Greetings from the United States of Failure, LLC!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm steveo:

Hello Fabio. If Jan 17, 1999 was your first show, you're now approaching your 1,000th play of Mr. Giant Man. I will now attempt to stop thinking and listen.
  3:08pm Asparagus:

What is this Fabio!!
  3:15pm Tony:

Fabio was doing shows on WFMU before 1999. Maybe that was the first show that was archived?
Avatar 3:16pm Fabio:

@steveo: that is when the playlists started and we began archiving. I've been here since 1986.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm steveo:

I was afraid of that; yes that's the first playlist I found. You're probably way over 1000, then. Thanks for being here today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Michael 98145:

pre-internetworking days
  3:19pm nic:

love this !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm crateslinger:

anal magic was it?
  3:23pm wfmu listener phillip:

fabio has been on wfmu for a LOOOONG! time. i remember him as far back as 1990.
Avatar 3:24pm david_:

upsala did not have any of the primeval internet systems?
Avatar 3:24pm Cecile:

Fabio, did you win last week?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm steveo:

Yes I started listening late 90s; I should have known better.
Avatar 3:25pm Cecile:

david, upsala couldn't even pay its employees.
Avatar 3:25pm northguineahills:

Saw Xela a few years back, got a sweet cassette from them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Michael 98145:

mp3 players didn't arrive until the mid-90s
Avatar 3:26pm david_:

ah yes
Avatar 3:27pm Chris from DC:

Oh hey, Xela, love this record.
Avatar 3:27pm david_:

gotta say i miss those 6:00 fabio-clay interchanges, but I love "Wake" so it's all good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm crateslinger:

I like "Wake" as well, and I listen every morning, even though it's a bit like the mickey mouse club.
  3:29pm convoy_pt2:

Fabiooooooo the sleep button is going off
Avatar 3:29pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

mickey mouse club with vomit samples?
Avatar 3:30pm david_:

i was moving and found an old disc-man style player that could read discs with mp3 files. That was Xanadu to me at the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm crateslinger:

...dump pixie dust on my head... why i oughtta...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Let ye among us who hasn't thrown leftover fried chicken bones onto the floor of subway cars cast the first stone.
Avatar 3:31pm david_:

Rev that sounds like the disney channel
  3:31pm Brendan:

This a safe Styx and Argent free zone.
Avatar 3:32pm Cecile:

Argent has about three great songs. I have heard Hold your Head High too much, but Liar is pretty damn great.
Avatar 3:32pm david_:

I note Starcastle wasn't mentioned
Avatar 3:32pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Speaking of lo-fi loop stuff: was just revisiting that Gate 'lavender head' LP: another one I have Fabio to thank for (heard it here first) ... that thing is a sea of wonders...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm crateslinger:

What was that show when we were kids where they'd look in the mirror and say, "I see Jimmy, and Stacy, and Bobby, and Suzie..."? Was that Romper Room? The Electric Company?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Michael 98145:

oh, no -- now i have 'hold yer head high' looping in my head. erk.
Avatar 3:34pm Cecile:

Avatar 3:34pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

'slinger: that would be Romper Room, methinks.
Avatar 3:35pm Cecile:

Michael: Liar! Liar! (does that help?)
Avatar 3:35pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Also, what Cecile said. Never got called. Revs don't Romper, apparently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Michael 98145:

Thanks, Cecile! I realized it was -head up-, anyway :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm crateslinger:

I had Greasy Kid's Stuff say my daughter's birthday when she was three. She like ran around the room until she hit the wall with her face and felled over just about.
Avatar 3:37pm Cecile:

But every Patty in the world got her name called a zillion times. I know they had baby naming books back then, so there's no excuse!
Avatar 3:37pm Cecile:

Fuck you. Pattys.

Strength Through Dialing!
Avatar 3:39pm Listener David in Budd Lake:

I listen on my car radio every day!
Avatar 3:39pm Cecile:

Are you getting all snobbish? Do we have to make a crystal radio set to listen to you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm crateslinger:

lol cecile. Log onto comments in the morning and Clay will say your name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm joe mulligan:

I listen on a Sony ICF38 Portable AM/FM Radio all the time at home in the BK!
Avatar 3:41pm Cecile:

He says my name all the time. I want Miss Trina or Kitty or Gertrude or Zaphod to say my name in the Romper Room class room!
Avatar 3:41pm northguineahills:

Kompakt is out of Cologne, Germany.
Avatar 3:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm steveo:

was a great first set & I was only babbling 3.4% of the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm crateslinger:

O wow. You remember the characters? That stuff was pre-consciousness for me.
Avatar 3:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

...and Vote GOMEZ as your Lord and FMU MASCOT.
Avatar 3:43pm Chris from DC:

Thou shalt have no mascots before Him.
Avatar 3:43pm Cecile:

crates, all the Romper Room ladies had different real names that I no longer remember, depending on what studio the show was shot out of. I just made some shit up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm crateslinger:

Well I love the names. Cheers!
Avatar 3:44pm Cecile:

ngh, one of my phrases if I ever get to Germany will be "where do you keep your Kompakt records?"
Avatar 3:45pm Cecile:

one name was from Gunsmoke, and the other from Hitchhiker's Guide...
Avatar 3:46pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm crateslinger:

Ah, right. Zaphod Beeblebrox. I think that's a regular name now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm steveo:

very yes for Naldi
Avatar 3:55pm Chris from DC:

Yay, Steven R. Smith.
Avatar 3:56pm Fabio:

@ Cecile: I ALWAYS Win!
  3:57pm P-90:

Greetings Fabio and all specimens of Fab-Biota in attendance.
Avatar 3:58pm Cecile:

Avatar 4:03pm northguineahills:

@Cecile 3:44 : Ha-haaaa!
Avatar 4:04pm northguineahills:

Dug the Steven Smith as per usual, now, this Brainworlds is amazing, and new to me!
  4:07pm Divan:

Avatar 4:11pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

What the NGH under the other NGH said.
  4:18pm P-90:

The Brainworlds track was very very nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Devin B.:

Arvo Part is the composer
  4:20pm Dean:

Sharp, n'est-ce pas?
Avatar 4:20pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Been finally discovering A.Pärt's music over here, of late... Very late to the Pärt-party.
  4:21pm Brendan:

First the dark chocolate run out, then the fun size bars run out, then the cherry starburst run out, now I’m stickin’ my hand in a plastic pumpkin pullin’ out watermelon and green apple jolly ranchers.
Avatar 4:23pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

500,000% agree, on the original Solaris. There is no comparison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm The Oscar:

Saw the trailer for Blade last month before Lucky. The tagline "THE 100TH FILM BY TAKASHI MIIKE" made me laugh out loud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Itzall Ablurr:

"Sword and sandal" is not of Japan- it refers to Sampson/Conan/Gladiator type movies. It's like a whole different part of the USA. Also, please play more Nina Rota, I like that one he does called "Lorelai", sounds a lot like Styx.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm diciassette:

I think Amarcord is the one where the guy goes up into the tree and yells VOGLIO UNA DONNAAAA and starts throwing nuts at people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Itzall Ablurr:

diciasette, you are right, that scene is GOLD. He is overcome with lust and will NOT come down out of his tree.
  4:29pm Margolies Abulafia:

its on mystery science theatre 3000
Avatar 4:30pm Cecile:

Sword and Sandals movies were shot mostly in Italy, weren't they?
Avatar 4:30pm Chris from DC:

I must see this.
Avatar 4:30pm βrian:

Exquisitely bad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Itzall Ablurr:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm The Oscar:

Manos is incredible-- I hope the restoration plays up here!
  4:30pm SeanG:

so bad it's good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm ɨkɛ:

MST3K did some that were even worse than "Manos", didn't they?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm The Oscar:

I actually went trick-or-treating as Torgo when I was 12 or 13. Literally no one got it. I wish I had photos.
  4:32pm GGG:

I think the first MST3K episode featured Manos...
  4:32pm P-90:

House of Bamboo: recommended!
Avatar 4:32pm Chris from DC:

Raymond Burr?
  4:33pm P-90:

Raymond Burr?
Avatar 4:36pm northguineahills:

Fabio wasn't wrong, this rather off-kilter for the Swans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Rich in Washington:

I wonder if Tarfu report will be on tonight.
  4:44pm Tony:

Rich: From the WFMU homepage: Special: A Dusty Show Rerun today, for The TARFU Report Which is on Hiatus
Avatar 4:47pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I so love it when multiple people invoke Raymond Burr in a questioning tone.
  4:49pm nic:

love this !!!
Avatar 4:51pm northguineahills:

I love this recording, I haven't heard it in a while (getting lazy on unpacking the records/cds)
Avatar 4:57pm geezerette:

Bardo music.
Avatar 4:59pm geezerette:

& then there's Bardot music. Bardot could read the Bardo to this and then rant about cats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Devin B.:

So good. Thanks for that, Fabio.
Avatar 5:02pm david_:

was ono in Eternal Music ever?
  5:03pm brainiac:

Raymond Burr?
Avatar 5:05pm northguineahills:

Bridgette Bardot/Bardo Pond collab, come on, I'd pay to watch that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm common:

Avatar 5:13pm geezerette:

  5:27pm nic:

love this !!!
Avatar 5:30pm northguineahills:

@uuee: You probably can't leave valuables lying around either if the thieves are as thick as the deer.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Bas NL:

@Michael 98145: This station has grown on me, made me grow, grew.. oh, you know. :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Michael 98145:

totally agree
Avatar 5:47pm northguineahills:

I remember when finding Gruppo d'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza's music was near impossible find, it took me years to find a cd of theirs. Glad so much of their stuff is available.
Avatar 5:48pm uuee:

@northguineahills It's weird, man. I keep moving further from civilization, all my life, I lived within range of the fmu transmitter, way out of range, now..I've been listening & supporting since the late '70's. I don't say much, but I know all youz guys.
Avatar 5:49pm TDK60:

  5:50pm Ted Kaczynski:

Pfffft. Civilization's a downer, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Michael 98145:

i think it moved to somewhere in europe
Avatar 5:51pm uuee:

Like, New York, culture & shit
Avatar 5:53pm TDK60:

I was being cynical a la Gandhi when asked what he thougt of "Western civilization". He said it might be a good idea.
  5:54pm Divan:

This is creeping me out--kind of Faustian
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Bas NL:

Maybe it's just that WFMU has animal magnetism.. or je ne sais quoi..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm queems:

i'm definitely not not scared of this
Avatar 5:56pm uuee:

Inside, Gandhi, was laughing like hell. His words were polite and civilized.
Avatar 5:56pm northguineahills:

I'm glad I found a patch of civilization as after I left Brooklyn, I spent almost a year in a cultural wasteland. WFMU was my prime connection to any culture during that time. Can't take it for granted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Michael 98145:

thanks again, Fabio
Avatar 5:58pm uuee:

A big amen to that!
Avatar 5:58pm david_:

another far-out show, Fabio, you do it every time. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Bas NL:

Thanks Fabio!
Avatar 5:59pm northguineahills:

Thannnnnks, Fabio!
