I'm always thinking about the myth of there being nothing twixt Elvis in the Army & TheBeatles in the U.S. For gittar-diddlers - we know that Surf was thoroughly essential. Fender was a WestCoast company - & DickDale pushed amplifier tech like Townshend woudl take it the next step in London...
Surf & Drag were also early DropOut DIY Cultures - very Punk...

Good point about diy punk attitude. Despite recent revisionism, beats, surf and cars were a huge part of west coast culture.
All that stuff was kind of a contemporary take on the cowboy myth.

The crazy thing about surf is that, while all these counterculture connections are there, there's an aspect of it that's basically a continuation of mood/easy-listening music as well (both it's normative and adventurous impulses, of course). Surf is pure music, pure culture

The whole PreBeatles New Frontier thing - I often think the trajectory towards Psychedelia was inevitable. JoeMeek was tripping hard... The Lounge / Exotica / Tiki thing too... Being born in Nov63 w/ older siblings - it's the period I emerged into, &/or just before it. That gives it a real numinous aura full of strange longing for me - which you may or may not grok whatsoever...
