MONEYBAG$:

today I was checking out the recorded works of Don Ho on Spotify - the story could end right there - and came across MORNING DEW. but then was disappointed to find out it was different song entirely.

Very sad, Wm.'s passing. He had such a vibrant spirit!

Fox (Rā-chul):

Yeah, I'm rather sad about it as well. It's been really lovely hearing so many of the DJs playing their own tributes to him, here and there.

I like this, I play this style of clawhammer banjo.

i didn't know Wm. that well, but he made me feel very welcome at the station when i was first starting here & extremely intimidated by all the DJs who'd been here for decades. and he emitted nothing but a warm, prankster-y spirit & soul every time we subsequently crossed paths & hung out, which wasn't too often. like everybody else over here, i'm pretty crushed.

How old was William and was it a heart thing?

I've heard other versions of this song I can't remember who it's by though.

Wm. was 53. he'd had some health issues in the recent past, but we'd all hoped he was on the mend.

BEAVO:

The banjo is essentially a drone instrument so the Tambora is appropriate

My dad had a banjo when I was a kid but he never played it. I wish I had figured out how to make the thing work.

Sheesh I'm 58 I thought he was older than me! We're all hanging by a thread here!

jj: Yeah, there's been a whole lot written about his status as WFMU DJ, as music director, as his own music label, his band, his own music, etc... Like, even Fabio mentioned how Wm was encouraging to him when he first started.

I kind of knew most of that, but it wasn't evident in his manner enough to make him inaccessible or intimidating. He was my best friend at WFMU, even though I'm not a music geek and didn't know most of what he played at all, nor did I know about most of his horror movie references. He let me hang out with him during his shows a bunch, just because we were cool with each other. We'd always end up talking in his car parked across from my building for an extra 45 minutes after his show.

He was such a cool guy, in so many ways. Just.... really genuine and utterly himself.
