A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I have probably listened to this song once a fortnight since Trouble played it last Singles Going Steady. I don't care if McLaren was a titanic asshole--this is so good.

@Steveo: Quip acquitted nicely.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am The Oscar:

Is it time yet to reevaluate Malcolm McLaren? Despite being, by all accounts, a terrible person, his impact on both punk and dance is pretty incalculable.
  9:11am Bill W:

G'morning, Trouble! I visited M McLaren's grave in London last fall (not far from Karl Marx's in Highgate). RIP Glen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Itzall Ablurr:

Good morning, Trouble!
  9:12am karen eliot:

good morning! glen sang such sad songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am The Oscar:

True fact: the writer of this song would later appear as a crazy old poet in a French maid's uniform in Harmony Korine's TRASH HUMPERS.
  9:13am John in Bklyn:

Why can't HE give her the good life?!
  9:14am neanderthalhead:

That Campbell track was Scott Walker-esque.
  9:14am Bill W:

Beyond his means...
  9:14am John in Bklyn:

I mean, if he has the self-awareness to notice all that.
  9:15am John in Bklyn:

Lineman didn't make good coin in Wichita, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Itzall Ablurr:

John, I always took that line to mean that he was extremely appreciative of what she "had" before "giving it up" for a life with... him. An humble statement, in my opinion- she probably DID have a very, very good life with him. Too serious for the morning?
  9:15am John in Bklyn:

What's a lineman anyway?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Itzall Ablurr:

Haha. Thanks, John. I'm still pretty wound up after the commute and lyrical analysis and deconstruction has such a calming effect on me. Well, that and a few more cups of office coffee.
Avatar 9:21am Trouble:

bonjour sugarwolf!
a lineman checks the rail lines to make sure they are passable for trains, i imagine. example: "if it snows that stretch down south won't stand the strain."
if we evaluated every artists or musician by their asshole quotient there would be very few that make the cut. malcolm was a huge innovator, and a super jerk. those two are not mutually exclusive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am melinda:

@Passaic hope you have a swell time!
  9:22am paul:

A lineman works on telephone lines.
  9:22am Bill W:

I always thought he was a telephone lineman...
Avatar 9:22am glenn:

nope. a lineman works on the power lines. essentially an electrician.
Avatar 9:22am Trouble:

btw, until 8:59 i had no idea the opening set would start so heavy. the total eclipse of the heart must be guiding me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am melinda:

What did McLaren do to deserve the asshole/jerk rep? I've always heard he is one but don't know the details.
  9:23am John in Bklyn:

I used to think he was a lineman on a football team!
  9:23am neanderthalhead:

"Still on the line" suggests phone lines, but electrical is possible.
  9:23am Bill W:

"I hear you singin' in the wire..."
  9:23am paul:

I will defer to glenn.
  9:24am paul:

But Bill makes a good point.
  9:24am neanderthalhead:

Jimmy Webb wrote some fine tunes, that's for sure.
Avatar 9:25am Trouble:

indeed, it is about telephone poles. and some other very cool things...
  9:25am neanderthalhead:

Phone lines - what a quaint notion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am melinda:

I assumed lineman was a rail thing, too. Maybe because there's a stronger tradition of train songs than phone repair ballads, but I'm terrible w/lyrics so I'm sure I missed the obvious cues.
  9:26am paul:

Telephone lines. Final answer.
Avatar 9:26am Trouble:

today's fab art work is by Etel adnan, a lebanese-american poet, and visual artist
  9:27am paul:

Thanks for clearing that up, Trouble.
  9:28am John in Bklyn:

The sad part is, he left the Everyday Housewife for Tanya Tucker.
Avatar 9:28am glenn:

the phone line metaphor definitely works better than a metaphor about 600 volts a.c.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am The Oscar:

@melinda I think a lot of it has to do with the way he handled the Sex Pistols, taking the lion's share of the credit (he claimed "Johnny Rotten" and "Sid Vicious" were characters he created), trying to keep milking it after the band split, exploiting Sid's death, etc. Also, his "concept" behind Bow Wow Wow was decidedly skeezy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Adrian in London:

Good morning/afternoon all…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am The Oscar:

That said, I DO think he deserves a lot of credit for getting the Pistols started and dominating the media. I feel like his and Lydon's accounts are sort of a Rashomon-type thing, and we may never actually know who was responsible for what.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am steveo:

Was Campbell a jerk too? Is that why he only got a one-track tribute and it was a creepy, dated take on housewives?
Avatar 9:42am bobdoesthings:

  10:01am Listener Gregory:

An important part of Glen Campbell's legacy is his TV show, which I watched as a tot. It brought some high quality country and folk music to the masses, which was unusual at the time. And yes, his hair was awesome. I knew that even then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am steveo:

the other HH track(s?) were there before...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am melinda:

That hair represents counterculture gone mainstream (a conservative variant of 'long' hair). Seems like a lot of country musicians in the 70s had some variation of it.
  10:06am Itzall Ablurr:

melinda, when even Elvis the "P" had long hair, you KNEW the trend was dead. And I loved that guy, but he was seriously out of step toward the end of his days.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am melinda:

@Itzall yeah. As a kid, late Elvis was the only Elvis I knew, and didn't understand why everyone thought he was so great.
Avatar 10:19am Trouble:

thanks @listener gregory & @steveo. i also kept myself guessing in that opening set. 5 hours of sleep is NOT enough to do early morning radio
Avatar 10:20am Serpico:

this is indeed the modern world with lots of trouble :)
Avatar 10:21am bobdoesthings:

ugh 5 hours is not enough for anything... I tried to get a full 8 hours last night but I think my cat was onto my plan and decided to start knocking things off my desk to wake me up at 5:50 am... ughhh.. but the jokes on him I meditated and went on a long early morning walk in the park to compensate.
Avatar 10:22am Serpico:

@Trouble it is recommended that adults have at least 7 hours of sleep per day..at least that's what i heard :)
Avatar 10:23am fm Mike:

Ohhhhhhhh this is Howlin' Wolf!
Avatar 10:23am glenn:

i read an article yesterday that says there's 35,000 elvis impersonators in the world. that seems low to me.
Avatar 10:26am fm Mike:

Avatar 10:28am Serpico:

probably 35,000 elvis "costello" impersonators. elvis presley impersonators should be higher.
Avatar 10:31am Trouble:

5 hours is NOT my usual fair, I am a huge fan of sleeping! I try for minimum of 7, and am not afraid of 9. my own damn fault, went to bed late and then read for over an hour. lost in a book, that's my defense...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Priscilla:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Adrian in London:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Priscilla:

These country songs keep bringing up the image of Ruth Langmore from Ozark.
Avatar 10:36am Serpico:

or perhaps those are only one half of the elvisi. there 50's era elvis and then comeback elvis so the article may have only included one type.
  10:38am Itzall Ablurr:

Where are the "Jim Dandy Mangrum" impersonators (besides David Lee Roth, I mean)?!? It is TIME.
