Hi Bill. Found your email just as the show was starting, so, serendipity!
Avatar 4:18pm Brian in UK:

Mais oui. A tough job but I need something to take my mind off not working!!
Avatar 4:18pm Bill Mac:

Hey all, haven't missed anything but a plethora of technical difficulties. I think I got it now. How long I been working here?
  4:22pm pacific standard simon:

It's my day off, so I'm still in bed (west coast time), grazing a whisky and soda and reading Ian Fleming. Nice soundtrack, even w/technical difficulties.
Avatar 4:25pm Sem Chumbo:

@pasificstandardsimon: a long time fan of Fleming writes: which one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Parq:

Here. Busy.
  4:28pm pacific standard simon:

@Sem Chumbo Thrilling Cities, his travel essays.

The Nelson Riddle track reminded me of a desire to hear some Gordon Jenkins. All I have is on vinyl, and no record player.

The Damned. I remember some kid po-goed through the ceiling when I put them on at the Students Union bar. We got stung with the bill for the damage but it was worth it.

Avatar 5:07pm Bill Mac:

@Stanley It's a bit messier than the usual pick
Avatar 5:08pm Sem Chumbo:

Bonne nuit, BiUK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Stanley:

Yeah but it's always good to go back to Trout Mask Replica to remind us what a genius Don was.
Avatar 5:19pm Sem Chumbo:

Good to hear Rockette again.
Avatar 5:19pm Sem Chumbo:

Still touring w/ the Magic Band, I guess.
  5:19pm pacific standard simon:

My appreciation of Beefheart's genius has been tempered by the lack of credit he offered his mudicians, and the fact that Cotton left the band after being beaten up by Beefheart.
Avatar 5:22pm geezerette:

Black Hole Beefheart ! Nice!
Yay Bill, looking forward to what I've missed, thanks to archive.
Avatar 5:23pm geezerette:

Hi! :D
  5:29pm pacific standard simon:

I read the French book, and Harkelroad's book, and the Beefheart biography. A little obsessed, I guess. They made me happy that the "good" Captain never hooked up with Charlie Manson.
Avatar 5:30pm Bill Mac:

@Sem Chumbo: Rockette had some sort of heart issue last year which put an end to touring with the Magics, probably another reason French decided to hang it up.
Avatar 5:30pm Bill Mac:

@PSS I have both books too
Avatar 5:33pm Sem Chumbo:

Thanks, Bill. Looks like Wiki-thingy has not been updated lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm doctorjazz:

Magic Band to do a final farewell tour

Avatar 5:35pm Bill Mac:

Avatar 5:36pm Bill Mac:

@DJ I never heard that track until today
  5:38pm Mark R:

Bill, I love your show, are you filling in today or is this your regular slot now?
Avatar 5:40pm Sem Chumbo:

Lovely. Thanks, Stanley. Playing up your way, I see.
Avatar 5:40pm Bill Mac:

Hey Mark thanks! Nope, this would actually conflict with work if I did it every week. Doing this today and next Tuesday though.
Avatar 5:40pm Bill Mac:

@Stanley, you gotta go..
Avatar 5:41pm geezerette:

I'm a Can Fan.
  5:42pm pacific standard simon:

I've heard some Magic Band boots, and, frankly, I'd rather listen to the two Mallard records. Not enough respect for those. But I'm happy with the original musicians making a living any way they can.
  5:42pm Mark R:

Aw too bad--this set is superb.
Avatar 5:43pm Bill Mac:

@Geezerette - The singles set annoys me a bit. They just seem to chop the tunes off after three minutes or so - but yeah i love em.
  5:45pm pacific standard simon:

When you do stuff like this, Bill, it reminds me of Monica.
Avatar 5:46pm Bill Mac:

Monica is a highly regarded in my house, so thanks. It took me a while to get here.
Avatar 5:47pm geezerette:

@Bill, yes, there's just no substitute for live if possible.
This is a spectacular show you're doing.
Avatar 5:48pm Sem Chumbo:

Been big fun, as usual, Bill. See you again next time. And ^^^, I gotta agree.
Avatar 5:50pm Bill Mac:

Thanks Sem, allllwaaaayyysss a pleasure!
  5:50pm David D:

Hey Bill, it took me over an hour and a half to realize it's Tuesday at a certain time, I must really be on vacation. Thanks for filling in - sounding great!
Avatar 5:52pm Bill Mac:

Thanks Dave! A little problem with the stream software in the beginning but smooth sailing so far!
Enjoy your vacation!
  5:55pm pacific standard simon:

Obscure Beau Brummels would be one of the reasons to listen to WFMU.
  5:57pm Mark R:

Anyone who doesn't love Emmylou Harris is crazy. I have trouble picturing her with a bottle, though.
  6:01pm pacific standard simon:

Hey, she hung out with Gram. Imagine THAT.

