I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

I'm so thankful for WFMU and everyone who makes it happen this evening. It's the best conduit I know of for bringing music which is challenging, fascinating and beautiful (and every ratio mix of the three) into my life. Never in the world of commercial and rating-chasing radio would any of this music be given the time of day.

@Wild Neil: I only became a listener once the tinny stream came out in '98 and my new job had the bandwidth to handle it. Before, I'd only read about WFMU.

I'm quite new to WFMU. I discovered back in April because it's namedropped in a song called Cult Boyfriend by Jeffrey Lewis. I've yet to watch Meet the Feebles...
Avatar 2:08pm northguineahills:

Jeffrey Lewis is a lot of fun!
Avatar 2:10pm Wild Neil:

@Layet-can you describe the sculpture you are working on? Subject, material, method of joining, etc? Maybe post a photo or link?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Doobois:

"Cult Boyfriend" is yet another great, hilarious tune from the mighty Lewis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm steveo:

Cool. I found Cult Boyfriend here (which I will listen to later) www.wfmu.org...
  2:18pm River:

I'm sure I'm far from the only person who discovered WFMU because of that song. Being an international listener of the station feels like a special privilege because so few people in the UK are aware of it, so I get to feel like one of the coolest people I know whenever I can introduce someone new to this beautiful, joyous and unlikely madness. B-)
  2:20pm rw:

River, get yourself a t-shirt or two. The guy at the bakery asked me about mine today. The only problem is figuring out how to describe the station when people do ask!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Bryce:

wow, river, so nice to have you around!

Yes, and eat of this pomegranate ...
Avatar 2:22pm northguineahills:

Actually, not many people down here in FL have heard of WFMU. When I wear the tee-shirts, I get asked 'what is that?', a lot, even among many in the creative arts community,
Avatar 2:23pm Chris from DC:

Nice to see this Khan Jamal reissued.

Stories of how we found WFMU. I was in a squat on the lower east side in the freezing winter of 1988 scanning the dial on a battery operated boombox, when I came across Bronwyn C reading a story about a dog. Hooked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm melinda:

When I'm asked to describe WFMU I say "it's freeform". I don't know if that means anything to them or not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm crateslinger:

It wasn't really coming in very welll - it still doesn't - but something about her voice and the subject matter told me this wasn't my father's college radio station.
  2:36pm River:

Definitely happy to drink the zombie cult enslaving liquid. :p As much as people laud the BBC and the public service broadcasting culture we have in Europe, there's still nothing as bold and free as WFMU. I feel like Americans do 'weird' much better than Brits. In the US if people want something they find a way to make it happen. Here if we want something and it's not readily available we just complain. Huge generalisation but some truth in it I think.
Avatar 2:37pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Sometime in the 1990s ('97? '98?) There was a short list of "radio WEB-casts" circulating, by some dude at MIT. Obscure stations in faraway lands, and WFMU. First show was T.Coulter, hooked immediately. Every workday, all day, headphones on.
Avatar 2:38pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

There's also some weird overlap in my brain, between the "Lowest Common Denominator" station guide and the Archie McPhee toy catalog. Did McPhee stock FMU swag or something?
Avatar 2:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

False Memory Syndrome is real.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Davis:

Reverand. Tony Coulter was the 1st show i listened to too tutu. I DIDNT EVEN LIKE COMPUTERS. but i was glad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm steveo:

lately a lot of people I mention WFMU to confuse it with WFUV; i used to think wfmu was weird but now I just think it's good; i guess this is what happens over time; i love tony coulter and abdullah ibrahim too.
Avatar 2:42pm βrian:

Such sweet pain, this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm crateslinger:

WFUV and WNYC are the same broadcast for large portions of the day now. Just one more example of limited choices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm steveo:

[misread, withdrawn] nods
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm crateslinger:

Sorry - not WNYC - WNYU. Fordham and NYU share a morning show or something like that. Great place to hear Courtney Barnett and Alvarius B!
  2:45pm rw:

I was just thinking about this last night during Nick Name's show. I believe I first heard of FMU through R.Stevie Moore cassettes in the mid '80s. Wasn't able to listen until much more recently, around the time of Hurricane Sandy. It was pretty interesting to experience the hurricane through the WFMU filter, starting with jokes about having to read the weather warnings, into whether the DJ's were going to be able to make it home after their shifts and ultimately into broadcasting (web only) from home and having no information about the world outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm melinda:

I started listening online in 2010 after a local acquaintance from NJ was raving about WFMU on facebook. I didn't take to it immediately, but tried again on Saturday morning during Bob Brainen's show and it became a habit. When I figured out that FMU was the station where Yo la Tengo did the fundraising gigs that made me even more interested. And then I learned that Irwin was behind the Langley Schools Music Project! so many connections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm steveo:

this piece is improvised, right? so creative.
  2:47pm dead_mic:

WFMU connection... mid/late 90s, I was on a listserv discussion group which had Irwin, Citizen Kafka (and maybe other DJs as well) on board. Listened through the RealAudio stream that made everything sound as if it were filtered through an aquarium pump, on the occasions that the bits would flow fast enough through my dial-up. Mostly of the time: "BUFFERING".
Avatar 2:48pm Wild Neil:

My friend who turned me onto FMU supposedly his brother did the accu-playlist for fmu....he built it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm chris:

love Brainen! his was one of the first shows I branched out with, after Irwin, back in the late 90's, iirc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Mick:

Fun catching up on the chat during today's amazeballs show. River, welcome to the zombie cult - you are my new hero! WFMU came into my life in the 90s, but the signal was sufficiently weak that I didn't become addicted until the streaming era. As for the T-shirts, I'm pretty sure my 'Eat Flaming Death' shirt gets more comments than anything else I own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm fleep:

My gateway was Dave Emory. I was a listener on KPFK, but the archive was here, and I think Squirrel Carcass was the next step into this wonderland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm BLCKDGRD:

This Cherry/Bra is the best cover of Gilligan's Island theme ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm chris:

me too, Mick. wore that thing to rags, i did. now its the malevolent bunny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm melinda:

People love the bunny shirt.
Avatar 2:52pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

First FMU shirt = choking on cufflinks. Still have it, ragged as hell but still breathing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Mick:

I do miss the shirt with the people dancing - that got lost somewhere along the way...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Fuzzy:

Earliest email I can find in my Gmailbox that mentions WFMU is from February 2005 -- I don't remember exactly how I discovered WFMU, either an active search for streamable radio or a coincidental find on the web while surfing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Carmichael:

I found FMU online in the 90s. I was working at UC Davis, right across the hall from the campus station KDVS. Although I didn't know it, Liz Berg was a dj there.

I listened all day to FMU and didn't recognize a single song. I've listened ever since, and my batting average is still pretty bush league.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm crateslinger:

My oldest FMU shirt is either the old codger, or the guy drinking from the XXX jug. Not my first, but my oldest extant.
Avatar 2:54pm Wild Neil:

This is cool Jazz! I mean Jazz that's actually good like in a Dirty Harry movie.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm rsj:

dave emory, that's awesome, thanks for listening
trouble was my gateway but like it all now. telling my poor kid that pop is simple and makes the world seem dirty in a bad way by comparison, wfmu the opposite, my poor kids...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Fuzzy:

I think I was listening when I lived in Alaska 2001-2004.
Avatar 2:55pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

want lentils now.
Avatar 2:56pm Wild Neil:

I remember in the 90's they had a call-in improv show....I called in and gave them the topic "3 pound hammers" because they were impracticably heavy at work.....
Avatar 2:56pm Chris from DC:

This is great. That Three:four label had a very good year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm crateslinger:

Dirty Harry Jazz - I think that was the name of a bin in the record store I used to work at.
  2:56pm rw:

rsj, WFMU is good for your kids; like eating vegetables.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Carmichael:

Who was the DJ who rode out Sandy, staying in the building and broadcasting? Pat Byrne, perhaps? It was a crazy stunt.
Avatar 2:57pm Wild Neil:

I play FMU for my kids sometimes!
Avatar 2:57pm βrian:

Different vegetables for different shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm crateslinger:

There used to be a kid's show, Greasy Kid's Stuff on Saturday mornings. They wished my daughter happy birthday when she was three and she lost her shit.
Avatar 2:58pm Wild Neil:

I think Clint Eastwood movies have really good Jazz....and also that really trippy jazz song from Taxi Driver? What is that called??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm crateslinger:

Steaming Street Jazz I believe.
Avatar 2:59pm Wild Neil:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm queems:

i only started listening regularly 6 months ago when i moved back to new jersey. there was a radio in my kitchen and i was feeling really isolated after leaving the city, so i left the radio on all the time. dialed to wfmu and it has been on 24 hours a day ever since.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm chris:

every once in a while, i see my boy enjoying what he's hearing on fmu, but since he's a teen, he won't admit it.
