A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Yé-yé (French pronunciation: [jeje]) was a style of pop music that emerged from France, Italy, Spain and Portugal in the early 1960s. The term "yé-yé" was derived from the English term "yeah! yeah!", popularized by British beat music bands such as the Beatles. The style expanded worldwide, due to the success of figures such as the French singer-songwriters Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy. [Wikipedia]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Ken From Hyde Park:

Oh, nice! That sounds like a good way to celebrate a birthday.

Speaking of French, just rewatched the original Twin Peaks for the first time since it first aired. When Jerry Horne comes back from France raving about baguettes with butter and Brie? Those rolls are just crappy hero rolls.

Morning, gang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Ken From Hyde Park:

I was IMing with a French chap this morning and wished him Happy Bastille Day and that I was sorry we couldn't send a more competent leader. His response: "I know."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am MD:

They almost ended up with The Pen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Passaic River Blues:

@Ken: Can you imagine Trump attending a bal de pompiers in Paris tonight? "I thought this was going to be a classy ball! What's with all these firemen? Sad!"
  10:26am Sam:

The French totally copied us. Democracy was our idea. Then 13 years after our revolution, they plagiarize our idea. Sad!

Las Grecas!!!

@sam: macron won 2/3 of the vote. they had a 74% voter turnout: lowest turnout since 1969. when was the last time we even had that turnout? our turnout is usually sooooo low
  10:30am sugarwolf:

I hope Macron continues to troll Trump.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Webhamster Henry:

Plus de "non plus"
  10:31am Sam:

Yes, everybody loves to complain and talk about politics ad inifinitum but they often forget that part about showing up to the voting booth.
  10:33am Sam:

Is Macron going to keep his promise to give everyone free macarons?
  10:36am Linda:

Hello! The Pierre Henry, the "Grandfather of Techno," died recently..I know it is unusual to make requests, but do you have any in your awesome collection of French music that you could play???
  10:41am Andal:

That song about dreaming of Paris hurt my heart. lived there 3 years ago and miss my friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am frozen_peas:

I still have the biggest crush on a young Daniel Darc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Lewis:

@Linda - My guess is that Fabio will do at least one set this afternoon with a focus on Pierre Henry. He did one set last week toward the end of the show if you want a fix right away from the archives... (not that you should forego Trouble of course!)

Swag For Life Member 10:52am tadpoles:

Always great to hear the TVPs on FMU. Thanks for a great show Trouble.
Avatar 10:54am Trouble:

that organ was pierre henry remixed by st germain. cd is trashed, so i took it out and wiped it and will begin again
Avatar 10:55am Trouble:

@linda: i plyed some pierre henry last week before i knew he had died! weird...
  10:56am Listener Gregory:

This (Jericho Jerk) is a very nice track, but I had to turn off the radio for a second to make sure the gong was coming from the music and not my building's fire alarm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am thriftstoreleather:

What TVP song was that???
  10:58am Will:

That collaboration between Spooky Tooth and Pierre Henry in 1969 will forever lives as one of weirdest experiments ever. Right down to the difficult cover art.
  11:00am Linda:

Tous à la Bastille! And RIP Pierre Henry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am steveo:

syd barrett lived in cherry hinton, cambridge - just down the road from me. naturally everyone in cambridge had a story about having seen him...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am The Oscar:

A+ segue!
Avatar 11:04am Stay Frosty:

Syd...what a troubled genius. Pun intended.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am The Oscar:

Also @josh I used to work in a used record shop (in the other Cambridge, funny enough) down the road from Tom Lehrer's house. It was always funny reading about what a recluse he is, when I would see him walking down the street every day.
  11:05am jt:

This is a very different TVP version than i have heard, I know where "Syd Barret Lives" The album version gives an address at the end of the song.. which turns out to be in Munich, but that was not Syd's real address..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am The Oscar:

No prob :)
  11:08am Listener142985:

I lived in an apartment building on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston where Aerosmith had lived years before when they had no money. Anybody else?
Swag For Life Member 11:08am tadpoles:

@jt.. You're probably thinking of a live version and if it was Munich it was probably a German tour.