They stole the body to set it on fire, per his wishes, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Stanley:

Well, this has been a pleasure but sadly it's time for me to crawl into my pit.
Till next week. Bye Bill and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Fran:

Bye Stanley.......next time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Parq:

Rough work day. Thanks for the company, Bill. This mash-up is brilliant.
Avatar 6:10pm Bill Mac:

Stanley thanks for hanging, it's night time there get some sleep for crying out loud. See you next week!
Avatar 6:10pm Bill Mac:

@Parq I thought so too!
  6:11pm pacific standard simon:

Oh, this is hilarious! I want a copy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Fran:

Great stuff from earlier Bill - glad to see the increasingly majestic Richard Dawson in there too!
Avatar 6:17pm Bill Mac:

That was an awesome track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Fran:

I've seen Richard singing unaccompanied to 10 people in a small back room of a bar, a big old church and a few weeks ago with a full band playing the Peasant record - he holds a room like no one else!
  6:21pm pacific standard simon:

That was Fred Neil? Seriously? Sounded like he was listening to a lot of Marty Robbins or something.

The best of Kenny Rogers. Wannabe Neil Diamond.
  6:31pm pacific standard simon:

Just to be clear, if it sounds like I'm heckling, NO. I love this stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

From what I read - Fred Neil was considered the legendary Potentate of NYC Folk Singers - a revered Voice. You can hear where Tim Buckley got a lot listening to him...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...'Other Side of This Life', 'Dolphins'...He Dropped Out - & Zappa financed his retirement in Florida is the tale...
Avatar 6:34pm Bill Mac:

Good to know - I always knind of wondered what puddle of ooze he originated from
Avatar 6:35pm geezerette:

Nina takes everything deeper, makes it her own.
Avatar 6:35pm Bill Mac:

I'd be interested in hearing what his connection to Zappa was
Avatar 6:37pm Bill Mac:

@Geezerette Saw a documentary on her this year. She's a special performer for sure.
  6:37pm pacific standard simon:

Fred Neil: "That's The Other Side Of This Life", "Everybody's Been Talking At Me", "Looking For The Dolphins". Folky hippy.
  6:41pm pacific standard simon:

OK, you guys beat me to it. He was also a major junkie, which probably had a lot to d o with his spotty genius.
Avatar 6:42pm geezerette:

That documentary was harrowing. Sad when people give so much and feel they've given nothing.
Her voice is galvanizing.
Avatar 6:44pm geezerette:

Speaking of which, young Betty Lavett. Even better older.
Avatar 6:46pm geezerette:

Bill, wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Fran:

Magic Band - not sure if it was picked up in earlier conversation Bill - their forthcoming UK dates are being billed as a farewell tour. I know Status Quo made a latter day career out of farewell tours each year but catch them while you can is my advice!
Avatar 6:47pm Bill Mac:

I always forget about Odetta
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Fran:

Odetta is just amazing!
Avatar 6:47pm geezerette:

Magnificent set.
Avatar 6:48pm Bill Mac:

I think John is tired of trying to get new players in the band and then have to teach them the music. He mentioned that the Beefheart Magic Band relationship was 14 years long, as is this Magic Band reincarnation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Fran:

I get where John is coming from Bill but its a shame - the current band with Eric Klerks, Max Kutner and Andy Niven is very good with its own personality now established.
Avatar 6:53pm V Priceless:

thanx Bill! Fun show!
Avatar 6:53pm Bill Mac:

Up Next:
Neighbors Noise with Jesse Kaminsky 7 - 10pm
The Long Way Home with Kris Holmes 10 - midnight
Avatar 6:53pm Bill Mac:

I agree, but I wonder whether the air went out of him once Danny Wally and Rockette left.
  6:53pm David D:

Thanks again, Bill - excellent show!
Avatar 6:54pm geezerette:

Thanks Bill!
Avatar 6:55pm Bill Mac:

Thanks folks getting ready to make a hasty exit. Thanks for all you discussion, heckling and comments - all done with love!. See yuz next week!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Fran:

You may have it there Bill I think. Great show tonight and catch you and all next time!
  6:57pm pacific standard simon:

It was pretty clear that the "success" of the early '80s Magic Band was based on all the new musicians being dedicated to learning the style of the classic band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Bryce:

my underemployed afternoon was so jauntified on your watch. thank you, friend!
