His coat needs ironing.

Dick McK looks quite self-confidant
Avatar 3:05pm Sem Chumbo:

Nice quilted suit on Mr. McKenna.
Good afternoon, Irwin, and Chusidians by birth AND choice.

His face is also slightly quilted.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Irwin:

Greetings all. Mr. McKenna was a special guest on the Old Codger's radio show in 1931. They were both extremely grumpy individuals. Codger still is, actually.
Avatar 3:15pm Sem Chumbo:

McKenna is Jim Thorpe. Swear to god: www.thinglink.com...
Avatar 3:17pm βrian:

@Sem: Yes, that was my immediate reaction.
Avatar 3:18pm βrian:

Laetitia Casta? Wha?
Avatar 3:18pm geezerette:

Sem, I thought Ira Hayes but don't remember what either of them looked like.

  4:38pm Dean:

OMG. Jeff Golick played Geri Allen on Sunday a.m. For a moment I thought it was a post-mortem tribute, but no. And yet...sad news. RIP, indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Irwin:

Finally, a musician's death which cannot be attributed to this show. Perhaps the curse has migrated to Jeff's program. Check his recent playlists.
  4:42pm berbo:

This discussion is boring. I'm glad Joe isn't going to use it on his radio show.
  5:04pm Lyle:

The Buzzcocks. I remember those boys. If you stay in this business long enough like I have, you cross paths with everyone eventually. I first encountered the Buzzcocks in, what was it, '81? I was working with the John Davidson show, playing a flurry of one-nighters across the upper midwest. We were playing some type of county fair, I've played a million of 'em. Mr. Davidson was cranky that day as I recall. It was hot. The gig was outdoors in the afternoon. Direct sunlight. Mr. Davidson's makeup was running and his hairspray was stinging his eyes. Several times he turned to the band to tell us to quiet down, the volume of the band evidentally irritating him. By the time we got to "Windmills of Your Mind," he melted down altogether. The Buzzcocks were on the side of the stage, checking us out. They were having a "right good laugh," as they would have put it, at Mr. Davidson's expense. The show wound down and we finished to a polite smattering of applause. The Buzzcocks went on and literally tore the place apart. On the bus, Mr. Davidson apoligized to us for having lost his cool. He was a good man. Later that night at Denny's, someone sent Mr Davidson a complimentary Moons Over My Hammy. We all turned to look, to see who had been so generous. It was the Buzzcocks, who uniformy tipped their matching bowler hats to us. Finally, Mr. Davidson smiled.
  5:06pm Lyle:

*uniformly. My hands are a little stiff these days. Trombone oil leaks into the dermis. Hardens the tissues.
Avatar 5:07pm MenfussMike:

@Lyle....John Davidson of That's Incredible fame?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Irwin:

Lyle, are you saving these playlist tidbits for a full-length memoir?
  5:08pm Lyle:

Oh, there just an old trombone player's stories. Glad you enjoy them. MenfussMike I lost track of him after that. Not sure what he did. May or may not be the same fella. Enjoying the music!
  5:09pm jan:

Kait Dunton- Real & Imagined - Lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Lyle - If you have any recordings of your band, you should send a copy to WFMU and get some airtime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm common:

Irwin. All. Hi
Avatar 5:10pm Undead83:

Awesome recollection
Avatar 5:10pm MenfussMike:

well he would have been hosting That's Incredible in the early 80's so maybe not the same guy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Irwin:

Lyle, are your storytelling skills verbal? The new Woofmoo morning show could use your contributions. Perhaps you can be an occasional "stringer."
  5:17pm Old Dave:

Trombone stories would be great! I played in 6th grade. If only a Ska band had shown up to demonstrate how cool that instrument can be... might have been a lifelong thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Itzall Ablurr:

Ain't it a shame when you get so consumed with work that you realize you have missed almost an entire Irwin show?!? Yes, of course it is.
Avatar 5:21pm TehBadDr:

That Mummy Dust sure does pack a punch, be careful kids!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 5:24pm KP:

Is this from some expanded version of Inside Looking Out or have i not heard in a very long time?
Avatar 5:25pm KP:

Oh, OutsideInside is not "Inside looking Out." Sorry. Sounds great though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

You can be sure every Grungester in Seattle knew that...Outside & Inside...
  5:26pm jan:

Ah Commander Cody! fun to drive down that lonsesome memory highway. Another
LP left behind at the parents' tag sale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Stanley:

@Itzall - I could say the same about my life!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Itzall Ablurr:

Dear Stanley, Ow! But I get it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Irwin:

Blackbird consists of the Kinman brothers (Dils, Rank & File).
Avatar 5:42pm TehBadDr:

Strains of Love and Rockets crossed w/ The Archies?
  5:42pm Old Dave:

Stanley and Itzall-
The few who can plan a working life around this station are to be envied.
Thank God for archives, I say. Some shows (like this one!) deserve hearing a
few times. The stuff I've learned from FMU is amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Michael 98145:

enjoyed the Dils back in the day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Itzall Ablurr:

I heard that, O.D. Something about the "shared experience" is great when you can be there for the live broadcast, but archiving is why God invented the internet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Michael 98145:

another great show; thank you, Irwin. today's homework: Terri Lyne Carrington ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Stanley:

Old Dave - I wistfully admire those cats who are at work AND tuned in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm spodiodi:

I love learning :)
  5:54pm Old Dave:

Live is always my goal, Stanley! Some days it actually happens.
Like today!
  5:55pm zopa:

brilliant Irwin, just brilliant!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

efd quoted as saying, 'Archives are like compilations w/ talking.' Never used archives - cause there's *always* great new FMU being broadcast! However - when not home I listen to podcasts. Long ago past the point I feel time away from FMU is actually good for both of us...it's a five year mission to go where no FMUvian has gone before...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yerknow - if I got contempo enuff to stream on the run...just stick the wireless interwebizer in our frontal lobes & let's get on w/ this Age of ♒Aquarius they're all so enthused about...my identity wasn't worth much anyhow...
  5:58pm Old Dave:

Great show Irwin, thanks so much
