This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Listener comments!

Avatar 6:05pm Flash Strap:

Any early birds to tonight's show will get a hastily conceived pre-show Czukay set. RIP Holger Czukay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm listener james from westwood:

Was wondering why I was hearing some manner of pontiff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm listener james from westwood:

Tribute is a fine follow-up to Fabio's!
Avatar 6:16pm Flash Strap:

Hi james! yeah that was a hot sample for the groovy papists out there
Avatar 6:19pm Flash Strap:

this little set is just a small taste of my love for Czukay, for anyone who didn't hear it, allow me to recommend my 2015 Czukay show: wfmu.org...
Avatar 6:27pm Flash Strap:

gotta check out Fabio's
  6:40pm DL in LA:

Looks like Czukay had a knack for titles. Loved the Hollywood piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Evan and Explorers
...i'll only be hearing small passages at a time for a while (i'm still working)
...i have not forgotten your Holger Czukay program. it's the first thing i thought of after i heard he checked out, when i started thinking of tribute shows. i hope he heard it! or at least knew that he was well represented in this little world, at least. i wouldn't doubt that his music gets more airplay on wfmu than on any other radio station.
Avatar 6:42pm Flash Strap:

Hi DL! yeah that's one of his best in my opinion. that whole LP is, actually

Hi C! I bet that's true, that's a nice thought really. great to see you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm David D:

Thanks, Evan, this hour has been brilliant!
Avatar 6:56pm Flash Strap:

Hi David! Thanks man
Avatar 6:59pm Flash Strap:

ok in one minute we'll actually start the actual program
Avatar 7:00pm hyde:

aw, the Drummer mail didn't say anything about a hastily concieved pre-show!
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde, yeah it didn't occur to me until about one second before I just started doing it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar 7:05pm hyde:

that's no excuse! i demand a refund
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

Hello Explorers, ready to hear some more bleeps bloops and drones? this is the final of four installments dedicated to the women of electronic music
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

Pauline is so good
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

refund is already on its way, Hyde! just go out and wait by the mailbox, it's almost there now
Avatar 7:08pm hyde:

i think i posted this here maybe when she died, but Geeta Dayat's Pauline Oliveros obit is fantastic: frieze.com...
Avatar 7:09pm hyde:

oh good, i need beer money!
Avatar 7:10pm hyde:

actually while we're at it, her obit for Holger Czukay is also quite good www.vulture.com...
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

that is a really grand obit
  7:11pm MrFab:

I thought that if any good could come out of Czukay's death, it would be that Flash Strap will probly do a tribute...and I missed it!
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

ooh, i need to read that one too
Avatar 7:12pm hyde:

tho ack, it's Geeta Dayal not Geeta Dayat
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

Mr Fab! sorry about that!
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

@MrF: i linked to my previous Czukay show above, if you need a fix for later
  7:18pm MrFab:

thx, will certainly check that out.
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

this track is so bananas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm David D:

Avatar 7:29pm Little Danny:

Hiya Flash, all!
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD!

Yo man how you holdin' up now that Twin Peaks is over? I'm adrift
  7:40pm DL in LA:

Will your system let you do a caption on the top photo? Maybe a "clockwise from top left" type?
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

in the bottom image, the shapes on either side of the composition are the "drawn" sounds on the film stock, so you can see how cool the process is (I made that image btw sort of as an afterthought and now I really get a kick out of it)
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

DL: Oliveros, Eliane Radigue, Suzanne Ciani, Maggi Payne (small, inset), Cosey Fanni Tutti, Oram, Doris Norton, Delia Derbyshire
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm coelacanth∅:

okay i may steadily listen now; though i'll be cooking, and i'm in someone's house who wouldn't appreciate all this - so not quite loudly enough.

regarding identification, i tried to figure out who is who in the prior weeks' playlist pix as well...'never got them all.
Thanx for i.d.ing this one though.
  7:48pm DL in LA:

Cool, thanks for the names for the photo! And for making the bottom image!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm coelacanth∅:

is the bottom image Daphne? it's a fantastic picture! i came across it during my detective work last week and saved it to my desktop image folder!
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

you want a list for last week's image? that's no problem, C
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

That is Daphne at bottom indeed!
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

last week's: Wendy Carlos, Ruth White, Else Marie Pade, Patricia Escudero (maybe, no one knows), Clara Rockmore, Joanna Brouk
Avatar 7:56pm Little Danny:

@Flash: I've just been going through all of the episodes again. Not sure if it's the right psychic move for me or not!
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

@LD: the sound design is so good, that's what i miss the most now that it's over. I've never heard anything like this season's sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm listener james from westwood:

THE version of the theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Flash! i think i got most of them right but i can't check now; i gotta get cooking!
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

