After the way Mark's show ended, I was mashing up Tiny Dancer with Yat-Kha in my head.

I was pondering the other day ... if a person inhales helium or something to alter the voice, is that still vocal fry, or is that just a gimmick?
Avatar Mon. 11/27/17 7:27pm Dan Bodah:

@Ken, good question. Probably yes, it would fit in the show if it's a technique incorporated into a style of singing that tries to explore the possibilities of the human voice. But maybe less so if done as a one-off novelty joke. Dunno, I'd have to hear and evaluate as I do f0or electronic manipulation of the human voice. Try me at danbodah at gmail if you like.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 11/27/17 7:30pm Linda Lee:

Love the little kecak incorporated into this song along with all the other vocal techniques

Heh, no, I'm not into helium. I saw a balloon last week and remembered people making their voices sound funny. I've been working on overtones when I'm driving around, though.

Digging that Buffy Sainte-Marie & Tanya Tagaq
  Mon. 11/27/17 7:57pm Matthew Hall:

Two things, not sure you covered them. Back and forth at the radio tonight, cooking dinner. But:
1) Umm Kulthum is mentioned with great admiration in Bob Dylan's autobiography.
2) My parents always insisted that Yma Sumac was really Amy Camus from Westchester, NY. The Inca Princess act was fake, but the seven-octave voice was real.
I actually saw Yma Sumac in a production of Sondheim's 'Follies' in Los Angeles. She was ancient. She was helped onstage by a young man in a tux, sang her song, killed it, was helped offstage, and then came back for the end of show applause. Which was huge, in her honor.

Matthew Hall just reminded me! Aaaages ago I won tickets from KALX to see Yma Sumac in San Francisco. I couldn't get anyone to go with me so I went by myself and I don't remember anything else about the show :)
