Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm BronwynB:

hey irwin and everyone! i like today's show title
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Carmichael:

New intro song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm JtotheK:

agreed, cool show title!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm The Oscar:

I've always confused That Petrol Emotion with Teardrop Explodes, and I'm only just now realizing it's thanks to "Warm Leatherette."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm zopa:

Irwin, did you get bubblegum with this single?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Carmichael:

I've always confused That Petrol Emotion with The Saw Doctors.
  3:18pm Laura L:

You gonna play Constantinople from that Residents record? That's on that Duck Stab 45, isn't it?
Avatar 3:19pm TehBadDr:

Hi Irwin, all. Loving the cover pics!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Irwin:

Not sure, LL. I'll toss the vinyl on the TT and see where the needle lands.
Avatar 3:22pm Hoboken Jack:

Hello Irwin, hello Bronwyn, hello all! So is this one of those singles apps I've heard about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Asheville Jon:

i am secretly snickering and sneering.
  3:23pm Laura L:

It's a favorite Residents tune--hope you can get it on the TT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Irwin:

I'll take that as a request, LL.
  3:25pm Dean:

That entire DS 7" is a winner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm BronwynB:

hey jack! yes, welcome to tinder. betcha didn't expect it to look like this! ;)
  3:26pm berbo:

1930's tenors is the oldies format of the future.
  3:27pm Eric Hat:

Just thought I’d check in and let you know how swell it is to be home and tuning in on the radio again, especially for these singles shows.... thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Alison Porchnik:

I miss the old days when "pet" was a term of endearment between couples.
  3:28pm Laura L:

Yay!! Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm JtotheK:

great residents track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Asheville Jon:

/Tips Top Hat
  3:30pm Dean from Texas:

I loved this from the 80's
  3:31pm melinda:

Hello Irwin and listeners
  3:32pm Dean from Texas:

A bit like syd straw from the golden palaminos
Avatar 3:34pm Wild Neil:

PEACE All. Warm Leatherette reminds me of a song I used to hear on Morning Becomes Eclectic all the time, it went "Hands Around My Throat"....it was kinda like WL.
Death in Vegas.
@Dean-Syd Straw, Celluloid Records, saw them open for The Fabulous Thunderbirds in NY at the Felt Forum. 1986?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm JtotheK:

(still hasn't seen the 'Theory of Obscurity' film about The Residents. would like to.)
  3:36pm melinda:

I haven't seen the Residents film either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm The Oscar:

I love that both sides of this single have been played today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm BnowB:

Great show as always! Thanks Irwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm The Oscar:

Also Theory of Obscurity is pretty great-- depending on which theories you subscribe to regarding their identities, it may be the closest we'll ever get to an autobiographical tell-all.
  3:38pm Laura L:

Dean from Texas, me too--loved that from the 80s, and am also from Texas (left the Lone Star State for NYC 1982). The Residents film is fun, but of course!
  3:39pm flashbazbo:

Rodd is gods
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Asheville Jon:

this is swingin'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm zopa:

All is forgiven, Eddie.
  3:40pm MONEYBAG$:

I hope those lyrics were all improvised
  3:40pm flashbazbo:

Godd. 3 attempts wouldn't do
  3:41pm flashbazbo:

Sorry that sounded exactly like rodd Keith
Avatar 3:42pm Sean B.:

Saw the Residents Movie a while back....it's exactly what you would expect from them = awkward , somewhat twisted insane humor where nothing is off limits...then just add music. Cant believe I just heard Constantinople. Man haven't heard that in a long time. awesome.
  3:44pm melinda:

I like the bed music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Passaic River Blues:

@Melinda: was just thinking the same thing.
Avatar 3:52pm Wild Neil:

Modern Lovers song?
  3:52pm berbo:

  3:53pm melinda:

Neil I was just trying to remember where I heard it before. That's it.
  3:53pm Blob Dobbs:

Wow, that was totally Debsey Wykes doing some vocals on that Captain Sensible song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Irwin:

Is she from Dolly Mixture?
Avatar 3:56pm Wild Neil:

@Melinda-sometimes I surprise my wife by being able to id a song on the radio. I just say, it's nothing, I just listen to WFMU for years. She thinks I'm some kind of musical expert, but I just was exposed to a lot of music, that's all...WFMU DJs are the REAL experts in my book.
  3:56pm Blob Dobbs:

Yep, and Birdie, St. Etienne, etc. Looks like they had a professional relationship according to the internet
Avatar 3:57pm Wild Neil:

Irwin this show is REALLY all over the place today in a good way. Wow. Glad you are playing some sublime Jazz by Mr. Sun Ra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm steveo:

really enjoying sun ra, yep
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Passaic River Blues:

The Sun Ra cut was lovely.
  4:01pm melinda:

@Neil yeah, if you listen to FMU enough you can impress people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Mark Hurst:

Sounded good here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Asheville Jon:

that was the best EAS test i've heard in a long time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Irwin:

I declare this Freddie Scott recording one of the greatest singles in history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm steveo:

yeah so good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Kat in Chicago:

Yay, the Shams!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm steveo:

In 1962, [Freddie Scott] worked with fellow songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King on their song "Hey, Girl", recording a demo for singer Chuck Jackson. When Jackson failed to turn up to a recording session, Scott recorded the song himself, and, when eventually released by the Colpix label some months later, it rose to no. 10 on both the pop and R&B charts. [wikipedia]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Kat in Chicago:

also belated yay for Madder Rose
  4:08pm andrewb:

Not to name drop but, one of my sisterinlaw's bride's maids is the brother of one of the guys in thinking fellers union.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Irwin:

Laura L is conflicted by this Chevy song.
  4:10pm Laura L:

AAAIIIEEEE! Jam Handy Calypso Collision!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm steveo:

this is the longest advertisement I've ever heard on WFMU!
Avatar 4:14pm V Priceless:

hey Irwin and all! The Move always moves me out of the woodwork! Yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Kat in Chicago:

andrewb: guys can be bridesmaids now? I must be behind the times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Alison Porchnik:

Ok, I can send you the pillow but you already know that I drool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm steveo:

epic intro
Avatar 4:30pm Listening Out There:

Everyone who listens to WFMU drools...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm steveo:

might as well face it you're addicted to drool
  4:33pm cosmic matrix:

oooh big drums I wonder if they were recorded in that hallway with the giant TUBE like the power station hit "some like it hot"
  4:34pm cosmic matrix:

those ghost notes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm coelacanth∅:

hmm, very interesting...
  4:37pm andrewb:

Robert Palmer did a not terrible 5 episode"history of Rock" on PBS. I liked how he pretty much circled the development of funk around Bootsie .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm coelacanth∅:

well, one of my favorite Tom Petty songs is a b-side that most would call a throwaway.
("gator on the lawn")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm coelacanth∅:

...but i do like some other Robert Palmer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm steveo:

would it be wrong to tell my family i'm working late then just sit here and stare out the window and listen to the rest of irwin's show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm coelacanth∅:

only if it would hurt them.
- just tell them to turn on wfmu to keep busy until you get home. they'll forget all about you.
  4:46pm Laura L:

Steveo, why not just tell them: I'm going to sit here and stare out the window and listen to the rest of Irwin's show and see you later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm steveo:

THE TRUTH? Now, why didn't I think of that?

In reality though, and I'll be leaving at 5 so Irwin, feel free to do an hour of dead air after that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm coelacanth∅:

i've always told what i thought was the truth; look where it's gotten me?

..yeah you better lie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm chris:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm steveo:

thanks for the great music irwin; I'm gonna check out a bit of shooby then scram (don't tell coela)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm zopa:

I was hoping against hope that there would be more Shooby today. Thanks Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Irwin:

I'll bet Hoboken Jack has tuned out to watch The All Rise Seasonal Showcase.
  5:03pm Dean:

I met Rich (LaBonte) & Famous on Hollywood Blvd. a l-o-n-g time ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Irwin:

Old friends, love 'em both, still in touch. She married Richard Foos, one of the founders of Rhino (the store and label).
  5:06pm Dean:

Foos! A member of The Low Numbers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm zopa:

Thanks for the reminder, Irwin. I'm on the West Coast and will listen to Sterling, Waldman, AND Irwin simultaneously.
  5:07pm Dean:

Rhino was a marvelous store, as was Aaron's. So many good ones from those days are gone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm coelacanth∅:

still 2 rhino stores near me. (one close; one not far)
they're good, but there's another local record store that's preferable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Irwin:

zopa: Sterling and Waldman are who got me out of the habit of listening to the Bombers on radio. Can't stand either of them. Bring back Tommy Hutton and Hank Greenwald!
  5:14pm Dean:

The large Westwood store is long gone, is it not? The one in Claremont? Still there, maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Alison Porchnik:

Wastepaper Basket Fire!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm coelacanth∅:

the closer one has moved twice since i've lived in the area; each time smaller. the current store is smaller than some people's shoe closets. when they were in the first of the 3 i saw some good free shows there. (including yo la tengo, around 2001?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Passaic River Blues:

John Sterling is a crime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm zopa:

Irwin: They are polarizing figures for sure. My wife misses Rizutto.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Irwin:

  5:16pm Dean:

There's a good record featuring Nels Cline and Thurston Moore improvising at the Westwood store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Barney Grubbs:

one in claremont's still there.( I've still got way too many 7"s and used cds I got there early 90s that are now far from their original homes)
  5:18pm Dean:

This one reminds me to dig out and play my Barry Goldwater prexy campaign LP.
Avatar 5:18pm Listening Out There:

The Claremont Rhino is the only one I've been to. I'm on the left coast...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Cal Zone!:

Super Duper Show Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm coelacanth∅:

anyway it's a franchise, no? so they must vary greatly from store to store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm coelacanth∅:

(or - we could just listen to the muriel's treasure archives)
  5:22pm Dean:

Never considered that, @coelacanth. Explains a lot.
  5:25pm Dean:

Rich gave me their Neutron Star record when I met them c.'78. Still have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Michael 98145:

there has been so much, little-played music to enjoy this week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Irwin:

But very few pledges. I got one from a cat during this program (thanks, Amos!), but NO HUMANS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm common:

hello cats
  5:32pm Amos:

you're meowcome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Irwin:

Amos has good taste, which is rare in a cat. Have you ever tasted cat food? (Go ahead, make jokes.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Michael 98145:

[ i don't think i've ever been -that- stoned ]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm zopa:

What is smarter than a talking cat? A spelling bee!
Avatar 5:42pm TehBadDr:

Doubling down on Shop Assistants! Nice!
Avatar 5:44pm TehBadDr:

Hey, do those tiny little cd singles count?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Michael 98145:

Jamaican singles were typically off-center
  5:45pm Dean:

Or, as I posted earlier today on Mary Wing's show, you drill four eccentric holes into the record and let the wonderful noise emerge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CCB59CTZmM&feature=youtu.be
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Michael 98145:

speaking of stoned
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Michael 98145:

@Dean, wow
  5:47pm Dean:

It's a doozy, isn't it? Buddy of mine did it many years ago, well before I met him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm coelacanth∅:

Dean that's amazing! i'm mad at myself for not thinking of it.
  5:52pm Dean:

Boyd Rice (aka NON) did it on his first record, i.e., he included an eccentric hole. My buddy's "Baker Street," however, is a labor of love and careful analog tending.

Heh, Slonimsky. Still another buddy of mine, one of Ernst Toch's grandsons, knew him.

Call me Kevin Bacon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Irwin. I enjoyed your Shooby Taylor special on Vocal Fry the other night. www.wfmu.org... I never would've known about him otherwise.
  5:54pm cat:

I knew about shobby cuz I lived in a warehouse in Newark
  5:54pm Dean:

(I once interviewed Kevin Bacon's personal assistant. True.)
  5:55pm cat:

*shooby I mean it was auto incorrect screwing me up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Michael 98145:

(thanks to WFMU we all now have a somewhat connection to Mr Bacon :)
  5:57pm Dean:

I studied Bacon in college as an undergraduate, continued with four Masters, and finally a Ph.D. Six degrees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Michael 98145:

thanks again, Irwin
  5:58pm Laura L:

Thanks, Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Rob (Jerzcity):

I once yelled at and waved at Kevin Bacon in the diamond district about 15 years ago. He was crossing the street and I yelled out of my van window, "HEY KEVIN!" He waved without looking and ducked into a limo.
Great guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm coelacanth∅:

i only study bacon from afar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Rob (Jerzcity):

Thanks for the mind melt, @Dean!
Thanks for the good tunes, Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm chris:

thanks, Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Irwin
  6:02pm Listener Robert:

I'd no idea about Ms. Boule! Thought you'd lost touch w her entirely. Was it someone else who brought her death to your att'n? What'd she die of?