@LJ: agreed! to be honest, I'm no whovian but this is really one of the greatest themes for any show ever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm melinda:

Hi friends!
Avatar 8:03pm Little Danny:

I know, man, I know. DL has always been so attentive to sound design, but this season really transcended
Avatar 8:06pm Little Danny:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm melinda:

I vaguely remember The Tomorrow People, must have been reruns on PBS.
Avatar 8:08pm hyde:

this is great
Avatar 8:12pm Flash Strap:

Anthony Newley has such a weird voice, you can really hear Bowie taking influence from him on stuff like this
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

this is from a KPM library LP, credited to pseudonym "Li De La Russe"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm melinda:

What a great theme.
Avatar 8:25pm hyde:

the theme is by far the best thing about Dr Who
  8:28pm MrFab:

hyde those would be fightin words to Mrs Fab the Whovian!
Esp. the David Tennant years. She is to Dr Who what others are to Star Trek/Wars. (Or what we are to Twin Peaks.)
Avatar 8:28pm hyde:

huh, i never read the Dr Who comics. Dave Gibbons did a lot of the art, tht's pretty quality.
Avatar 8:30pm hyde:

@MrFab haha, i know a lot of people dig it. it was never my bag--i could never get into it even when i was a sci-fi/horror loving kid in the 70's. just didn't click.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm coelacanth∅:

i have seen 3-4 episodes of dr.who. (couldn't tell you which dr.) -i enjoyed it, but i wouldn't make a point to watch it.
i'm not into tv though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm coelacanth∅:

...i really like early star trek, but chronologically less and less until not at all. i have never had any interest in star wars - not even as a youngster when the first one hit...so i don't think star wars/trek should be lumped together!
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

this is the best voice!
Avatar 8:41pm hyde:

@coel i have seen some Star Trek marathons lately on a station that is old tv shows and catheter ads, and they are still hilarious and great.
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

god i love old Trek
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

to me, that's far and away the best Ciani track (Lixiviation), tho Orange Feet comes close
  8:47pm MrFab:

Yeah I don't even really consider the original Star Trek as serious sci-fi any more than the '66 Batman was proper superhero stuff - more like bugged-out '60s pop art. See also: The Munsters, Addams Family, Gilligan, My Mother the Car, all that surreal nonsense that died out by the '70s.
Avatar 8:47pm hyde:

i saw the one last week that's like an OK Corral remix. i thought the sets were amazing and abstract--looked it up, and turns out they just didn't have enough money for real sets.
Avatar 8:48pm still b/p:

About two minutes ago in the other room, Chekhov was jump-kicking his toes up to his outstretched hands...both legs at once! I don't know what else is going on in the story...not paying attention, but I think the Enterprise first-stringers are trying to mess with the minds of their foes.
  8:48pm DL in LA:

Really great show. Thanks for all the research!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm listener james from westwood:

Sounds like the second Harry Mudd episode where he's got a planet of robot women at his disposal and the crew is busy logicking them into fatal syntax errors.
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

Trek is definitely bugged-out '60s pop art (so is vintage Who), but it's also (at least in intent, or as a text) a pretty serious investigation of sci-fi concepts high and low, AS WELL AS basically a Horatio Hornblower adaptation. which is what makes it so crazy awesome
Avatar 8:50pm hyde:

@ljfw haha! where Spock breaks out the Cretan paradox
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

Hi B/P! T

hanks DL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Ike:

I've been quite a Whovian in the past, but it's hard to defend or explain since the quality has varied so wildly over the years. Of course Star Trek was sometimes like that too, but w/DW the tone could vary even more intensely. Some years (like the late 70s) it was goofy and sophomoric, others (early-to-mid-80s) it was morbid and doom-y. Early 80s DW had the best synth soundtracks.
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

Hi Ike!
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

*T - hanks, DL
Avatar 8:53pm hyde:

@Flash i have probably broke this out before, but for me though there's a lot that makes Trek great, what really makes it for me is the interplay between Shatner's ludicrous hammy acting style and Nimoy's brilliant portrayal of Spock. that dynamic for me is the key to the whole thing, whether hi or low concept.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm melinda:

@Flash agreed. When I was a kid I didn't appreciate what it was trying to do, and I think the 60s were too recent still for it to have retro aesthetic value, the art design looked ugly and stale. But I love it now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm melinda:

@hyde yes. In the Spock documentary he talks about how his character was somewhat more animated in the pilot, and became less so in response to Shatner's, for balance.
Avatar 8:56pm hyde:

oooh, this Doris Norton is really good
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

agreed Hyde, though - maybe I'm corny - but when i watch that stuff what really strikes me is how goood Shatner is in his pre-intentionally-kitsch phase. he's a joy to watch, and a powerfully committed performer, despite his obvious arrogance and other limitations
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm melinda:

I guess you could call it a Spockumentary.
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: it really really BANGS
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

re: Shat: ...I mean, he's obviously an asshole, and kind of a dummy, but I love to watch him dance his crazy Kirk dance, he's an athlete
Avatar 8:59pm hyde:

@melinda snicker. and i am not surprised to hear Nimoy's instincts as an actor had him make the right choice.
  9:00pm MrFab:

Oh no doubt Trek had serious sci-fi intent (unlike the deliberate parody of Batman or the Munsters), with heavyweight cats like Harlan Ellison writing for it. But then the camp aspect started attracting non-sci fi fans to it. I think it was Seinfeld who did a bit about how Kirk is the male fantasy: sitting in a big easy chair, watching his giant screen tv, a bevy of min-skirted babes waiting on him...
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

true true
Avatar 9:01pm hyde:

@Flash oh, i think Shatner is great in his way. it's just that his way is so over the top.
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

damn, this stuff is so righteous. Doris NORTON
Avatar 9:03pm Little Danny:

SO righteous. And totally new to me. Thanks Flash!
Avatar 9:05pm hyde:

man, i'd love to hear this John Adams Odd Salon talk on 145 audio formats gone obsolete in 100 years. here's his list: twitter.com...
Avatar 9:05pm Flash Strap:

she has quite a few releases, but I only know three of them, all very good
Avatar 9:05pm hyde:

@Flash the Personal Computer one esp. sounded aces
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

that's the best one that I've heard. all killer no filler
Avatar 9:09pm still b/p:

Work it out here: www.slapkirk.com
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

the image of Cosey Fanni Tutti above is possibly the most tame image of her ever captured. this is the original art and accompanying pamphlet to this release (nsfw): www.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

the pamphlet gives some extra context to the music, and includes a fairly touching tribute to Szabo, "the only photographer in the whole of my modelling experience that I ever respected and who respected all of his models"
Avatar 9:15pm hyde:

dang, i don't know this record either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm coelacanth∅:

this has been a most excellent cooking soundtrack. now it's an excellent eating soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm coelacanth∅:

(and i've just enjoyed reading the conversation about star trek!)
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: it's among her best I think

@C: very glad, very very glad
Avatar 9:19pm hyde:

@Flash i only kind of know the Throbbing Gristle material. but this is great.
Avatar 9:19pm Flash Strap:

it's hard to make all the language out, but it's basically a manifesto for radically-conscious, extremely sexualized performance art
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

she's also in a duo with Chris carter from Gristle, Chris & Cosey, that's done some great stuff
Avatar 9:23pm hyde:

yeah, i know a little of that too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm listener james from westwood:

Can confirm this has also been a superfine milk-and-cookies soundtrack! Ciani and Norton were both new to me!
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

listener james doin it right with milk and cookies! after-school snack-style!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm ἶkε:

This is great! As for Star Trek, the original is excellent but my favorite is DS9, which, like TNG, only got really good in the middle of its 2nd season. It's all up on Netflix (US). (Advice on which ones are so terrible that you MUST skip them available upon request!)
Avatar 9:39pm hyde:

i'm really gonna miss those two hour Fiveash shows, myself
Avatar 9:44pm Little Danny:

Just another astounding show, Flash. You make it look so easy
Avatar 9:46pm Flash Strap:

@Ike: DS9 really does have some incredible moments

@LD: thanks, pal. i always think you make it look easy! i always feel like i make it look like a low-grade panic attack
Avatar 9:48pm Little Danny:

For selfish reasons that's good to hear! I go through the same thing, believe me
Avatar 9:49pm Flash Strap:

haha i believe it. such is the life of the solitary dj
Avatar 9:50pm Flash Strap:

really good cover art: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:51pm Little Danny:

What year is it? It's 2017, and we're all setting off for the Cool Blue Flame next. Please join! wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:52pm Flash Strap:

what year is it

Avatar 9:53pm Flash Strap:

@ike: what do you think of the DS9 Tribbles episode?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm coelacanth∅:

there's a ds9 tribbles episode?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm melinda:

Low-grade Panic Attack would be a decent name for a show.
Avatar 9:57pm Flash Strap:

yeah, it's pretty insane. they travel back in time and are inserted into the OS Tribbles episode
Avatar 9:58pm Flash Strap:

and because Worf is with them they have to address the incongruity of appearance between Klingons. it's pretty fascinating
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm melinda:

The DS9 tribbles show is the only one I've seen. It was good.
Avatar 9:59pm Flash Strap:

me too! the only one i've seen, but i loved it
Avatar 9:59pm hyde:

thanks for the show and the whole amazing series!
