Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02am ausmanx:

nothing some hinky dinky time can't fix, i hope, annie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04am annie:

it's just the passing of time and people .... this was expected but still more of a shock than i thought it would be; sitting personal shiva today and tomorrow. i could use a good loud lunch with some people...thanks guys, i love your spirit and support.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05am Uncle Michael:

Condolences, Annie.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05am annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06am listener james from westwood:

Alan sounds quite clear on this end!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06am annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06am listener james from westwood:

Deepest sympathies, annie, for both losses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09am annie:

<3 you all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10am listener james from westwood:

"Right now, fellas"—yes, we are indeed in the mid-50s....
  8:10am melinda:

Hi all
  8:11am dan:

Love that raw sound of 1950s radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12am ausmanx:

Deepest Sympathies, Annie..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15am Uncle Michael:

Annie, I can't make it back to the mixer just now. You'll have to crank it at your end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16am ausmanx:

meanwhile, tonight i'm subtitling a swedish drama/comedy series about a bunch of people making porn films. their new project is a porn version of the thor heyerdahl expedition, called CUM-TIKI
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16am doctorjazz:

Radio from 1955, Rock n' Roll era just beginning...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17am Uncle Michael:

Aus, that script isn't worth the papyrus it's written on.
  8:18am dan:

Kirk Douglas will be 101 next month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19am annie:

thanks for the effort, UM..
  8:23am melinda:

From Bob and somebody else, haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23am Uncle Michael:

I turned it up a little, but it was already pretty much where it should be, and where the live show will be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am annie:

it's fine..i put the headphones on..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28am annie:

  8:28am dan:

Those girls names today would be Madison, Ava, Isabella. Emma, Kendall, Harper, Avery, Olivia, Kennedy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35am doctorjazz:

Really mostly R&B, pre Rock n' Roll, cool stuff.
  8:39am dan:

Blackboard Jungle - great film
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39am annie:

wow, loved the commentary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am Uncle Michael:

The film is given so much credit for popularizing R&R. Interesting to hear a contemporary take, suggesting the opposite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55am annie:

i'm not sure if any of you have seen some of the Hot-Rod movies from the 50s... they are soo good..
Avatar 9:01am Roberto:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am doctorjazz:

Like this Charlie Dore (not familiar with him).
  9:06am dan:

I thought that Charlie Dore was a Nashville based singer. She's English. Fooled me.
Avatar 9:09am Marc Francis:

  9:10am dan:

The Gospel guitarist (and hopefully Rock and Roll Hall of Famer by the end of the year) Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Uncle Michael:

Avatar 9:11am Marc Francis:

@dan: Hear, hear!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am doctorjazz:

Definitely proto-rock (this Sister Rosetta Tharpe).
Have to check out Charlie Dore some more...and, it's her, of course)
  9:16am dan:

Who dug up this Lawrence Welk infestation of a Beatles classic?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Uncle Michael:

I did.
  9:18am dan:

Man enough to admit it Uncle.
Avatar 9:20am Marc Francis:

I haven't heard your show since the great switch.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am doctorjazz:

I've gotten to like these schlocky covers in my old age (wouldn't have been caught dead admitting that years back), though I still wouldn't BUY any of that stuff.
  9:25am dan:

When you said Mose, I thought you meant Moz, as in Morrissey. Mose Allison is better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Uncle Michael:

The first step is admitting you have a problem.
Avatar 9:27am Dominick:

Oh yes! Mose is speaking my language this morning

Duke!!! Tricky Sam!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am listener james from westwood:

I do love the older shtuff.
Avatar 9:42am northguineahills:

10 minutes? I was wanting the 44 minute rehearsal tapes version (assuming it exists)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Uncle Michael:

  9:43am dan:

I saw Joe Jackson in concert a few years when he was promoting his Duke Ellington tribute tour. He did the Duke justice with his amazing renditions.
Avatar 9:46am northguineahills:

Remember when the most of the US respected the UN? The Korean War might have done something about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am doctorjazz:

Chasing Trane?
Need to see this, have to check the PBS site, hope it's still there!
(TV time being taken up with Stranger Things 2 right now...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am doctorjazz:

(I think Wynton has mellowed a bit with age; he actually tolerates stuff he considered drivel or noise in his younger years).
  9:51am dan:

What's wrong with Wynton Marsalis?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Sue P.:

Sue P is always ready for some Melvins.
Avatar 9:52am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Uncle Michael:

Dan, apparently less and less....

Avatar 9:52am northguineahills:

There's a Trane doc on pbs, hello pbs.org tonight. Going to brew some tea to stay up.
I've seen Marsalis actually be positive about more creative artists before, and it surprised me.

