A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Bonjour Trouble and Trouleteers !

It's official, i'll be coming to NYC ! :) I'm thrilled, this is going to be the first time for me
Avatar 9:10am Trouble:

bonjour pierre, that is soooo exciting! and you are welcome to crash with us. talk to BCBG to see if our place would work for you...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am melinda:

Hi folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am The Oscar:

As a kid, I once went with my dad to his office. His cubicle was completely undecorated, except for three small photos: me, my mom, and Thelonious Monk. Needless to say, this sounds like my childhood.
  9:14am Phillio:

Good morning!
  9:15am Phillio:

Always good to wake up with some Monk on the stereo. Ensures a groove of a day ahead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Your Ace From Exchange Place:

Love Thelonious Monk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Passaic River Blues:

@The Oscar: that's a wonderful image. Really cool.
Avatar 9:16am pierre:

Trouble, you have no idea of how nice it is to hear this. I can't thank you enough. We are actually organizing the trip (what to do, what to see, where to buy records…). If we take your kind offer, know that I want to bring you wine, or cheese… or whatever french stuff you'd like. And that in exchange, you are very welcome to come crash at our place !

I love this Thelonious Monk !
Avatar 9:18am βrian:

Say, have you ever had a nice Bandol, Trouble?
  9:18am Phillio:

A while back I up a home practice recording of Monk working out his arrangement of "Smoke Gets in your Eyes" that is endlessly fascinating. Kind of like taking a lesson with Monk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am jkeigh:

Good Morning. What a show so far!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Webhamster Henry:

This is the slowest turning windmill! I'm surprised you're not playing "Les Moulins de Mon Coeur"!
Avatar 9:20am Trouble:

pierre, we have lots of places to send you! BCBG brought us a magical red wine that was bottled by friends of theirs: the bottle was re-purposed and then coated in solid red paint on the outside, crazy fab!

@pierre: when are you coming to NYC? How exciting!
Avatar 9:41am BEAVO:

Gillian Hills and Jane Birkin were th two wannabe models that had the three way with David Hemmings. in Blow up she was also in Clockwoork Orange.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Lewis:

Monk's piano playing is so absolutely amazing - and his ego with respect to where it is in the composition was so restrained in many ways...
Avatar 9:42am pierre:

(I too prefer red, although last week I had the best white from between Jura and Burgundy… that one was amazing)

@Brian : I'd love too :)

@sugarwolf : i'm staying from the 11th till the 18 of November, that's gonna be short, but it'll make me want to go back i'm sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am steveo:

oh dangit, I had the drummer stream on (where joni mitchell was played) ugh ugh sorry ugh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am melinda:

@steveo I hate it when that happens. It makes for funny random comments tho.

Neil = goosebumps still. Thanks for playing this!!!
Avatar 9:51am Trouble:

this song is soooo moving for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Adrian in London:

Salut Trouble et les troublées. I listened to last week's show this morning so it's a six-hour marathon for me today. An enjoyable one, obviously, not like an actual running marathon.
Avatar 9:53am pierre:

@sugerwolf : do that and we'll have a drink by the Seine

@Brian : Vin jaune is awesome ! I suggest you try Vin Orange from italy, it's very interesting too
Avatar 9:54am Trouble:

good to hear, adrian! i'm sure somewhere someone would rather run a marathon than listen to FMU...
Avatar 9:56am βrian:

Hmm, there might be some billboard material there. Listening to WFMU can be less arduous than running a marathon, or some such.
Avatar 9:56am pierre:

imagine, running a marathon WHILE listening to WFMU…

Avatar 10:12am Trouble:

good idea , michael! i saw lonnie give an artists talk at the atlanta museum: everyone should. he is a fabulous human
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Michael:

Going out there next week and saw that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Itzall Ablurr:

Not no star up for amadou & miriam? OK, I star that song in my mind!
  10:32am medic8:

I kinda find this inappropriate. The west coast never mocked the tri state area during its hard times.
  10:33am Bill W:

I need to find a karaoke place that has "Cali."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am annie:

i'm so glad i have no idea who this weinstein dude is..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Itzall Ablurr:

annie, I was able to say the same until this morning- gee, thanks NPR.
Avatar 10:39am glenn:

so, bronwyn - how was sparks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am melinda:

Apparently many people thought they were talking about Harvey Fierstein when the news broke, and were confused.
Avatar 10:43am glenn:

i was one of them, melinda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am melinda:

i love this period of hip-hop and disco rap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am melinda:

Haha, glenn.
Avatar 10:44am βrian:

"Buttle, not Tuttle!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am BronwynB:

@glenn: amazing!!! literally the best show i've ever seen. i can't even believe russell mael is real- how can a 69-year-old be that incredibly energetic and athletic on stage??? and they played so many great songs i wasn't expecting to hear. and they were just so happy and sweet, like there was really a lot of joy in what they were doing
  10:46am table_for_one:

what is their banter like
  10:47am table_for_one:

they seem like odd fellows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Priscilla:

Doesn't this sound a little bit like the Magnetic Fields?
Avatar 10:48am glenn:

good. there's really nothing worse for a lover of a band to see them and have them suck.
Avatar 10:49am pierre:

vive Jean-Jacques Perrey !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am BronwynB:

it was pretty much only russell talking, and he had a great rapport with the audience, but then at the very end ron very shyly and sincerely told us he was so happy and grateful that we gave them such a great reception. i've always heard that they were odd, but i don't really get that now that i've seen them and met them. they seem incredibly genuine and sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Adrian in London:

@BronwynB It's so good when you see an amazing show. Did you ever read this fun interview with Sparks? thequietus.com...
Avatar 10:57am Chris from DC:

Good timing here. Seeing Mdou Moctar tonight, psyched.
  10:57am table_for_one:

also, is it fair to say they are at their most popular now? were they this big during the giorgio morodor years
  10:58am table_for_one:

either way, yes that is really impressive how relevant they are esp at that age
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Hughie Considine:

This set is moving my soul.
  10:58am table_for_one:

like that the world has caught up to sparks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am BronwynB:

@adrian: i did! they're so great

@table for one: they might be at their most acclaimed and appreciated by the music world in general now, but in 1974 they were genuine pop stars in england and couldn't go to the laundry without getting mobbed by screaming girls
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am annie:

@itzall: i escape that trap of NPR, it's been turned off for me for a long time, ....now i have the reactioanry posts of my pals on Fb, which makes for better entertainment. no escaping pop culture..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am BronwynB:

@table for one: yeah exactly. im so impressed by two older guys who don't just go for the nostalgia. they're still so creative and inventive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am BronwynB:

not that you can tell russell is old. he looks 39.
Avatar 11:03am bobdoesthings:

how do you pronounce "souleyman" - is it soo-lay-man or how I keep saying it "soul-ee-man" ?
  11:04am jess:

Avatar 11:06am bobdoesthings:

so.... soo-leh-mon? that's what I'll go with now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Ken From Hyde Park:

Irwin played "Chocolate Rain" yesterday afternoon. It seemed to be a slowed-down version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Scraps:

h'lo hey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am melinda:

@annie that happened to me too, quit NPR to take a news break but you can't escape it on social media.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am annie:

the news on FB i find to be quite entertaining in an odd way. the news is not "news", it's knee-jerk alt-sites. i've even seen articles on how the left coast fires are not real, due to the presence of trees and no houses ... all i can say is photo-shop is *someone's* friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am melinda:

hi Scraps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am melinda:

@annie yikes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am rsj:

small change's first set was gloriously hip hoppy
Avatar 11:12am glenn:

judging from this, i don't think they even bothered with their laundry in 1974. www.youtube.com...

I think i'm gonna use this song for my trip to new-york
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am ⓘⓚⓔ:

I like Mott St., but Mott St. in *July*?! Yeah, nothing compares to that -- because nothing else is quite so smelly! Ha ha. (And crammed with tourists -- it seems to be in all the tourist guidebooks, like the Brooklyn Bridge.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am steveo:

mulberry is somewhat similar in july
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am steveo:

delaware or deutchland, joe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Devin B.:

Yay Jacqueline Humbert!
  11:23am jess:

@Ken from Hyde park
I heard it yesterday and forgot how good it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am ɨkɛ:

Welcome, @Pierre! If there are particular cuisines you really like, let me know and I'll point you towards the right hole-in-the-wall restaurants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am joe mulligan:

@Steveo - the first state! I thought that may be seen either way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am ɨkɛ:

(Unless you want "American" food -- then I have no clue! LOL.)
Avatar 11:27am Wild Neil:

Peace all. @Pierre-If I remember right there are about ten or twelve Indian restaurants in a row on 6th street near 3rd ave in Manhattan
Avatar 11:27am Wild Neil:

Everything from cheap to expensive and everything in between. I think Sonar Gayon was cheap but good, but that was 1993 or so.
  11:27am Listener142985:

Trouble, thx for playing the piece from the Sunrise score--that is a truly classic film. Very curious to hear what Morricone Youth came up with for it.
Avatar 11:29am Trouble:

our spanish exchange student wanted 'american' food, so we took him to pies N thighs in brooklyn for fried chiccken and dinosaur BBQ: loved it! but of course, since he he is a 16 boy...

i'm from delaware, too; didn't want to assume
Avatar 11:30am Chris from DC:

@ Ike and Wild Neil : that's awesome, thanks guys ! I've grown with the picture of diners… so I don't know where i'll be eating, but I know i'll want to try diner food, hear diner talk… this is very american/exotic to me. Big refill of coffees, fries, pancakes : I love it
Avatar 11:32am pierre:

Then I've hear that on the east coast there is amazing sea food, so I think i'd love to try this as well
Avatar 11:32am pierre:

and proper mexican food as well, as in europe we don't have much places with good american food
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am BronwynB:

pierre, if you want a classic american diner i recommend chelsea square diner at 23rd & 9th
Avatar 11:34am pierre:

sorry, a bit on a talking spree here, but I saw Mdou Moctar this summer and I loved it. the guy is charismatic !

Super cool, Thanks a lot BronwynB :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am steveo:

trouble is there still the flamingo diner in jersey city? I think i heard it changed ownership...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am ɨkɛ:

@WN, back in the day, there was a ridiculous conspiracy theory that all of those Indian restaurants were secretly connected to one single hidden mega-kitchen, ha! Not true, of course. That row has diversified a bit & it's not as ridiculously cheap as it used to be. And there's probably better Indian food on 27th & Lex in "Curry Hill" now, or Jersey City.
Avatar 11:34am Trouble:

also fed my spanish youngster tacos from a street cart near me, and that was his first taco. so cute
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am steveo:

and I want to know what happens with 16-year-old boys in Brooklyn! Did you just mean that he ate $600 worth of chicken and dessserts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am The Oscar:

@Pierre Did you see "Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red in It?" Really damn charming, and Moctar is great in it.
Avatar 11:35am Wild Neil:

@Pierre-DINERS are ALL OVER New Jersey. Maybe TickTock diner? I think my sister took me there once, it was ok. I think there is one in Clifton, NJ too. www.ticktockdinerny.com OH! If they have deep fried pierogi, try that, they are pretty fucking amazing. They were in this other diner in Allentown, PA anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am annie:

i love that the focus of travelling always seems to be the food...
Avatar 11:37am Wild Neil:

@Pierre-I LOVE diners, but make sure it is run by Greeks or Poles to be really really really good. I was in a Russian run diner once and it was dirty, but that was in Tannersville, PA so avoid that one.
Avatar 11:37am bobdoesthings:

I just became curious as to what dishes are defined as "american food" - www.cnn.com...
Avatar 11:38am Wild Neil:

Why Poles? Because Poles taught the French how to cook according to somebody in Poland who told me that.
American foods-Cheeseburger and French Fries with a milkshake?
Avatar 11:38am pierre:

@The Oscar : yes, yes I did, in a movie festival and I loved it. Thanks for bringing it up.

@Wild Neil : Thansk a lot for the tip, I will check it up.

Loving the show here in Krommenie / The Netherlands. Blasting it out through the speakers in the kitchen whilst preparing dinner for the fam!

Avatar 11:39am Wild Neil:

@Pierre-you gotta go to Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Avatar 11:40am Wild Neil:

SUPER trendy hipster ground zero.
Avatar 11:40am Trouble:

thanks @ajay! glad to hear!

just checking in from the belly of the beast (Manhattan to be exact). nice to hear some familiar (and unusual) sounds as I prepare for class!
Avatar 11:40am Trouble:

@steveo, still here, but hardly a diner, i would say...
Avatar 11:40am Chris from DC:

Never found pierogi as good as my grandmother's were, but deep fried sounds intriguing.

wonderful show Trouble!
Avatar 11:41am pierre:

@Wild Neil : i've heard that this is a very trendy and cool place. well I think we'll try to go and walk there for sure… There is so many thing to see and visit. What about Harlem ? I've dreamed of Harlem since I am a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am steveo:

hmm, that's too bad. I have great memories of the flamingo in the late 90s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am annie:

it ain't your grandfather's harlem, pierre, not any more..

I don't believe the Tick Tock Diner of NY is related to the NJ one, @WN! Also, did you know about the attempted Tick Tock torture/murder?! State police foiled an evil Tick Tock plot a few years ago!
Avatar 11:43am Wild Neil:

@Pierre-I would NOT go to Harlem alone at night in 1992. Maybe now its like the Greenwich Village for all I know. If you want to see slums and crack dealers maybe take a cab through the South Bronx ? Still, ask a local here.
Avatar 11:43am Trouble:

@steveo pies n thighs is not super pricey, it's the real deal. we wandered down by the water while we waited, over by where the old domino sugar factory was, DIY park there now until a giant high rise takes over
Avatar 11:44am Wild Neil:

Go to the Apollo Theatre maybe? Or a jazz club? I am clueless.
Avatar 11:47am pierre:

@ annie and Wild Neil : yeah, I imagine it has changed. And well, I wouldn't want to see dealers and slums, but some district that encapsulated what I imagine would be the life of the urban life of New-York. But then again, it's gonna be my first time in the USA, and I'm imagining all of this with the mind of a french guy engorged into american cinema and music :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am steveo:

i want to go!
Avatar 11:48am pierre:

@ Wild Neil : a jazz club, yes, ThAT would be nice if not too expensive

@Pierre-In general (and there are exceptions) listed expensive to less expensive
1. Manhattan
2. Hoboken NJ and Brooklyn and Queens and Jersey City
3. A little further out in NJ-Morristown
4. Hackensack NJ-short bus ride out of NYC

Avatar 11:58am Wild Neil:

And CENTRAL PARK is free! oh and The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the NATURAL HISTORY museum-they are actually free or $0.01 because the donation is "suggested". They HAVE to explain that to you if you ask I think. At least in 1992 they did. You look cheap, but hey if you can you can.
