I took the train today and I was reading a "hiker trash" memoir and the author mentioned a couple of line of Take it Easy, so then I thought, OH IT'S TUESDAY, and I was Heavy Metalling pretty hard in my head by the time I was walking off the subway stairs. Love this Steeleye. What name hath this genre? Renaissance Folk?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am
medson:

Matt did you listen to the new Heaters album?
Avatar 9:13am
Lewis:

In some ways, listening to this, I can see where the Pogues come from...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am
doctorjazz:

Nice Steeleye Span to start the morning! British folk-rock is what they used to call it (the Brits took what the Byrds were doing and applied it to local folk music).
Avatar 9:14am

naw. the pogues are basically the bastard love child of the dubliners and the clash.

don't know the dubliners - I am thinking really of the deep connections to English folk music... but I am not strongly wed to the idea...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am

deejay on wvkr in poughkeepsie had a brief interview with jim mccarty as the latest iteration of yardbirds is playing in peekskill. i wanted him to take about renaissance/illusion but it only got a mention. hey mr. deejay - can you play 'kings and queens' by relf/mccarty's renaissance sometime?
Avatar 9:19am
glenn:

well, the pogues are shanty irish. makes sense that they are gonna play irish folk music instead of english folk music.

Hypnotic Anfang. Here's an interview. www.cltampa.com...
Avatar 9:22am
Lewis:

@glenn - right, some of my ideas are better than others ;-)
  9:22am
Listener Robert:

That "Lowlands of Holland" is a moving example of a ton of ballads like that concerning romantically picky people. It seems we have a lot of verse, etc. promoting the delusion of uniqueness. Are there any good songs you know of that proclaim the opposite?

There seem to be at least superficial ones with lyrics like "love the one you're with", etc., but I can't think offhand of any that really drive the point home.
Avatar 9:23am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

MORNIN, TROOPS.
...that's an utterly fabulous Steeleye LP.

Avatar 9:26am
Chris from DC:

The Vocokesh, yay.
  9:26am
Listener Robert:

What I mean is, I'd be interested in some that are done in past tense like that, telling a story of success after the apparent loss of a "unique" match.
Avatar 9:29am
glenn:

somebody, i forget who, once said that everybody in the world is married to their second choice. that seems a tad pessimistic to me.

Not an Eagles fan but that documentary (part one) is really good. And it's fair. Not much mythology. Self-mythologizing, yes. You can see how Henley and Frey thought they were right there with Lennon/McCartney. I also take Glen Frey's side in the bitter Frey-Felder dust-up. Felder had one song a night to sing. Too bad if he didn't feel like singing it.

I was a 15 year old kid when Hotel California came out, and I was going "these people are the richest people in the world, and all of sudden California is bad? California made them what they were!" I didn't have a lot of friends back then.

I love the Dio Sabbath. It's just a different lovely flavor. They made some of their best, heaviest stuff in the decade before Dio died.

Oh, but they are so great. Greedheads, hypocrites, and completely clueless about it. They were the first major act to charge triple digit tickets, and yet they still think of themselves as a band of the people.
