Hey all! I just copyedited a college textbook on the history of Western music that reproduced this score in full. Fits neatly on a page!
Avatar 2:57pm weinstein:

Cool. I thought it would be interesting to see it while listening.
Avatar 3:01pm fred:

Good afternoon David, Ruth, and listeners. Another favorite show seems to be coming
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm listener james from westwood:

The book actually comes with either a CD or a web link to samples or whole pieces, including this one, so the students will get that same benefit!
Avatar 3:02pm weinstein:

Hey Fred! Enjoy!
Avatar 3:05pm geezerette:

Hello,David and Ruth,and all!
So excited, love Terry Riley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm doctorjazz:

Hi Ridgewood folks!
Avatar 3:10pm weinstein:

Glad to have you all in for this one!
Avatar 3:11pm fred:

Hi geezerette! I just got the latest Juliana Hatfield record, and she seems to share your appreciation for the orange one, based on some track titles: "when you're a star", "Kellyanne", or "short-fingered man". I haven't listened to it yet, but I doubt the last one is flattering
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm doctorjazz:

Love this In C (Mantra)
Avatar 3:17pm fred:

I thought I should cut to the chase and favorite the whole show already
Avatar 3:17pm weinstein:

Some things are prettiest unpolished. And that naughty bass player!
Avatar 3:18pm weinstein:

Thanks, Fred. I'm trying to control my unbridled passion for this piece, what it means to me.
Avatar 3:19pm geezerette:

"Short-fingered Man", that's hilarious,Fred!
I'm actually drawing him now. Choosing ridicule over anger. Can't wait to hear that album.
Avatar 3:20pm geezerette:

Absolutely LOVE this!
Avatar 3:21pm geezerette:

and it's making me laugh.
  3:22pm from Quebec:

love this version. Besides Boudreau the other well-known member of this ensemble is Raôul Duguay. Here's his "big hit" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuOScxcmqNo
Avatar 3:24pm weinstein:

Thanks, Quebec. I've long wondered what this scene was really like. They could be either liberated academics or dedicated stoners.
Avatar 3:24pm fred:

@geezerette: she put the lyrics on her bandcamp, I don't think he'd like them much: julianahatfield.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm doctorjazz:

Love the electronic, hazy sound they get (acoustically, I presume?)
  3:28pm from Quebec:

yes, or both!
Avatar 3:29pm weinstein:

It's recorded more like a rock band than a classical ensemble.
Avatar 3:30pm geezerette:

Fred, she nailed him! He's especially repulsive to women.
Avatar 3:31pm fred:

What I love about In C is that it can be played by any kind of ensemble, and even though I know it's In C quickly, I still don't know how it will unfold. A different kind of balance between improvisation and written down music
Avatar 3:32pm geezerette:

David, exactly! The spirit of the times is absolutely encoded in it. Very Sargeant Pepper and that's a complement. Disciplined anarchy.
Avatar 3:34pm weinstein:

I love how badly it can be roughed up and still succeed, but also how cool it is when you follow the rules exactly.
Avatar 3:34pm northguineahills:

Dig this version....
Avatar 3:36pm fred:

Speeking of rock bands, I like Acid Mothers Temple's version. Which isn't saying much, because I liked all the versions I've heard (that's why I don't want to hear the Ensemble Intercontemporain play it. They could fumble this)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Uncle Michael:

Terry Riley is another person from whom I'm one degree of separation, owing to my oft-lauded uncle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar 3:38pm geezerette:

David@3:34: That's my definition of genius; working in a conscious, disciplined way io achieve free-fall.
Avatar 3:39pm geezerette:

UM, who's your uncle?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Uncle Michael:

Bob's yer uncle!

No, wait...this guy:

(he's not really a television producer, but whatever)
Avatar 3:41pm glenn:

who's your daddy? [couldn't help myself]
Avatar 3:44pm geezerette:

OMG! I knew Craig Kauffman! I know all about this! No kidding, six degrees!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Uncle Michael:

How cool!
Avatar 3:47pm geezerette:

Craig was so proud of that! And he was just a kid then. He really loved Jazz, and he was probably a genius but he was just a guy.
Avatar 3:48pm weinstein:

@Fred, I understand, it is possible to ruin anything if you are narrow enough.
Avatar 3:49pm northguineahills:

Groovy, UM!
Avatar 3:51pm weinstein:

OK, I'm catching up on this Uncle Michael gossip.... the guy started Other Minds too with Amirkhanian. Cool lineage...
Avatar 3:51pm geezerette:

UM, seriously, I'm stunned! So happy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Uncle Michael:

I'll have to ask Jim if Craig was part of the carload that, along with Doug's friend, drove up to Toronto for the Massey Hall concert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah, David. I actually made it out to OM once before Jim transitioned to Emeritus status.
Avatar 3:55pm geezerette:

That would be great to know. Never heard that story.

