Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In an infinite universe - somewhere I made this album...
Avatar 10:12pm Dave Mandl:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm redkayak:

Methinks there's too much light pollution in these parts anyway....
  10:15pm cheri:

dave, I hate to be a burden but did you bring some bowie tunes tonight?
Avatar 10:17pm Dave Mandl:

Avatar 10:30pm Dave Mandl:

@Carmichael: Middle period!
Avatar 10:31pm Dave Mandl:

@RRN63: The singing was much too low to be Jon Anderson, no?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Webhamster Henry:

Tipton was often Nilsson's arranger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm joeray:

Evening, Dave and all FMUers.
@cheri:Clay Pigeon seems to slip in a Bowie track on every Wake and Bake morning show!

Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him?) from 2010
  10:44pm cheri:

joeray, thanks for the tip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Webhamster Henry:

Its one of my faves, really rich and lots of extra material on the DVD. (Disclaimer: I sang in the Loser's Lounge tribute to Harry Nilsson back in the 90s)
Avatar 10:46pm Dave Mandl:

Hey there joeray, Henry, Marc15, tlw.
Avatar 10:46pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, Henry. And thanks for the info about Tipton. I guess I forgot about him.
  10:47pm cheri:

dave, wonderful show by any standard, and really don't worry about "the cake" it's no problem
Avatar 10:48pm Dave Mandl:

Merci, cheri.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm joeray:

"Everything You Always Wanted to Know..." was my introduction to R Stevie Moore, then after purchasing many cassettes, LP's and CD's of R Stevie this one is still my favorite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Webhamster Henry:

Now for an R. Stevie Moore biopic! ("Cool Daddio", in production). cooldaddiofilm.com
Avatar 10:50pm HollyT:

Yes. Love me some Van Dyke Parks. Dave, do you follow him on Twitter? He's entertaining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Irwin:

Tom Wilson co-produced this VDP single.
Avatar 10:52pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: No, but I see his stuff now and then when people RT it. Maybe I should.
Avatar 10:52pm HollyT:

However, I'm sure you know that Andrew Sandoval has a radio show named after this song and uses it as his theme song? I guess it just moved over here from Luxuria Music. So hearing this always makes me think his show is starting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Uncle Michael:

Good evening.
Avatar 10:53pm Dave Mandl:

@Irwin: I didn't know that. Thanks.
  10:53pm Carmichael:

You know, I said to myself it's ok to make a quick run to the liquor store, I won't miss too much. I see Fairport was on ... I blame myself.
Avatar 10:53pm Dave Mandl:

Hey there, UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Uncle Michael:

Sounds like I missed the 2% mark LONG ago.
Avatar 10:54pm HollyT:

Speaking of which, I've been listening to Luxuria Music for over ten years now. Crazy. And I've been listening to THIS show since I met you in...2003?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

BonusTrack - Kinks totally new to me. Smiling.
  10:55pm el Garree~:

Van Dyke is awesome. BTW, Nilsson didn't write "... Talking" It was Fred Neil from St. Pete Fla... (I'm here now). He did the showbiz thing for a few and then went to work with dolphins. Great show.
Avatar 10:56pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: 2003, correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

People speak of Fred's voice like it was the some godly Source. TimBuckley sure was into him.
Avatar 11:03pm HollyT:

@el Garree, I am in Florida also. :)
  11:05pm cheri:

dave, I got to go, but I hope everything's cool see you all next week, goodnight all!
Avatar 11:08pm Dave Mandl:

@elG: Thanks.
Avatar 11:09pm Dave Mandl:

@cheri: Night!
Avatar 11:13pm HollyT:

Ah yes, Blue Rondo a la Turk. Top ten jazz faves of all time
Avatar 11:17pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: I somehow knew you'd say that.
Avatar 11:17pm geezerette:

Love Brubeck!!! Bill Evans!!! Baker!!! Mulligan!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm joeray:

Just recently, an online piano dealer from CA was selling a Baldwin grand previously owned by Dave Brubeck.
Avatar 11:19pm geezerette:

