"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Howdy, John and crew.

I never got a chance to hear this show when it was on before January. I have to say I was thrown off by the intro, but now it's an integral part of my Friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 9:10am steveo:

hi! oh good, we're still waking up.
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:10am John Allen:

morning george. hey everyone!
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:11am Wild Neil:

PEACE all. This neil rolnick is weird. It is "noise"?
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:13am Wild Neil:

Ok. There's this:en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 9:14am steveo:

YouTube says it's "Classical".
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:15am Wild Neil:

I am at work and there is literally nothing to do. Suggestions?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 9:15am NotARealDoctor:

I'll never forget the shock of iTunes telling me Peter, Paul, and Mary was "Rock n' Roll"
  Fri. 11/17/17 9:15am queems:

i always have to skip the intro because it gives me anxiety
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:16am Wild Neil:

My 14 year old suffers from anxiety. What helps? Avoiding bad things? Facing your fears?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 9:16am NotARealDoctor:

@Wild Neil, have you considered putting together a Lego kit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 9:16am steveo:

meditation
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 9:16am NotARealDoctor:

I have several of them at my desk that I take apart and put back together on slow days.
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:17am Wild Neil:

@not a real doctor-every time I get my 7 year old one, I end up doing it, with one exception when I got him a simple one he was able to do about 90% of it and got only one thing wrong. Legos are awesome. I got my 7 year old a 1400 piece giant set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 9:18am Ken From Hyde Park:

Maybe word games or Sudoku puzzles? Verbal reassurances may help, too.
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:18am Wild Neil:

Alice Shields is surprisingly listenable.
  Fri. 11/17/17 9:18am queems:

@wild neil therapy is helpful for me, but it depends on what the triggers are
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:21am Wild Neil:

I am in a 64 degree room wearing blue coveralls and a hat. This saves on the gas bill I am told. I offered to take on handyman projects (at which I kinda suck because I am a perfectionist) so I solicited information from an advertising department at at journal related to our field. What else can I do like THAT that can be accomplished with a computer?
@queems-what is the best single tool you have been given to combat your anxiety? Do you take meds? Not judging, just wondering and no need to answer if you are not comfortable.
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:22am Wild Neil:

Divus is pretty listenable too! Its so odd though...
Avatar    Fri. 11/17/17 9:27am duke:

I'm really liking this set
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:29am Wild Neil:

enrico rava reminds me of King Crimson when they do their abstract thing sorta.
  Fri. 11/17/17 9:29am queems:

@wild neil i used to take zoloft for ocd! it helped, but ultimately the side effects ended up being too much for me, and i never looked for anything to replace it. it took the edge off and really allowed me to take a breath before reacting, which is actually probably the best coping mechanism i learned. it's harder without the medication, but saying something like "this is out of my control and that is ok" helps. i'm not sure what causes your daughter's anxiety, but i think that it is a good tool for anyone to use, because we can only control so much of what happens to us and sometimes we need to remind ourselves of that.
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:29am Wild Neil:

@John Allen-thank you for putting YEAR on recordings.
  Fri. 11/17/17 9:30am Morgan:

good morning, John! I want to thank you for turning me and my husband on to Grant Hart many weeks ago, when we lost him
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:30am Wild Neil:

@queems-thank you for point out my son can say that to himself to buy himself time to respond rather than react. That is something I forgot about!
  Fri. 11/17/17 9:31am Morgan:

hi queems!
Avatar    Fri. 11/17/17 9:31am Chris from DC:

Following up later on that Divus release. Good stuff.
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:31am John Allen:

hey Morgan, great! Now I feel like listening to some Grant Hart....
Avatar    Fri. 11/17/17 9:33am duke:

@Wild Neil I was prescribed lexipro because I was having sleep problems due to anxiety. It didn't help, actually made my anxiety and sleep problems worse. The only thing that helped was changing jobs.
  Fri. 11/17/17 9:34am Morgan:

yeah! we got the Argument immediately and started working our way back. What a treasure. thanks again
Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/17/17 9:34am Bobby Whirlwind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 9:34am steveo:

also really enjoying set
  Fri. 11/17/17 9:35am queems:

@morgan hello!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 9:38am Devin B.:

Morning all. Loving this set as well. Definitely gonna check out that Divus album. As long as we're thanking John for introducing us to stuff, the Mary Margaret O'Hara was a revelation last week. I think I've listened to Miss America a dozen times since then. Thanks!
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 9:44am John Allen:

Devin, she's incredible, but whatever happened to that guitar player. he should teamed up w/ John Martyn or someone...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 9:58am George of Troy:

Fans of MMO'H and cinema buffs in general should check out Jem Cohen's film Museum Hours, in which she stars and also performs a couple of songs. I loved it, personally. Very atmospheric.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:11am Ike:

You're playing long-winded smooth jazz stuff again. I just thought you might want to know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:15am Polyus:

Sailing the seas of smooooth.
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:15am John Allen:

dammit Ike, you need to give me an adequate heads up when I start doing this
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:16am Wild Neil:

It's "funk". To each his own I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:18am steveo:

1979? Are you sure this isn't smooth disco? (Thinking clickystar for native son; still on the fence.)
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:19am John Allen:

WN, I was trying to make a musical connection between what we were hearing and what Ike wanted to hear. This was the only rekkid i had cued up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:19am steveo:

They have me with the guitar, it's the "horns" that scream "sitcom theme song". (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:19am John Allen:

DON'T CLICK!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:20am Devin B.:

@George: Museum Hours sounds good. I'll check it out.
@JA: Yeah - the guitar on that record is incredible. Wikipedia suggests he's kept pretty busy.
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:20am Wild Neil:

@JA-sorry to judge. Your show is pretty awesome. And odd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:20am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:22am Ike:

And here, ladies and gentlemen of the residential program, you'll see an excellent example of Stage 10 Record Collector's Disease, a diagnosis originally formulated by an expert at radio station WFMU. No, no, don't cry, fellows. I know it's terribly sad, but pull yourselves together. This poor subject ran out of things to collect and had to start collecting smooth jazz records due to his compulsion. Yes, yes, truly horrifying. There may also be a bit of Williamsburg Ironic Hipster Disease mixed in. Yes, I also thought this ran its course in 2010, but occasionally recurring outbreaks do happen.
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:23am Wild Neil:

John has a REALLY HARD job spinning new songs each week for 3 hours. NOBODY is perfect. Sometimes I HATE what is played on WFMU which is ok too.
MANHATTAN LOVE SUICIDE IS JUST PLAIN WEIRD!
  Fri. 11/17/17 10:24am queems:

ok now this one isn't smooth jazz
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:24am steveo:

focus on the violin technique, neil
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 11/17/17 10:27am northguineahills:

You can never go wrong w/ Derek Bailey!

overcompensating for the smooth jazz? ;)

(You don'y want to know how many derek bailey recs I have)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:30am crateslinger:

wait a minute... is that christmas music?
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:35am John Allen:

Ike, you message with the urgency of someone stuck in the past which didn't work out the first time
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:38am crateslinger:

Fridays. JA, Bryce, Sheila B. O to be here forever, all else false memories...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:46am ɨkɛ:

Time is circular. All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again. Therefore, being stuck in the past is the same as being stuck in the future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:48am Passaic River Blues:

@Crateslinger: Fridays are really excellent, and you still get Marty on the archives. The JA → Bryce → Sheila B. daytime run is stellar. I just want to tell my job, "Please stop scheduling shit every Friday at 1:00. Y'all can't impinge on Bryce's time!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:49am Polyus:

So where do we stand on the new age resurgence?
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:50am Wild Neil:

John, can you play some David Allen Coe?
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:50am Wild Neil:

Merry Christmas everybody!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:52am crateslinger:

PRB, I'm with you. I want to turn out the lights and put on headphones until 5 o'clock, but they'd see that on the cameras.
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:53am Wild Neil:

I am at work with literally nothing to do. So I am doing this. Boss is out of town today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:53am Aaron Working In Newark:

Great Song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:53am steveo:

i listened to this song 4 times yesterday...
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:54am CeeDubbles:

is this not David Lowery & Cracker? I recall it isn't but still
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:54am Wild Neil:

This Alvarius B sounds like a combination of Monster Magnet unplugged and the band that did Tiny European Car. Clem Snide.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 10:55am crateslinger:

The intro to this song is from Deep Purple, Sweet Child in Time, song with best rock screaming ever on live in Japan.
Avatar Fri. 11/17/17 10:56am Wild Neil:

a little bit like Cake too....

Honestly though, I dig most of this. And to be fair, on the rare occasion that I am subjected to WBGO, I hear some stuff I'd classify as "smooth" on there too. Sad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 11:25am crateslinger:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 11/17/17 11:28am Passaic River Blues:

@Ike: True. WBGO has some great shows (Felix Hernandez, Awilda Rivera's latin show, the news shows, Simon Rentner, etc.) but there is also a ton of awful, gormless "classic" ballad and light shite.
