Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Listener comments!

Avatar 9:11pm Little Danny:

Hi everybody. We can probably expect one or two Internet outages this week. It shouldn't be nearly as bad as last week's show. Nonetheless, I deeply apologize for this ongoing nonsense. In better news, we are getting new Internet service at the house beginning tomorrow (Friday). So this situation will hopefully be shortly and finally rectified. Thanks so much for your patience and listenership!

  10:04pm MrFab:

No sweat Danny, after all you don't have pro radio studio and engineers at your disposal, just your laptop or sumthin right?
Avatar 10:06pm Little Danny:

Hey MrF! All true, but a reliable internet connection should be within reach of the reach of the average remote DJ in 2017. But thanks!
Avatar 10:07pm coelacanth∅:

heyyy Danny, MrFab, invisible commenters, commenters of cool blue future
Avatar 10:08pm hyde:

waving a brief hello to all of my friends
Avatar 10:08pm Little Danny:

Hola coel and hyde! Glad you swam ashore here.
Avatar 10:09pm hyde:

@LD i'm a 2 hour drive from NYC and my internet craps out all the time. so i feel your pain.
Avatar 10:11pm Little Danny:

@hyde: Thanks, mate! It was quite literally driving me mad last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm melinda:

hi gang
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Uncle Michael:

I'll be listening quietly over here in the corner.
Avatar 10:21pm Little Danny:

Melinda! Uncle Michael! I sensed a pleasant ripple in the air and there you both were
Avatar 10:32pm still b/p:

If the new connection brings happy reliability....It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for you...
And you're feeling good.
Avatar 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

i know how he feels...
  10:37pm MrFab:

Yep, if the mothership station gets knocked off the air/offline like what Superstorm Sandy did to it a few years ago, we'll be counting on shows like this. I say this because I saw today that they're predicting a major hurricane season this year...
Avatar 10:37pm Little Danny:

I will be living the lyrics of "Feeling Good" for at least a few days if everything comes through. Hi still b/p!
Avatar 10:39pm coelacanth∅:

since you offered; and since you're in texas - i have a question!
what is a "slide machine"?
...apparently it removes rocks and stuff from the roads (or at least it used to) and was used in the southern states in the us.
Avatar 10:42pm Little Danny:

Oh man I have no idea. Never heard it in the course of conversation. 13th Floor Elevators-related question?
Avatar 10:47pm geezerette:

Evenin'.Danny and neighbors.
Avatar 10:48pm Little Danny:

Helllllloooo geez! Delighted by your presence
Avatar 10:49pm coelacanth∅:

yes, i thought of it last night when Larry G playes some elevators songs; but i've tried to find out in the past. i've checked out the original (Powell St. John) song; i've used 2 search engines in both info and image mode, with all kinds of phrasing...nothing at all.
i'm just curious - as i'm always curious about big machines.
Avatar 10:50pm geezerette:

Thanks, & much obliged!
Avatar 10:50pm coelacanth∅:

hello g!
Avatar 10:51pm geezerette:

Avatar 10:51pm Little Danny:

@coel: It is weird that Roky sings "way down south they use a slide machine" or some such. It's so specific
Avatar 10:52pm coelacanth∅:

i'm thoroughly into this set
  10:52pm MrFab:

Don't know about slide machines..unless we're talkin Dinah Washington's song "Big Long Slidin' Thing." About a trombone, but of course.
Avatar 10:53pm geezerette:

what Coel said!
Avatar 10:55pm hyde:

uh oh
Avatar 10:56pm coelacanth∅:

well apparently it cleared big rocks off the roads; but Roky (& others who sang that song) hitched a ride on one, to try to get back to you!
it's one of my favorite elevators songs - even though it's not an elevators song.
Avatar 10:56pm geezerette:

Avatar 10:56pm hyde:

Avatar 10:56pm hyde:

hiya, g!
Avatar 10:57pm Little Danny:

That was some pure DJ bungling
Avatar 11:02pm Little Danny:

Uncle Michael: if you're checking this, can you remind me of Friday's line-up? Have you and Doug switched places yet?
Avatar 11:04pm Dano59:

I was playing around with a new guitar/amp rig and debating whether to put on some Flat Duo Jets records or tune in ... you won! Or maybe I won.
Avatar 11:05pm northguineahills:

Just picked up my car and am fully moved into my flat. T'will be fun unpacking this weekend!.
Avatar 11:06pm Dano59:

ngh: I find the Brainen/Shelley Saturday morning combo a great working around the house setup.
  11:07pm MrFab:

very Velvety drone, that Electronic Hole. Makes ya wonder how many other bands were doing the VU kinda thing that no one knows about.
Avatar 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

MrFab @10.37 is that true? i always thought remote shows were still routed through the station on their way into the world. i know nothing about these things though.
Avatar 11:10pm hyde:

UM and Doug are switching places? i don't believe in nuthin' no more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Doug Schulkind:

The azure flicker has entranced me yet again. Good evening Marfa Maestro!

It's true indeed. There is a Friday morning class I am required to take this fall. Uncle Michael has most graciously agreed to swap slots for the next four months.
Avatar 11:12pm Little Danny:

MrF: not that many other bands that I know of
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Doug Schulkind:

The Friday switcheroo will begin on September 1.
  11:13pm MrFab:

coel: Hmm, you may be right my fishy friend. Danny, does your show go thru the New Jersey studios, or just str8 outta your turntables?
Avatar 11:13pm Dano59:

There was a band of soldiers in Vietnam doing Velvets songs in the late '60s
Avatar 11:13pm still b/p:

There's going to be a swell family comedy movie about Doug and Uncle Michael switching places because of a magic spell or radio technology gone haywire.
Avatar 11:14pm Little Danny:

NGH and Dano! Pleasure.
Avatar 11:15pm Little Danny:

Yep, Dano. The Banana. They did "There She Goes Again."
Avatar 11:16pm Dano59:

the pleasure's ours. The Electrical Banana, feat. Dean Kohler of the Satellites. Just found a Dangerous Minds article.
Avatar 11:17pm Little Danny:

All remote DJs transmit to WFMU streaming servers first. Then out to the world from there.
Avatar 11:17pm hyde:

@Doug hmm. i dont handle change well. on the bright side, maybe i'll catch your show live occasionally on Friday afternoon the way i sometimes catch Hinky Dinky!
Avatar 11:17pm Dano59:

Damn, we've got that Aliens' Psychos Wild THings comp at our station. I don't have to steal *everything* off the internet apparently.
Avatar 11:21pm geezerette:

Sing it,Bird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Doug Schulkind:

What Little Danny failed to mention is that all remote DJs line their nether garments with aluminum foil and then bow to the East three times before every broadcast.
Avatar 11:23pm geezerette:

that's a low price to pay.
Avatar 11:24pm hyde:

need to go to sleep. farewell my friends
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Doug Schulkind:

See you bright and oily at 9am, Hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm melinda:

nite hyde. I should go to bed, but I'm on a staying up late roll.
Avatar 11:26pm Little Danny:

I reluctantly bid you adieu Hyde. 'Til next time.
Avatar 11:27pm Little Danny:

And we're all the better for it, Melinda!
Avatar 11:28pm coelacanth∅:

gnight hyde
Avatar 11:30pm coelacanth∅:

i'd like to go to sleep, but i have to darn my socks -while there's nobody here.
Avatar 11:32pm northguineahills:

Can't wait until I put together my shelves, unpack my records, and am able to play them again. I have an early morning tomorrow for my first day at work. Thanks LD!
Avatar 11:36pm coelacanth∅:

enjoy your new job ngh
  11:37pm MrFab:

Congrats and good luck NGH!
Helen Merrill ..DAMN, but those swingin jazz chicks had sexy voices. *splashes cold water on face* I may have mentioned this before but I live 2 doors down from Peggy lee's granddaughter, keeper of the estate.
Avatar 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

Wow! does she have any of those extraordinary genes?
Avatar 11:41pm geezerette:

Have a great day ,NGH!
  11:44pm MrFab:

Never heard her sing!
  11:46pm MrFab:

That last set would be the ideal soundtrack to Ry Cooder's fine book of fiction "Los Angeles Stories," which does indeed get into the post-war LA r'n'b scene.
Avatar 11:48pm Little Danny:

Oh shit, I've never heard of that. So you recommend it?
Avatar 11:49pm coelacanth∅:

hmm, yeah, 2 doors down.
... i used to hear my downstairs neighbor singing in the shower. it was beautiful. when they told me they were moving out i said i'd miss the singing. she seemed genuinely surprised that i'd heard her.
i wish i'd recorded it, for samples!
  11:49pm MrFab:

Yes, you'd really like it Danny .
Avatar 11:50pm Little Danny:

That's fantastic, coel. I can totally imagine it.
Avatar 11:50pm Little Danny:

Thanks MrF!
Avatar 11:52pm geezerette:

"Baby, Your Prasing is Bad", hilarious title!
Avatar 11:55pm coelacanth∅:

ha! followed by "she has funny cars"...
Avatar 11:55pm geezerette:

Another great show DJ Danny!
( I'm going into rehab for exclamation point abuse. )
Avatar 11:55pm Dano59:

i've had my own network ins and outs tonight, but as always enjoying what I'm hearing...
Avatar 11:58pm Dano59:

TJB a midwest band right?
Avatar 11:59pm Little Danny:

British, Dano!
Avatar 11:59pm coelacanth∅:

no g! THIS is ! abuse!!!
Avatar 11:59pm still b/p:

Good-a-good show, just right spot-hitting and surprises for the things I was doing and the nothings I was doing. Thanks!
Avatar 12:01am geezerette:

coel, guilty of the oft used triple myself. (!) :)
Avatar 12:01am coelacanth∅:

Thanks Danny! most excellent!
good night comrades
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am melinda:

Loved the Frogs. Thanks, LD!
