationale" unites the human race. It used to be the organization but these days when people sing it they usually mean the song.
  6:38pm Ricky:

Hand & Leg :)
  6:53pm Cooh John:

@ Listener Robert: How about The Twist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Ike:

Hi folks! Sounds great. I just flew back from Peru, and boy, are my arms tired!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm coelacanth∅:

well that's a pickle
  7:00pm Listener Robert:

But Twist could refer to the dance, Internationale also has that external reference. I meant ones that are purely referential. I know there are others like Tenn. Waltz, but I just can't think of them now.

Robert: George Harrison's "This Song?"
Avatar 7:28pm βrian:

They still have shared dorms? I thought it was all about customized meal plans and rooftop swimming pools. Ach, I hope I'm wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm coelacanth∅:

nice! one of my top 20 favorite versions!
  7:36pm andrew:

  7:43pm Listener Robert:

Interesting, I hadn't considered titles like "This Song" (nothing Bright about it). Still, that one's just referring to itself generically. If it had a non-generic name, that'd be what I'm looking for.

I guess most of them are like "The Twist", referring to a hitherto-nonexistent dance. So they're not as paradoxic as "Tenn. Waltz", which according to its lyrics must predate itself. But it must've been an instrumental version referred to by that piece, because if it were being sung at the time in question, that'd've appeared mighty fishy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm coelacanth∅:

"your song"
Swag For Life Member 7:51pm 12539:

Yes, I think you want something more paradoxical than just self referential.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for the toony tunes, Samantha. Have a good week.