Other Minds,wow.
Avatar 3:59pm geezerette:

David, so interesting, this is completely different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Uncle Michael:

One of my uncle's Oberlin jazz friends back in '53 or so was a townie, not a student. He was part of a road trip to go see Parker at Massey Hall. 30 years later, Doug put that guy on the air at Oberlin...gave him a show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Uncle Michael:

Riley's in a film Jim made about Pandit Pran Nath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Uncle Michael:

This is as lovely an "In C" as I've ever heard.
Avatar 4:04pm geezerette:

Really,UM, you are insanely lucky to come from a family like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, but Jim's as much family "like that" as I've got. He's unique.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm doctorjazz:

This Africa Express version is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Uncle Michael:

Ain't it??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm melinda:

Hi people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar 4:12pm weinstein:

I decided to put this show together because I was surprised how many Riley and In C fans I met didn't know these versions.
Avatar 4:12pm geezerette:

Yes, I had a relative like that too. Know what you mean.

Yeah, this is gorgeous!
Avatar 4:14pm weinstein:

Hi, Melinda. Welcome to the C dive!
Avatar 4:15pm northguineahills:

Punneriffic, David!
Avatar 4:15pm fred:

This one got quite a lot of airplay, but usually not in full. It does ignore some rules, but then again it was on Transgressive Records
Avatar 4:16pm geezerette:

Avatar 4:17pm weinstein:

Yeah, who ever plays 40 minute tracks?
Avatar 4:18pm fred:

@ngh: this is Doug's stream
Avatar 4:19pm weinstein:

Yeah, Fred. I can't keep up with the master, but I dare try on occasion.
Avatar 4:30pm fred:

I have this one, and of course love it
Avatar 4:32pm weinstein:

I think this one, and the Darmstadt project folks annual, is what launched the ongoing fascination that continues to this day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm melinda:

Digging the C.
Avatar 4:33pm fred:

Recording engineer (music mix): Irene Trudel
Avatar 4:37pm weinstein:

This mix does make it possible to pick out the individual modules better than most, and that is satisfying.
Avatar 4:37pm geezerette:

Avatar 4:38pm northguineahills:

I saw bang on a can play in C in 2000 at BAM, t'was nice...
Avatar 4:42pm weinstein:

Occasionally you see concept versions (I won't say gimmicky) for all keyboards, all voices, all strings. Still works.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm doctorjazz:

Gotta run, really enjoyed, thanks, David!
Avatar 4:49pm weinstein:

Thanks, Doctor!
Avatar 4:50pm fred:

Wu Man was also in that band. I love her music
Avatar 4:52pm weinstein:

Wu Man, yes indeed. Fabulous.
Avatar 4:53pm geezerette:

Fantastic show,David. Thanks!
Avatar 4:54pm weinstein:

Thanks Gzette, hope you got some good drawings out of this!
Avatar 4:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Hi, here comes endlessly self-referential sound collage, from 5-7pm ET right away right here! Follow me: wfmu.org...
Avatar 4:55pm geezerette:

Think I did. Music absolutely a part of that :)
Avatar 4:56pm weinstein:

In C into Kenzo, perfecto.
Avatar 4:58pm fred:

Thanks so much David, those three versions were a good sample of the endless diversity of In C
Avatar 4:58pm weinstein:

Pleasure, Fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm listener james from westwood:

Excellent choices, David and Ruth; many thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Ruth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm rbx:

I only caught the end, but the Bang On A Can version of In C was new to me and is fantastic, thanks!
Avatar 4:59pm weinstein:

Thanks all, learned a lot!
Avatar 4:59pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Beginning soon...wfmu.org...
Avatar 6:18am KP:

Thanks for this David. In a public posting i inadvertently attributed to Kurt, who had announced it. I'm glad he did! Also, when i turned this on my stereo, i already had it playing on my iphone. Since the latter was a touch ahead, there was a surround sound effect that seemed made for the recordings. I recommend it. Anyway, thanks again.