Marsalis has said a few disparaging things about freer jazz in the past, and has been know to be a taskmaster w/ his groups.
Avatar 9:52am ndbob:

morning UM and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Uncle Michael:

Avatar 9:52am coelacanth∅:

ehem...good morning Uncle M and Dinklings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Uncle Michael:

Avatar 9:54am northguineahills:

new Melvins!

(listening on the app on my phone ,I'm lagging behind, commenting on my work puter.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am doctorjazz:

I think that was true about Marsalis when he first broke (Branford was the open minded Marsalis)-now, his baby, Jazz at Lincoln Center, does book artists from the free jazz world, seems swing and bebop are no longer the only accepted types of music.
  10:01am Alex in Illinois:

Kraftwerk done Cumbia style!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Uncle Michael:

  10:10am dan:

Labio-Dental Fricative = F and V sounds. I'm a linguist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Uncle Michael:

This sounds a lot like a certain Neii Sedaka song.
Avatar 10:17am northguineahills:

Cumbia rebajada started sort of like dj screw's cut and screwed hiphop mixes. In the early 80s, there was a cumbia outdoor party at the market in Monterrey, Mexico. The generators started to die and the turntables started to slow down. Cough syrup was the drug of choice, so the audience loved it. So first, rebajada mixes were made, then bands started making the music like that on purpose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Uncle Michael:

That's how I've heard the tale, NGH.
  10:19am dan:

Dubstep is the Cumbia of the 21st Century. Both are styles where there is no distinguishing melodies. Not my cup of tea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Stevel:

Le patter song, ala Francais! Oui, oui, oui! Liz!

Rascals, huh? Strange sounding for them (they got into the India thing).
Avatar 10:45am coelacanth∅:

these rascals made some good music
  10:48am dan:

What is this, a musical commercial?
Avatar 10:49am coelacanth∅:

an anti-commercial
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Sue P.:

This Doug Randle track surpassing even what you would imagine a parody to be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Sue P.:

...it's actually hurting my feelings.
  10:50am dan:

I think this is the first time I've ever heard the word "warranty" as a song lyric. Not a very musical word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Mark Hurst:

That's quite a song for colored plastic
Avatar 10:51am coelacanth∅:

he released this (on a plastic record, hopefully a coloured one) when the noses of pontiacs were being made of plastic, and fading to pale colors within a couple years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Uncle Michael:

Apparently that song is a litmus test for something.

Uncle! Ladies and gentlemen and friends beyond the binary.
Good morning/afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Mark Hurst:

@ Doug, I'm always a sucker for an instrument that's as big or bigger than the player using it (used to love seeing my daughter play bass clarinet in the school band, was sorry when she gave it up-punk guitar was more her style).
Avatar 11:38am coelacanth∅:

mechanics always don't reset it for me, saying it doesn't matter because my car's too old to need to pass emissions tests in new york; but maybe it would actually tell me that there was a problem, if it was not always on.

A "hoople" is a particular sized jar.

and mott the hoople is a novel
  11:46am dan:

A hoople is British slang for a bum.

Thanks, UM, great show, great fun!

coel -- Separate ad graphics overkill on the movie site. Although going back to the same page, I got different big ad whack. Awful waffle attack must be in rotation. I hope some algorithm or tracking hasn't targeted me for conversion/indoctrination.
Avatar 11:48am burke:

Mott is actually a verb roughly meaning "to manhandle"

  11:53am dan:

You read my mind Uncle Michael by playing Electric Light Orchestra. Love these guys. A fitting end to a great show.
Avatar 11:54am still b/p:

When exposed to Mott music in my teens, I had only one strange name association -- Major Hoople of the comic strips.
Avatar 11:54am coelacanth∅:

so..."manhandle the bum"?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am doctorjazz:

Love ELO as well (though haven't really listened to all their stuff that much)

Happy fun weekends, y'all!
Avatar 11:56am coelacanth∅:

...i assumed dan meant "butt" or "ass" (or rear-end, bootie, tail, bottom....) by "bum"; but you mean bum, like - bum?
Avatar 11:57am burke:

@coelacanth Only kidding.
Avatar 11:57am coelacanth∅:

(or - is it "manhandle the particular sized jar"?)
Avatar 11:59am coelacanth∅:

oh, burke that's too bad! -then what the hell's mott the hoople mean?!!
  11:59am listener james from westwood:

1000 thank yous, UM!
  12:00pm dan:

Mott the Hoople was a novel. The character was named Mott and he was a "hoople" or a good for nothing, a bum if you will.
Avatar 12:00pm still b/p:

I think I got "manhandle the particular sized jar" in some set of instructions written/translated by a non-English speaker.
Avatar 12:00pm coelacanth∅:
