"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

I remember seeing the video for "Wonderin'" all the time on HBO's "Video Jukebox" back in the 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am steveo:

Everybody's Rockin' is the thirteenth studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young, released on August 1, 1983. The album was recorded with the Shocking Pinks and features a selection of rockabilly songs (both covers and original material)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am melinda:

This was my intro to Neil Young.@PKNY yes, Video Jukebox! I saw those before we had MTV, and for a while I would refer to videos as 'video jukeboxes'.

Avatar 10:02am PKNY:

@melinda - the stuff they used to play on Video Jukebox was pretty eclectic, maybe because there weren't that many videos! First place I ever saw/heard the Clash, Peter Tosh, Tom Tom Club, etc.

  10:21am Beavo:

They call that a project?
  10:23am Beavo:

Daryl Hall already had several hits They didn’t release it because it was too weird
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Planet Tyler:

@Bronwyn - LOL, of course he did!
Avatar 10:24am John Allen:

when it was recorded Hall & Oates were still proving themselves. the promise of teh 80s is what gave this record a life.
Avatar 10:25am βrian:

My, what a pleasant surprise!
Avatar 10:44am Wild Neil:

I think Daryl Hall did an album with Robert Fripp?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am crateslinger:

mmm... feelin' this one...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am crateslinger:

Wasn't the Blue Nile like a cool alternative band? Cuz this is straight up yo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am crateslinger:

Almost like Springsteen.
Avatar 10:58am Wild Neil:

@Steveo-like i said earlier, there is NO mention of Blues Traveller in the WFMU band browser that I could find. Hence NEVER played on WFMU at least as long as those records were kept.
Avatar 10:59am Polyus:

heh heh who's slurring their words NOW?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am crateslinger:

This guy was in the punk band Jodie Foster's Army back in the early 80's. Free drinks for life.
  11:02am rw:

Dude, you ARE pushing this AB record. Luckily I've been enjoying it all so far! Listening from the burning shores of CA. Okay here (for the time being anyway). Thanks, man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am melinda:

I'm enjoying the AB too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am crateslinger:

@ rw - multiple dj's pushing this, and the courtney barnett/kurt vile thing.
Avatar 11:04am βrian:

@rw: Stay hydrated!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am steveo:

one day i listened to this like 6 times so 2 ain't nothin

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Ken From Hyde Park:

  11:20am Dave in a cave:

what is the fascination with alvarius b on WFMU? Is there some sort of dj contest to see who can play it the most?
  11:20am Agent Peter:

@crateslinger - you is correct

(although I like AB, I can find it on my own if I need to)
  11:23am rw:

crateslinger, I've only been listening for a few years now but I also notice the shift. It's been pushing me more toward the Drummer Stream.
Avatar 11:24am John Allen:

alvarius B has outlasted most of our listeners here at wfmu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am steveo:

"Freeform Radio: An approach to radio programming in which a station's management gives the DJ complete control over program content."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am freste:

haw - heard that, you are eeevil. A new Manchurian trigger
  11:27am zib:

long live al b, guys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am crateslinger:

That intro bit is actually from Deep Purple "Sweet Child in Time"
  11:33am blee:

Great show today, rocking my pjs.
Avatar 11:34am John Allen:

oh wow, you guys talking about shifts in your perception?
Avatar 11:35am βrian:

Crisp hand-clapping there!
  11:35am Agent Peter:

there's a difference between the real and the vividly imagined?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am crateslinger:

I spoke too soon. Upon re listening to Sweet Child in Time, the AB intro is not exactly derivative, but dang it's got that sound. I wonder if he did it on purpose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am crateslinger:

Great song - Sweet Child. Especially on the live in Japan album. Best heavy metal screaming ever. Worth playing the two songs next to each other for comparison. Oh no, now I've done it...
  11:44am rw:

JA, I've been wondering that myself, but I feel like it may be more than just my perception. You don't notice it? It's tough to say for sure because of the amorphous nature of freeform, but do we really need a blues hour? Even Matt Fiveash seems to be apologetic about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am steveo:

I, for one, do not believe that station management is telling DJs what to play. I've heard DJs, in the past (like, 17 or 18 years ago), play the same record over and over for an hour straight. I don't think anyone told them to do that, either. If there's one song that a lot of people like to play (and really, John's the only one still playing Zion) it's probably because they all happen to like it / or hate it / or want to punish us all, or whatever, as individual DJs. Now I'm sorry for blabbing so much; I'm gonna sit still and listen.
Avatar 11:45am βrian:

@steveo: Ah, but maybe Ken is telling them NOT to play certain songs! And so they play them!
Avatar 11:48am John Allen:

are you people out of your minds? This is boar (bored) material stuff. I can assure you the only one telling me to play Alvarius B is Alan Bishop. And I happen to pee often.
Avatar 11:50am Wild Neil:

I remember back in the 90's hearing Velvet Crush Teenage Symphonies for God by different DJ's all the time. It happens without management is my opinion based on no facts other than that one.
  11:51am rw:

And I don't want to seem like I'm complaining. WFMU is one of the best things on the planet. As far as Alan Bishop and this particular show are concerned, I'm into it. Keep on doing what you do! This show kicks ass.
Avatar 11:51am Wild Neil:

At least song repetition on WFMU is NOT LIKE my local classic rock station.
Avatar 11:54am JakeGould:

Patterns of similar behavior do not mean behavior is dictated by some create puppet-master.
Avatar 11:55am Wild Neil:

I imagine DJ's talk to each other about what new music they like. Like 75 dollar bill, Dirty Beaches, et al...
Avatar 11:57am JakeGould:

I meant “…great puppet-master.”

Also, the DJs are constantly talking about Bitcoin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am listener Rey:

There was one week a couple months ago when I heard the same Rihanna song on 3 different shows. I think it was just a billboard-related coincidence. Or possibly payola
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am steveo:

thanks JA, lots of great music today; how many eyes do you have, though?
  11:59am rw:

Thanks JA! Excellent show as always!
Avatar 12:00pm John Allen:

i'm not saying payola isn't possible, but it's not very profitable here. hey if someone can start paying my $15 back into the city each week I'll give your next record plenty of love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm crateslinger:

I wasn't suggesting collusion.
