  11:21am J.D.:

Michael, please ask Mike how he feels about getting a co-write credit for Good Vibrations for coming up with "I'm picking up good vibrations/she's giving me excitations"? Ironic that Brian decided to include it on the new version of SMiLE enabling his cousin to share in the profits for an album he disparaged whenever he could.
  11:23am J.D.:

In my opinion, Good Vibrations was a separate and complete work; the bridge between Pet Sounds and SMiLE. I wish Brian (or the record company) did not include it on SMiLE.

The Mike Love character... Is he controversial? Maybe I'll listen in, and find out?

Loving the sounds! Hi!

JD - I'm not sure I understand you? Do you think Mike does NOT deserve co-writing credit for writing one of the main hooks of song of the song?

  11:30am J.D.:

Michael, no, I don't expect you to ask him that. I just wanted to make a point and have it out there for you and my fellow listeners to ponder. Being a fan of the Beach Boys from the beginning - yes, I was a huge Beach Boys fan growing up in Brooklyn in the '60s, my dislike for Mike Love has grown organically through the years.
  11:32am Zev:

When you get a chance, check out the Paul Gayten version of "Music Goes Round..." It really kicks ass

I don't think so.

  12:07pm paul:

What did Pippen do without Jordan?
  12:08pm paul:

My problem with ML is that he sings in a band called the Beach Boys that doesn't include a Wilson.
Avatar 12:09pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@medson: Best cinematic use of "Me and The Boys" has to be in "Shakes The Clown"!
  12:10pm andy fuchs:

As much as they respect and laud one another, Brian's work with Van Dyke Parks (amongst others) was equally awsome. Maybe because M: has been such a douche publicly, we tend to not want to like him...
  12:11pm BEAVO:

He wrote the lyrics to California Girls and Good Vibrations go figure.
  12:12pm medson:

@topt I'll have to check that out. Never saw that movie.
Avatar 12:12pm mb:

Looking forward to this interview. The Beach Boys was the first concert I went to as a toddler...
  12:13pm BEAVO:

Young Brian was the best lead singer. IMHO.
Avatar 12:13pm Joe B:

Please ask Mike Love what he thinks of the absurd lengths Brian obsessives go to in an effort to minimize his contributions to the Beach Boys.
Avatar 12:13pm Michael Shelley:

Andy - that's fine - but I'm not talking about not liking Mike, I'm talking about denying his artistic contributions
  12:16pm BEAVO:

Screw those haters Micheal, he's a living legend and a big score interview. Thanks.
  12:17pm BEAVO:

Jeff is great.
  12:18pm andy fuchs:

He does have contributions Mike, no doubt. I just wish he was less ya-know, not likable ;)
  12:18pm BEAVO:

The version on Live In London is great too
  12:19pm paul:

@andy Well put
Avatar 12:20pm Michael Shelley:

mb- me too
andy - me too
  12:20pm J.D.:

I was at a BB gig in the early '80s at Westbury Music Fair. Carl wasn't there, but everyone else was. Mike was making fun of Brian for the entire gig, and I wasn't happy about that. Bruce actually came over to me mid-song, and I told him what I felt about Mike goofing on Brian. He made some excuses for Love's behavior, we shook hands and he went back on stage.
  12:22pm andy fuchs:

Considering what Brian went through, his "recovery" is nothing short of awesome. To make fun of anyone (as JD said) in that situation is reprehensible and further supports my contention he's a DB.
  12:24pm paul:

ML is 76! So I will cut him some slack.
  12:28pm andy fuchs:

paul: I don't know about you, but the older I get the more mellow I get and the more sensitive and forgiving I became. There are too many things in life a heck of a lot more important than treating a lifelong friend (and relative) like that. If it wasn't for the Beach Boys, what would Mike Love have become and be doing for a living ?
  12:30pm paul:

@Andy. I agree. I would never condone that. I won't cut him that much slack.
  12:30pm BEAVO:

There's a picture of Brian in the store in his bathrobe.
Avatar 12:31pm Joe B:

"than treating a lifelong friend (and relative) like that. " oh please. that episode reported above was nearly 40 years ago. they got on fine on the 50th anniversary tour
  12:32pm paul:

So, who gives 1967 – Sunshine Tomorrow a thumbs up or a thumbs down. I don't have it yet.
Avatar 12:33pm Joe non Papa:

I was looking at the Kickstarter billboard page. It looks like WFMU made its goal.
  12:34pm Hubadoo:

I got it and love it. Total thumbs up. Their version of I Was Made To Love Her is a real treat.
  12:37pm Rob Foss:

I agree on 67 Sunshine, huge thumbs up. Sounds jump out at you that you never heard before!
  12:41pm mike east:

Great interview Michael!
Avatar 12:43pm Joe B:

Murry is like Col. Parker and Brian Epstein in that yes he made awful business decisions once his act got big, but it also wouldn't have happened without him
  12:45pm SeanG:

good point Joe B!
Avatar 12:46pm Michael Shelley:

Andy - interesting question - but I honestly think you could turn it around - Brian has talent on a scale that is unbelievably unique - off the charts - but he's also an introvert, and without cousin Mike's ambition and extroverted-ness and ear for hooks, it could be argued that Brian would have not achieved pop success.
  12:47pm Dean:

One of my brother's buddies worked with the BB as a young adult, pretty much right out of college, during the "Kokomo" years. The kid died, sadly, just a few years later. Real gregarious guy.

And read the Tony Wilson book too!!
  12:55pm J.D.:

If you ever get a chance to interview Paul McCartney or Blondie Chaplin, ask them how they feel about Mike Love.
  12:56pm Behemoth-Cat:

AHAHAHAH this is brilliantly fun to hear them goof about
  #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 12:57pm DennisK:

Great interview, Mike. Just wanted to add my 2cents with one observation: I once traveled from the corner of Mt. Vernon & Fairway in Inglewood (the site of the old Love family home), and then drove to W 119th Street in Hawthorne (the Wilsons's home) - the contrast explains a great deal of the psychology of the animosity Murry held against the Loves
  #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 12:58pm DennisK:

The Love home was a palace, which the dad lost after his business went south - you can imagine Mike saying "That's never going to happen to me, if I can help it."
Avatar 12:58pm glenn:

hate the scripted banter.
  12:58pm Dean:

Murry eventually moved inland to Whittier, where he died.
  12:59pm SeanG:

that was fun!
  #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 12:59pm DennisK:

And Murry resented driving back to crummy Hawthorne after those Xmas visits to the Loves's
