Drove past Hoffman's many times when my kid was going to school up there. Glad to know that it is as fine a purveyor of quality items as it always looked.

Wait, don't tell me...it's a bra made from a slice of pizza...
  3:05pm
Laura L:

A good example of just one reason I never wear a pizza bra--it's inadequate to the task.

Went to see "The Glass Castle" at the Lyceum in Red Hook last night (next to Hoffman's). Looks like one of the Mom's paintings from the movie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm
Parq:

Ah, Steely Dan. Speaking of schools in that area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm

Barrytown is the name of a teeny town south of Annandale. There was once a famous monastery there. The Moonies own it now.

from the bass riff and rim tapataps I thought this was gonna be Karen Kuhls, mash up of Very Good Year with White Rabbit

Enjoying today's program thus far. I will not ask for my money back...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm

Jaki, like Sun Ra and Don Pullen, offers an encyclopedia of jazz history in every solo performance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
coelacanth∅:

cool. i'll welcome a blues show for sure.
  3:49pm
Mark R:

Matt Fiveash was playing some Buddy Guy about an hour ago that was tasty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
Michael 98145:

Matt did a fine job
  3:50pm
Mark R:

Yeah I agree--funky enough for the Duane Train audience but with his own spin on it.
Avatar 3:51pm
Carmichael:

I've seen Buddy Guy twice in the last three years. Took him about 30 seconds each time to start dropping the F bomb. If I did my math right, he should be 83 years old.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
Parq:

Fiveash's show always is a blues show, in a manner of speaking, but i know what you man. Cee Dub @ 3:31, titled "White Year" or "A Very Good Rabbit"?
  3:52pm
Mark R:

Yep he can still play though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm

i practically never hear Matt's show, because of work.

Carmichael:

The internet says there were 26 episodes, so ya Ken you're on track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
Irwin:

As I clarified, Wilson's tenure as host spanned 26 eps, but he did not host ep. 22.
Avatar 4:20pm
Carmichael:

It also says Bob and Ray subsequently hosted an "untold" # of shows. Interesting idea ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
Irwin:

Tim Hardin can tear your heart out. Does that make him an icon of vampire-folk?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm

Boy, the kids must have gone wild for Bret Morrison. Probably put Ultimate Spinach over the top.
  4:25pm

Really, it's a little embarrassing. Asking Grampa what he thinks of this new "rock" music all the youngsters love.

"Burn and rob, burn and rob, rock and roll music made me burn and rob."

i think it odd that Tom had this particular guest....and then it turns out Bret's close-minded to the music Tom plays. he's not going to give it a chance.

And this is "wild and wooly".

Carm: Before Tull, you mean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm

And Tom, that was NOT a blues.
Avatar 4:29pm
Carmichael:

He he ... yeah, WAY before. And the flautist stood on his own two feet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
Parq:

Not to get so cranky as to take this too seriously, but there is just about no critical comment more meaningless than saying a certain kind of music you don't like "all sounds the same." Here's a news flash - every genre of music there is, and the music of every artist in existence, all sounds the same to people who don't like it. Name your favorite genre or performer; now find someone who doesn't like it/him/her/them and you can bet the rent money that person thinks it all sounds the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Irwin:

Parq: I wonder if Wilson, tho outwardly polite, was cringing during this interview?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Passaic River Blues:

@coelacanth: right. I mean, it's not like people were banging down Bret's door in 1968, and Tom is playing him the sweetest, most anodyne pop and Bret's still like, "I wanna hear the Andrews Sisters!"
Avatar 4:32pm
Jeff:

Who knows what banality lurks in the hearts of men?

why didn't Tom play "sister ray" for Bret Morrison's critique?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm

Ever see Gene Simmons with Totie Fields on the Douglas show? Historic encounter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
coelacanth∅:

someone i knew years ago told me she saw Iggy interviewed on a tv show, and when the host asked him what he's been up to, Iggy said something like " oh just sucking and licking mostly." i'd like to find footage of that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
Parq:

I remember reading a while back that there's a series of print ads out there in which Iggy endorses -- not making this up -- a line of shirts.

Speaking of which, Sabu hasn't returned my last two calls. Hope he's OK. Will keep trying.

Tony Bourdain visited Iggy once on his newest series. He laughed that Iggy was selling cadillacs, is a vegetarian and rarely drinks.

This might be the last of the paintings from Hoffman's. Or could be one more. Can't recall if I shot five or six. [Insert Dirty Harry ref here.]
  5:09pm
Laura L:

Aw, maybe try that lady who's Sabu's agent and ask her if he's feeling better? One year Connie was performing at the San Gennaro Feast in my neighborhood--that's coming right up in Sept...
  5:10pm

irwin, is your lee morgan stuff in stereo or mono
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm

Classic Morgan set with Blakey, Tyner, McLean, Fuller, Cranshaw. All-star lineup.

Bill - dunno. From various sources. Prob. mostly stereo, tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm

you'd be surprised. a lot of the old blue note/impulse stuff that i own from cd does draw from mono masters
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm

Donald Byrd is up there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
Michael 98145:

loving this bent knee
  5:26pm
Jeff:

Bent knee have a bit too much of an Evanescence vibe for my liking
  5:28pm

Byrd is right up there and so is dizzy, but it depends. You have really fast guys like lee and don and dizzy, and then you have guyd like Bill Dixon and Miles, where it is more about carving out space
Avatar 5:28pm

This Trummors tune is rather awesome.

Saw Bent Knee Live a few years back. They're more like King Crimson than Evanescence
Avatar 5:29pm

Freddie Hubbard played out of tune a good deal. Trumpet is a difficult instrument. Dizzy Gillespie was probably the best bop trumpeter, IMO. (All the Charlie Parker sides...)

The difference is that scaring the shit out of children with a guy with a bayonet through his back is a worthwhile pursuit, while scaring the shit out of African-Americans with terrifying celebrations of Confederate bullshit is not. (Also, the guy with the bayonet through his back is Polish, so insert Polish joke here.)
