The Great Eclipse Cop-Out of 2017!

Was all positioned in a great spot leading up to the peak eclipse, then a storm comes from all the humidity and clouds it over! That's Nature for ya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Matt from Springfield:

Though I did manage to catch some filtered and unfiltered shots leading up to it. And I'll have a story to tell!

Hiya Scott and Moon-Children!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm The Oscar:

My office went in on bulk eclipse glasses. Only sixtysomething percent coverage up here in MA, but still nifty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Matt from Springfield:

Very appropriate song :) Very awesome song in any case :D

Raining here, no eclipse.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm listener james from westwood:

Mostly clear skies in northern NJ, so I headed out with my colander at the appointed moment. A cloud passed over it briefly at its max so I snapped a pretty good pic of it. Will have to do until, what, 2024, but still better than the 100% overcast weather we had for the '79 one!

George Martin produced the orig recording of this--there weren't any quality didgeridoos in England at that time, so he got 8 upright basses to give the pulsating, bass twang feel. He was an amazing problem solver.

My three nieces were just in Nashville for the youngest one's bachelorette party. A different kind of eclipsing.
Avatar 3:22pm JakeGould:

And kudos to the woman in Washington Square Park who was selling eclipse glasses for $75 (!!!) a piece but then “dropped” them to $20 a piece when totality happened.

Digging the Simpsons reference. There was also a Peanuts that had Lucy (on an ordinary day) putting on sunglasses and shrieking "It's eclipsing, it's eclipsing!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Matt from Springfield:

Did he say "WTTG in Washington"? Long before it became our Fox station, it was one of the first TV stations in the U.S. in the '40s, founded by Thomas T. Goldsmith (TTG).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Matt from Springfield:

He also invented the "Cathode-ray tube amusement device" in 1947, appearing the earliest in the possible "first video game" list. You'd have to define what a "video game" is, but his was considered the first "interactive electronic game".

Avatar 4:15pm geezerette:

Scott, you can leave your hat on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Matt from Springfield:

I should see NRBQ live then. I too have mixed feelings about them.

They did a great stint as the "house band" of The Simpsons in the late 90s with some original songs ("Mayonnaise and Marmalade", anyone?). And I feel they were on other shows like "Eek! The Cat" as well. But on the one hand NRBQ seem clever and Zappa-like, on the other they seem unfocused and all over the place. But I'd like to see them play and find out what they're about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm ! I X Key !:

Avatar 4:19pm JakeGould:

In agreement on NRBQ. But not for me overall. Respect those that respect them.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm doctorjazz:

I saw NRBQ for the first time last night; not that well versed in the band, so don't know the lyrics that well (I can't make them out live-struggle off records. Maybe that's how I wound up getting into jazz, don't have to worry about them). Musically, though, they are spot on, lots of changes in the music, rock n roll with jazz (MONK!!!) and country blended in, and Terry Adams is fun to watch. I had a good time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Matt from Springfield:

I should run outside and get some for my hair.

The Dragon swallowing the Moon is prob a Chinese/East Asian myth of the eclipse, while in India two halves of a split serpent are responsible. Rahu and Ketu are considered "shadow planets" along with the other 7 classical planets Sun, Moon and Mercury through Saturn.

Their Navagraha astrology is pretty interesting, they have a whole set of myths apparently created to explain the sometimes unusual astronomical observations.

Scott Williams your show is amazing; so is your guitar playing. Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Carmichael:

@Matt: no, it's just some generic eclipse shot.
Avatar 5:01pm Jeff:

The welding mask thing is dangerous - while welding masks are indeed designed to dim glare and block the invisible wavelengths which can also cause eye damage, apparently most welding masks of a practical darkness for welding aren't dark enough for sun viewing. NASA's site says only "Shade 12" or darker welding masks are likely to be safe - and that probably the fairly rare Shade 13 would be optimal.
