Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Itzall Ablurr:

Good morning Joe, hope you are having a fine day.
Avatar 9:16am Jeff:

Funny thing. Listening to Sophie Tucker's voice, my first impression was that it really sounded like Nathan Lane.

was she a drag queen? sounds like it.
Avatar 9:44am Jeff:

Yes, we've definitely found the inspiration for one of Mr. Lane's theatrical declaiming styles.

All the rest of y'all probably realized this years ago.
  9:44am JakeGould:

Sophie Tucker is a theme.
Avatar 9:47am Cheri Pi:

Avatar 9:47am Jeff:

Nope, you're right maybe too close in the room here at home over the speakers.
  9:48am JakeGould:

You know how I have said your voice for the past few weeks sounded too dead center in the mix? Now this week. You now sound perfectly in line with your bed music today.

Whoa-- heard this song in an art supply store in western Mass on Saturday, and it's been stuck in my head ALL WEEKEND. Freaky!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am frozen_peas:

I get super nostalgic every time I hear this song.
  9:58am Kagi:

Me too, frozen_peas. Me, too.
Avatar 9:59am Joe McG:

This song sounds even better to me now than it did then.
  9:59am JakeGould:

Very 80s.
Avatar 10:00am Joe McG:

@TheOscar: That's crazy! I swear I wasn't in western Mass this weekend.
Avatar 10:01am βrian:

Oh Laetitia.
  10:02am howard in nyc:

I don't feel quite as sad when I hear that first New Order album. Still, a little sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Itzall Ablurr:

I may run out of stars if this continues... Latetia Sadier S.E. helps ease the pain of no more you-know-whoey-o-lab
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Uncle Michael:

"Committed" sure is lovely.
Avatar 10:07am Joe McG:

@itzall: I can't wait to see her here in August.
Avatar 10:07am Jeff:

Ooh - and Lætitia Sadier offers an opportunity to bust out the "æ" glyph!
  10:08am JakeGould:

I was listening to some Genesis this weekend. They are better than the crappy “Phil Collins is lame” detractors would make one think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am The Oscar:

(without checking player)
"Who is this?"
(drum fill)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear JakeGould, I couldn't agree more. It may be cool (?) to dislike him, but he has given the world a lot of great music, sue-sue-sudio notwithstanding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am maestroso:

Wow, haven't heard this in years. Reminds me of why I liked it back then.
Avatar 10:10am Joe McG:

@Jeff: I just have to observe that I'm stunned by your early rising today, Jeff! Hope everything is OK.
Avatar 10:12am Jeff:

It's a mystery to me as well. Popped awake early and decided to go with it instead of lying there angry that I wasn't sleeping.

Don't worry, I'll be miserable later in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Wendy del Formaggio:

Good morning, Joe! Ooh, I hear the opening strains of Yo La Tengo. Is "strain" the right word? That seems so...negative. As if it's an effort to listen. It's too bad I'm not a writer and could figure this out on my own.
Avatar 10:14am Jeff:

@Wendy: Too bad you're not, like, a journalist or anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Summer and Michael:

Ah, this Yo La Tengo record brings back some memories. So sweet. Great show, as ever, Joe.
Avatar 10:14am Joe McG:

@Wendy: Don't worry, Wendy, someday you'll be able to put a few words together. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Greg from ZONE 5:

I already have my YLT Marathon request in my pocket. Looking to go 3-for-3…
Avatar 10:16am Joe McG:

@S&M: Isn't that a pretty one? @Greg: I'm dying to know what it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Wendy del Formaggio:

@Jeff and Joe: Yeah, I keep hoping there's hope for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Wendy del Formaggio:

@Greg: Does this mean you won't do your laundry until late-Feb/early-March? I mean, what if the ink runs on the little piece of paper where you've written your request?
I suggest a tattoo.
Avatar 10:19am Joe McG:

@Itzall: This is a little hard to admit, but I kind of like "Sussudio."
  10:22am melinda:

Hi folks!
  10:23am Charley C:

What was that song about 1 hour and 40 minutes into Glen Jones' 6/25 show. And who did that song? The one about a guy complaining to his woman about her throwing tables in his face.
Avatar 10:25am Joe McG:

@Charley: Maybe some of the listeners might know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Itzall Ablurr:

Seriously, I'll take "Sussudio" over that super annoying, not even fun ironically Felder song in a heartbeat.
Avatar 10:28am βrian:

Gray skies over Otis' isthmus today.
  10:30am melinda:

Darn, missed the Collins.
  10:30am JakeGould:

Phil Collins is better than any Millennial Whoop song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am MD:

Swag For Life Member 10:32am tadpoles:

"Hold Me" is an old PJ Proby hit. Great stuff!

Oh Wow! General Public and New Order in one show. I'm transported to the Orange Julius.
Avatar 10:35am Joe McG:

Hey Will, if you're listening, there's some oboe on this record!
Avatar 10:37am herb.nyc:

hi all. i've mentioned this before, but, when first GENERAL PUBIC record came out they were giving it away at the ritz (now webster hall, later to be...). i went in the afternoon and it was kinda sparse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am steveo:

Hi! Sorry I'm late! Will check archives later for cubist masterpiece!

i'm a semi-collector of music poop, but why don't people bring vinyl to sell, outside this book store tonight, for collectors will be there:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am The Oscar:

This song is delightful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Wendy del Formaggio:

Oh my goodness. "Puppy Dog Song" is my new theme song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Mick:

That is a bassett hound of a bass line if I've ever heard one - in the best possible sense.
Avatar 10:42am Joe McG:

@Mick: Good ears! Chuck Rainey solo project!
  10:42am KH in Bloomington:

Avatar 10:43am Joe McG:

@KH: Amazing! That segueway was meant to be!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Wendy del Formaggio:

Are you going to play "Run Joey Run" by David Geddes next?
  10:47am JakeGould:

I don’t know about this “poor little white trash” ditty despite the fact it speaks a lot to me. A tad too literal.
  10:47am Listener Alexandra:

Good morning, Joe! And I thought maybe I was still half asleep, but you did really find a song called "Poor Little White Trash"....
Avatar 10:48am Whosondephone:

Transmitter work 91.1?
Avatar 10:48am Joe McG:

@Wendy: No, but I wish I had Dionne's "Windows of the World" on 45. That little riff at the end of "Poor Little White Trash" is a direct lift of that riff. @Alex: I did, I did!
  10:48am johnk77:

broadcast signal at 91.1 is faltering
show is great
listening in south bronx
only static at this moment
  10:48am melinda:

@Jake what is a millennial whoop song?
Avatar 10:48am Wild Neil:

People say "redneck" when they really mean "poor white trash"...and they don't know the difference anyfuxkingway. Ignorant pricks.
  10:49am Brendan:

Good morning . Love the duck on the 1 beat of this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Wendy del Formaggio:

@Joe: Ooh, I missed that. I'll go back later to the archives. I wish you had Dionne's "Windows" too. What a fabulous song.
  10:49am krissy b:

91.1 ain't workinnnnnn
  10:49am Listener Alexandra:

Well done as always, Joe!
Avatar 10:50am Joe McG:

@johnk77 & krissyb: Oops, bad news! I'm sure Ken and Jeff are on the case as I write this.
  10:52am JakeGould:

@melinda: There is no specific song called “Millennial Whoop” but it’s rather a vocal phrasing (?) in more tha a few modern pop songs. Google it. Wah oh wah oh!
Avatar 10:53am Stay Frosty:

I need my morning fix of Joe McG!!! Break the silence!!!

Avatar 10:57am herb.nyc:

wfmu fm not working? the stereo is on at home, for my cat. she's probably tearing up the place. tho she likes andy breckman, so maybe she's saying "oh good".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am -Ken:

No power at the transmitter site, so 91.1 fm could be down for anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours.
Avatar 10:58am Kurt Gottschalk:

you totally had time for another single, dammit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Ken From Hyde Park:

Hamsters, activate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am doctorjazz:

Avatar 11:02am Stay Frosty:

This is karmic payback for Joe only playing Yes once every ten years. I think that Comet Kahoutek will be swinging by around the same time.
Avatar 11:02am herb.nyc:

@Jeremy - if you can hear wfmu on fm, then play extra loud and open yr windows.
  11:04am Agent Peter:

Yeah, 91.9 fine in Manhattan..
  11:04am Caroline:

Phil Collins/ Yes= slippery slope my friend. Easy does it.
Avatar 11:06am βrian:

Uncle Michael has played Kansas, but maybe the stream is a bit more resilient.
  11:07am Jeremy:

@Herb: I would, but I boarded up all my windows after Drumpf got elected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am The Oscar:

I get unreasonably excited whenever lost silent movies are uncovered and shown. Still holding out hope for London After Midnight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Webhamster Henry:

You can read a little more about Marion Davies in the excellent if possibly fictitious in places memoir "BRING ON THE GIRLS!" by P.G. Wodehouse on his theatrical life with partner Guy Bolton.
Avatar 11:11am Wild Neil:

I LOVE me some STYX. They really rock. Un-ironically. Also the Knack. And The Cars Candy-O. Its like the stuff that Clay plays which is awesome power pop.
I also like 75 dollar bill, Horse Lords and Dirty Beaches. And Merl Haggard. Its the Redneck in me I'm sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Carmichael:

Heya Joe and Monday people. Lots of Ms. Sadier and Tremeloes this past weekend.
Avatar 11:11am herb.nyc:

@Jeremy - Drumpf entering thru our windows, like zombies impolitely do. and George Romero died, and Film Forum is showing his "night of the living dead" in oct (i think). it's all connected.
  11:11am knowitall@aol.com:

The Marion Davies reputation comes mainly from Citizen Kane. Welles himself says he went too far in his portrayal of her.
  11:14am Brendan:

Sweet jam
Avatar 11:21am Joe McG:

Some helpful notes for you about the songs: "Luces blancas" is about when cars pass each other and there are headlights and also traffic lights reflecting on each other; "El Mar" is about the sea; "Tricotosa" is a type of toy sewing machine popular with a generation of kids in Spain.
Avatar 11:22am Joe McG:

Here is a link to Isasa's bandcamp page: isasa.bandcamp.com... I'll announce some upcoming tour dates shortly.
  11:24am wendyfaye:

Saw him Saturday at a tiny show in Philly. Was feeling sad and it cheered me up immensely. Was suprised to hear it again this morning, a very pleasant suprise and nice reminder to stay in a good place. Thank-you!
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

@wendyfaye: So glad you caught him! For local folks, he'll be back in the area this coming Saturday playing Troost in Brooklyn.
Avatar 11:27am Own CrabappleSatellite Johnzon:

I have a request... play some Univore! Or just... check out Univore at your leisure! Really just trying to spread awareness of my pals Univore!.... ... .... Univore! www.youtube.com... if you're not familiar, their most popular video is "champagne taste" but there are a bunch of other good ones... basically everything they do is good but I particularly like Angela, Scorpions & Brazil, Ghost of Me, Vendetta, I've been trying to run into you, and Indulgences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am doctorjazz:

Avatar 11:29am Joe McG:

More notes: "Aina" is apparently referencing a Spanish hardcore band of the '90s! Apparently Isasa used to be in the hardcore scene back then. @OwnCrab: Will check them out, thanks! @drjazz: Yes, a very nice intimate spot in Brooklyn next Saturday. I'll announce the other dates, too, in case some of you are listening in North Carolina or Maryland. He's in Durham tonight, Asheville on Tuesday, Chapel Hill on Thursday, Baltimore on Friday, and Brooklyn is the tour end on Saturday.
