Beautiful Boy Sean shares a birthday with the old man -- how 'bout dat? Lennon-Claypool Delirium cover of "Tomorrow Never Knows" seems like a doubly-good selection to play sometime today!
Avatar 3:10am Scraps:

Skin Diver, and Nona Hendrix, was a favorite of Velma and mine
  3:12am markr:

Stay tuned. Your Lennon requests have also been noted for Hour Two of this evening (morning?)'s program.
  3:12am markr:

Scraps, believe it or not, this was one of the albums we played in the birthing room when my daughter was born.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12am pacific standard simon:

My father -- another John -- turned 82 four days ago.
Avatar 3:13am Scraps:

Mark, that's great.
  3:15am markr:

Happy birthday to Simon's Dad! Maybe he'd enjoy some Modern Jazz Quartet later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16am pacific standard simon:

My favorite cover of TNK is, of course, the 801 version.
Avatar 3:16am Scraps:

Hendryx, Hendryx, Hendryx. I know that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18am Fuzzy:

Haven't heard that one, @pss. BTW, your avatar is very appropriate today!

Wow, didn't know today was PJ's B'Day too.

Ever taken the Briggs-Myers personality test? Most people in the U.S. have. Your personality gets categorized according to a combination of attributes based on four types. I think those four types should be the four Beatles.

John Lewis
  3:34am markr:

I dunno what happened to the clicky stars! Did Jeff Conklin take the clicky stars with him when he left? Bring back my clicky stars, dammit! John Lewis was the piano player and ostensible leader of the MJQ, Zuqq.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35am pacific standard simon:

I had wisdom teeth extracted while listening to C&W on laughing gas. It was a a steel guitar epiphany.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37am Fuzzy:

Clicky-stars are there for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37am pacific standard simon:

I see clicky stars.

I love "And Your Bird Can Sing", which is John singing, but more for George playing guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am Vincent Nifigance:

My preferred version of Across The Universe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am Fuzzy:

I like the Space Lady version of this too.
  4:12am markr:

Welcome Sebastian. You have to leave out a lot of great songs when you limit yourself to an hour! Don't hate me for leaving out a favorite.
  4:13am markr:

I thought Bowie did a nice version of this song, too (which John participated in, right?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15am Fuzzy:

Yes, Mark -- he played guitar and did backing vocals on that one with David in '75.
  4:16am markr:

Yes Fuzzy, my memory was a little fuzzy (pardon the pun). That's the session where they cooked up "Fame," too, I believe. One of the benefits of John living in NY and somebody like David would call and say, "Hey, I'm recording, come on down!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17am pacific standard simon:

You can't do a John Lennon show without a version of "Strawberry Fields Forever', though.
Avatar 4:17am zuqq zardo:

Or Mind Games!
  4:20am markr:

Oh I can see the hate mail now. I told you I had to make some tough calls. I gave priority to listener requests, some of which were rather odd--but that's the FMU way, isn't it? The odd choice, I mean.

2 hours of John it is, then! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24am pacific standard simon:

Seriously? "How do You Sleep" was the nadir of the Lennon/McCartney relationship.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42am pacific standard simon:

Amazing album. It's a pity I couldn't understand it all when I was 14.
Avatar 4:42am joeray:

The Lennon Plastic Ono Band LP is my favorite post Beatle solo album.
Avatar 4:44am CDToaster:

@markr: Good morning, great tribute show! CDToaster's request is "You Know My Name, Look Up the Number." That tune's also on the Past Masters set.
Avatar 4:47am joeray:

Yoko's Plastic Ono Band is getting respect these days (especially on WFMU) that it didn't get when it was released.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am pacific standard simon:

When I was a kid, I actually walked into a record store and asked for a copy of the new single, "Instant Caramel". I kid you not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49am Fuzzy:

I liked that Bowie song "Chocolate Chip City" when I was a kid.
Avatar 4:49am joeray:

@PSS: on Kraft records!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55am pacific standard simon:

Don Preston born September 21st, 1932
  4:56am markr:

He sounds great on this. Nicky Hopkins also deserves a shout-out for his electric piano solo on "How Do You Sleep?"
  4:56am miles:

I'm just a jelly sky
  5:00am markr:

I actually haven't listened to "God" in a long time. I'd forgotten how powerful it is, his list of everything he doesn't believe in. Goddamn, he was brilliant (stating the obvious).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01am pacific standard simon:

Pair this up with the Who track, "The Seeker", for high comedy.
  5:12am markr:

One of the DJs here (I can't remember which one) opined that "You think you're gonna take her away with your money and your cocaine") was one of the best opening lines to a song ever. I don't disagree.
Avatar 5:15am geoff mcq:

Breakdown is a wee killer of a track. Love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16am pacific standard simon:

I suspect that Tom had a cocaine problem of his own, at one time. Hence his death at 66.
  5:17am markr:

Come on you guys, I'm only at 7% of my goal. Let's see if we can get to 25% in the next 45 minutes. A couple Swag for Life donations will get us there.
  5:18am markr:

In the excellent Petty biography by Warren Zanes, he admits to falling into heroin addiction for awhile, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21am pacific standard simon:

The only Tom Petty tribute I've found on WFMU, up to now, is on Evan Funk Davies' show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22am bnowb:

This is truly what a TP concert was like HIT after Hit, insane the talent. "more hits than Rod Carew" MCA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23am bnowb:

wow herion and coke.. knew he parred i saw some pics at end without beard.. man was NOT well.. he was one of my all time favs... what great set TY
  5:23am markr:

Jeff opened with Tom's version of "Feel a Whole Lot Better" on his Avant Ghetto show tonight. I think people have been playing him, maybe not a whole set at a time like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29am bnowb:

a truly beautiful song.. I've not heard a full Petty set. that was really cool. Some great selections! Bravo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29am pacific standard simon:

@Mark - I will be dedicating half of my October pledge to you.
  5:34am Mark R:

Thank you, Simon--appreciate it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34am coelacanth∅:

greetings Mark that Tom Petty set was perfect for my drive home just then
happy birthday John
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35am pacific standard simon:

Now this is the kind of thing I've been listening to since I bought a new turntable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44am pacific standard simon:

WFMU should coordinate with Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, in San Francisco -- you people could make some beautiful music together. And no hurricanes!
  5:44am markr:

I got a new turntable about a year ago, too, Simon! It's a brand called Rega--from UK. Very simple design, minimalist. I've been very happy with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46am bnowb:

I saw Petty when a very young Lenny Kravitz debut record Let love rule was out. he was better than i thought and Petty blew my socks off. Honestly Herioin is not nearly as bad for your organs as cocain or speed. But dosages are very important and never controlled in a rock and roll world ... ahh live fast, amazing, and die sorta old but not really. I'd take that life if I could go again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50am pacific standard simon:

99 years is a big jump.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50am bnowb:

REga makes amazing turntables I have a Pro-Ject table, I got it in 2015 Euro Turtable of year. It was very reasonable. Sounds great. I also have a sweet Chrome Magnus tube amp by Rogue. Its the bees knees.. AudioPhile Talk :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51am bnowb:

Vandersteen Speakers Series 3 ... Yessszzzzir :) My neighbors and the cops hate me.
  5:52am markr:

"Let Love Rule" was a great record. Speaking of turntables, I have that one on vinyl. You've made me want to play it again. A friend of ours played "I Build This Garden for Us" at our wedding!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53am bnowb:

Really I was ready to get mocked for Let Love Rule "love" lol but i Fn love that record. It was so great to see him do it live. Lol "do it live" .. it was though.. i was so hyped on that record. And Tom petty.. that was too much. Tom petty knew how talented Kravitz was right.. visionary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54am bnowb:

I build this garden was my favorite song. now I wanna Hear it lol
  5:54am markr:

I have a Hegel H80 amplifier, their bottom-of-the-line amp. A Danish company, I believe. Like the turntable, it's very minimalist in design and I love it. The audio guy told me to just leave it turned on all the time, it's actually better to have it warmed up. That was a new one on me.
  5:55am markr:

Lenny suffered from that malady of being too good and getting too popular too fast, and now it's fashionable to hate him. I have to admit I'm only familiar with his first couple records, after that I just kinda lost track.