Just some of the many who always sound fresh and timeless. Paul Desmond. :)
Avatar 11:19pm geezerette:

That was a treat.
Avatar 11:20pm Dave Mandl:

@geezerette: Very true.
Avatar 11:20pm Dave Mandl:

I mean true about it being timeless.
  11:20pm barba yiorgi:

Brubeck was cute, but really that was always a clunky unfunky 9/8 compared to the real Turkish 9/8 it's based on
Avatar 11:20pm Dave Mandl:

@joeray: Get out of here!
Avatar 11:21pm Dave Mandl:

@barbayorgi: You would know (the master of 9/8).
Avatar 11:21pm geezerette:

Beautiful play list Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm fleep:

how do you test the provenance of a piano? bill of sale? picture of him playing it? residual DNA on the keys?
Avatar 11:22pm Dave Mandl:

I saw Brubeck with a small quartet at Carnegie Hall many years ago and the sound was so beautiful.
Avatar 11:22pm Dave Mandl:

@geezerette: Thank you kindly. Making it up as I go along.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm joeray:

@Dave Mandl: Yup, and it wasn't even selling for a premium price (because it was Brubeck's piano), that really surprised me.
Avatar 11:23pm geezerette:

A pleasure to listen.
  11:23pm el Garree~:

The Lacy thing got me to thinking... Evan Parker played a while ago in Fla. Sam Rivers came over from Orlando and they traded off. Interesting nite. Just good folks to hang with. Sorry but everyone's an expert on this stuff except me. I only connected with Van Dyke Parks a few years ago. I had another life going on and didn't read all that stuff. I only heard from a friend who I guess knew Fred Neill so I didn't know that either, or just forgot it. The music is beginning to scream now! Mr. Dave, is that you on reverb or my rig? Anyway great set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm fleep:

and clunky unfunky greetings
  11:28pm barba yiorgi:

Amazing show BTW, checking the playlist, will have to listen to the archive. fabu-lush
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm ! I X Key !:

Avatar 11:28pm Dave Mandl:

@barbayiorgi: Thanks, amigo.
Avatar 11:29pm Dave Mandl:

@elG: Not sure about the reverb. I'm not adding any here on my end.
Avatar 11:33pm HollyT:

@el Garree I knew Sam and his wife Bea. Having them here in Orlando for so many years was incredible. Know many people who played with his big band. When I lived in NYC people were always surprised to find out Orlando had an actual jazz scene. Next time you're over this way, check out Timucua White House and Blue Bamboo.
  11:37pm el Garree~:

Ok, got it. Reverb must be on my side. Barbayiorgi has got that time sig observation correct. But you have to factor in when that song came out ('59). But most african american players had already been doing exotic sigs and then ramped it up in the '60's.
Avatar 11:42pm Dave Mandl:

@elG: The funny thing is, as complex as a lot of jazz was, the vast majority was in 4/4, or 3/4. The crazy time signatures didn't really get going till fusion, Mahavishnu Orch etc.
  11:42pm el Garree~:

Holly! This is great. I just loved Bea and Sam. I told music people here to latch on and promote Sam and don't let go. He's just the real deal and would walk away from some crap he didn't like. I'm in the land ' the burbs in T'Bay. Clay Pidg is from St. Pete. Don't tell anyone.
Avatar 11:44pm tuner fish:

Wow, amazing show tonight, Dave!
  11:45pm rw:

Checking in to say hello and nice show! Goes by FAST!
Avatar 11:45pm Dave Mandl:

@tuner: TVM.
Avatar 11:45pm Dave Mandl:

Hi, rw. And thanks.
Avatar 11:47pm HollyT:

@el Garree: Cool. Yes, Sam was the real deal and then some.
  11:48pm Carmichael:

Dave, thanks for the tuneage. This sounds a lot like Nick Drake. Have a good week.
Avatar 11:49pm Dave Mandl:

@Carmichael: My thoughts exactly, even the title ("hazy"). Take care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm Ike:

Sounds good!
Avatar 11:59pm HollyT:

Gnite Dave. Great show!! Nite folks
Avatar 11:59pm Dave Mandl:
