george was on basketball jones and now this. did he die again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 3:16pm coelacanth∅:

- maybe he's alive again
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 3:21pm coelacanth∅:

blckdgrd i can't even guess what my most listened to album would be. i shoulda been keeping track.
...all things must pass must be in the top 50 though, which means A LOT; + i regularly play certain songs on the jukebox in the pub.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 3:21pm Cecile:

this might be my favorite Neil Young album.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 3:22pm TDK60:

I remember this Young guy, he was in Buffalo Springfield.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 3:24pm coelacanth∅:

it's tough - between on the beach, everybody knows this is nowhere & zuma. i like this one best from a lyrics standpoint.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 3:25pm TDK60:

Isn't "On The Beach" supposed to be the very hippest, for those in-the-know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 3:27pm coelacanth∅:

it is? 'no way i would know.
  Thu. 7/27/17 3:27pm cat:

hey bronwyn bishop are you psyched fabio played the song you requested on brian's show this week?
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 3:27pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

[crawls under the door, finds empty stool, orders a pint of something dark, slowly evaporates from view...]
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 3:27pm fred:

I think my most listened to record is Nisennenmondai's Fan. There's only one track there, so maybe it counts as a single (over 35 minutes though)
Then again it could be Juliana Hatfield's "Become what you are". Less often, but for far longer
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 3:28pm Cecile:

back in the day it was seen as a minor, inferior album. But then I heard someone covering For The Turnstiles, invested a buck in a copy, and never regretted it.
  Thu. 7/27/17 3:30pm cat:

and he made tommy chong the first song after his theme, a place of honor, to celebrate him getting freed from prison after being jailed by the USA for selling bongs. from now on you should write "chong and cheech"
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 3:31pm TDK60:

Angels of Light is a side project of the Swans, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 3:33pm coelacanth∅:

jeez i can't imagine that. "see the sky about to rain" is the weakest song on the album and it's a decent song. out of 8 tracks 6 are fucking brilliant.
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 3:34pm Chris from DC:

I really like See The Sky myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 3:35pm coelacanth∅:

it's good but i sometimes wish it was shorter, i guess.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 3:38pm TDK60:

The Byrds did a great cover of See The Sky About To Rain -- Gene Clark on vocals.
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 3:39pm Chris from DC:

Have to look that up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 3:42pm dale:

now we need to hear 'love jones.' maybe that needs to wait for ken's show.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 3:44pm The Oscar:

So help me, I just got the joke of "Tyrone Shoelaces."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 3:44pm coelacanth∅:

i would think it's the best selling solo "beatle" album up until "imagine". wouldn't imagine have out-sold it?
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 3:46pm V Priceless:

can't go wrong w/Church of Anthrax, baby! Cale's doing a few gigs @ BAM later this year, I believe
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 3:49pm Cecile:

Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 4:09pm The Oscar:

I'm lucky enough to live near a theater with regular inspired double features (the Brattle in Cambridge, Mass). One of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 4:11pm TDK60:

The Graduate (1967), Midnight Cowboy (1969)
  Thu. 7/27/17 4:13pm thekenschlampen:

fabio, does the jones in basketball jones refer to jones alley in greenwich village?
  Thu. 7/27/17 4:15pm Jet Boy:

Fabio really enjoying the show!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 4:16pm The Oscar:

Funny enough, years ago I went to a double feature of Midnight Cowboy and Annie Hall. The Brattle often runs movies back-to-back-to-back, so you can decide which you want to see first. We wound up ending with Midnight Cowboy, which was great, but a downer as a follow-up to AH. Especially on the bus ride home.

maciste all'inferno tonite at prospect park bandshell, silent italian movie
  Thu. 7/27/17 4:19pm Dean:

Dang, just learned that Sly & Robbie are playing the venue behind my house on Saturday, when I have to head to airport.
  Thu. 7/27/17 4:19pm J:

I have permanent back problems from all my years of sitting in theaters. My Cinefamily membership (with those god awful seats) nearly put me in a wheelchair. Can't do it anymore! Besides, the film scene in LA is a little too hot rn for my tastes... prefer an empty theater like any decent misanthropic cinefile
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 4:20pm The Oscar:

@thekenschlampen THAT'S cool. I've only ever seen clips of that in Dwain Esper's MANIAC, which is a trip in itself. Wish I was in NYC tonight!
  Thu. 7/27/17 4:21pm thekenschlampen:

its free with a live score by sexmob
  Thu. 7/27/17 4:22pm J:

*years ago, sat through TWO epically long screenings of Lars Von Trier's The Kingdom at the Brattle. I believe it was an entire weekend; the entire show. Well worth it but painful. Miss that theater.
Avatar    Thu. 7/27/17 4:27pm Chris from DC:

Beersies shortly, seeing Alan Courtis tonight.
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 4:30pm Fabio:

@ thekenschlampen: No, "Jones" was a slang word in the sixties and seventies which referred to addiction -- meaning an addiction or habit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 4:30pm chris:

DC Chris, excellent evening!
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 4:31pm The Oscar:

@J That's so great-- I need to rewatch that. Many years ago they held an all-night marathon of the first season of Twin Peaks. As a surprise, they opened it with a a 35mm screening of Fire Walk With Me, which was awesome, but... disorienting for the TP newbies I brought along!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 4:34pm coelacanth∅:

i had to back up and listen to the mic break. i never knew that about Charlie Patton...it makes perfect sense. judging by what is said to be the only photograph of him, i never thought he looked african american.
  Thu. 7/27/17 4:36pm thekenschlampen:

@fabio but i thought jonesin' for drugs was from jones alley since it was a good hidden place to do drugs near washington square
Avatar Thu. 7/27/17 4:39pm Fabio:

@ thekenschlampen: oh, well I didn't know that! maybe you are right... will have to check with the auricle!

  Thu. 7/27/17 5:14pm Tony:

It seemed like for a long time in popular culture Yoko Ono was always synonymous with terrible music. I'm glad that seems to have faded. I bet most millennials don't even know who she is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 5:15pm Michael 98145:

Hello, I have nothing to offer today but failure.
  Thu. 7/27/17 5:18pm Tony:

@Fred: My computer's translate feature turns that into "the dribble of the clamping plate does not prevent the caravan from passing." Crapaud = toad, n'est-ce pas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 5:19pm Cecile:

who's that singing with Lady Gaga?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 5:20pm chris:

re: Yoko and being laughed at... i blame our lack of art education, really. too much focus on what's popular in the media. not enough attention to the ground breaking or at least the question of how to perceive and interpret art that's foreign to our sensibilities
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 5:23pm Carmichael:

Cecile made a funny ... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 5:23pm fred:

@Tony: it's not supposed to make sense, it's a mix of mistranslated proverbs. Level-up and try this iconic French movie scene: www.youtube.com...

Yes, ITA Fabio.
  Thu. 7/27/17 5:33pm Tony:

Thanks, but that is a little beyond my French comprehension ability, and the YouTube closed captioning seems to be way off! But looks like a great movie.
     Thu. 7/27/17 5:38pm Listener Robert:

Is this a medley/mashup, or is sporadic E skip giving me another station on 90.1 alternating with WMFU?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 5:42pm dale:

i'm not getting any skip at 90.1 robert. usually only when thunderstorms are west of us. and then i used to get it at 90.7 (which i don't listen to anymore)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 5:43pm fred:

@Tony: I guess you got the drift anyway. Les Tontons Flingueurs was an iconic movie for a long time over here. It's probably forgotten by now, so you didn't miss much
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 5:45pm Michael 98145:

  Thu. 7/27/17 5:47pm Steuben:

always love when you spin some Nick. thanks fab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 7/27/17 5:52pm Carmichael:

I read somewhere that the strings to Nick Drake's songs were added at a much later time, perhaps to fill out the music a bit more? His songs would seem even bleaker than they already are, it seems to me.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 5:56pm pinholga:

I remember hearing an interview with Joe Boyd where he was saying that the stuff was recorded live, and he would always be paying close attention to everyone else in the room, because Nick was always performing flawlessly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 7/27/17 5:58pm pinholga:

Here's that interview, or one where he says pretty much the same thing I remember hearing.