TVPs once opened for Pink Floyd and gave out Syd's real address at the end of the song which enraged David Gilmour and he kicked them off the tour.
  11:08am Sam:

I saw Michel LeGrand in a tiny little club in Paris. His son was there too, who's also an amazing musician. What a great night. I drank a whiskey that was older than I was. Later I and ended up at the urinal right next to Michel LeGrand's son and said made a little small talk.
Avatar 11:08am Stay Frosty:

Nothing worse than ornery CDs.
  11:08am Emily:

Dear Trouble, oh, I have missed you and the birds. Hope they don't mind the jostling, but it's really nice to hear their twittering! XO

  11:21am Ghetto Pastrami:

loving all of the French language tunes today. I don't speak French but it still makes for great listening.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am The Oscar:

@Kev I had a bunch through the record store-- Peter Wolf, Andy Pratt, and Damon Krukowski were all regulars, plus memorable appearances by Courtney Love and DJ Kool Herc. Then there was the time Ron Jeremy scorned me in front of an auditorium full of people, and the time I was in St. Vincent's apartment (though I can't remember if I met her, and it kills me).
  11:29am jt:

Brushes w/ Fame dept. : I knew a guy who, over the years, happened to live on three different streets in three different cities where Leonard Cohen had also lived. Parquet Courts had a 'band' photo done in my stairwell, but I had only realized that by looking for their tour dates. I once owned a short that Arlo Guthrie had owned. I eventually gave it away. Heavy aura. Wish I still had that shirt.

@tadpoles: I also caught the Mark Mothersbaugh show yesterday, many thanks to you for the tip! Agree with steveo that it was astonishing. Sort of ashamed to admit that I had no idea of the breadth of his work - must have been snoozing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Greg from ZONE 5:

Feeling it
  11:43am Laura L:

@ Mick and tp--glad you saw it! I designed the announcement for it, which was great fun, and MM loved it. He's a terrific artist and a gent.
Swag For Life Member 11:44am tadpoles:

@Mick...@Steveo..@Laura L....I still can't get over the 30,000 postcards and yes his instruments are brilliant!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am steveo:

yes & I also enjoyed the weird miniatures in the basement
  11:47am Laura L:

I know--the postcards alone! Whoa! And mixed into those were some Devo dollars--which we used to make long ago in their honor--take a Sharpie and black out letters other than D E V O in "Federal Reserve Note" at top of a dollar bill and you've got yourself a DEVO dollar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Mick:

The instruments were over the top amazing - pulled you into the room no matter what you were looking at. Laura, do you know how many different compositions are programmed into that? The postcards boggled the mind...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Greg from ZONE 5:

Holy smokes! I just put that show on my calendar so I don't miss it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Michael 98145:

@LL, heh. i remember doing that ...
Avatar 11:52am Jeff:

So was that "wooden ships" a different band from the one with the silent "j"?

Music is so confusing.
  11:54am Laura L:

The instruments were fantastic! Pure happiness! Dunno how many compositions tho. There is a book that goes w/ the exhibition--it was organized by the Denver Museum of Art first, and it's well done. By the way, MM told me Eno showed them the Sharpie-dollar thing first--he was making ENO dollars, so they stared making DEVO dollars. Ha!
Avatar 11:55am Trouble:

no jeff, that's my mistypiiiiinggggness
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am steveo:

@mick @laura the person at the desk said there were about 11 different pieces -- I wish I'd had time to stay longer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am tomasz.:

that J was silent? i always called them Wooden Shuh-jips
Swag For Life Member 11:57am tadpoles:

Excellent Laura. Just had to do one in his honour and love the Eno bit although DEVO works better...you can spread it out. Thanks for your nice work. I had to buy the book.

Thanks for your nice mix today Trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am The Oscar:

In my mind I've always called them "Wooden Shyips" (the Danish blood in me, I suppose), but I don't know if I've ever had the opportunity to say it out loud.
