Hello Boss, waiting for a new refrigerator to be delivered. Man, life in the fast lane.

I see Marty McSorley has a fill-in next week. Hmmm.
Avatar 8:43am glenn:

a beer fridge for the shed? how canadian of you, brian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am Doug Schulkind:

My new fridge comes next week! It must be contagious. Hello, BinUK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am Doug Schulkind:

The thermostat in my current fridge is broken, so it never stops blowing the freezing air into the main compartment. Consequently everything on the lower shelf is freezing. The upside, my seltzer is coming out with ice chips in it. #refreshing

But it's not so good for the fruit and veggies.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56am Doug Schulkind:

I like the way you operate, doc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Doug Schulkind:

This is like Nyabinghi meets Sun Ra. All hail Count Ossie!
  9:09am Mark Williams:

amazing recording, this. Thanks Doug. I think Cedric Brooks is one of the tenor saxophonists here, who spent a little bit of time around Sun Ra.
  9:10am Mr C:

The eagle flies on Friday and Saturday I go out to's Drummer Time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Im Brooks lived with Sun Ra in his Philly enclave, in fact, Mark!

Come fly with me, Mr C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am doctorjazz:

This Count Ossie track is great!

glenn Cellar is for the 'warm' English beer & 'fridge for that foreign cold stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

Get ready for Bang Bang Lulu.
  9:15am Mark Williams:

Coolie Boy's just been compiled onto a Soul Jazz release. It was one of the harder-to-track down Drummond cuts. It always gets me that one sax guy was just willing to sit there and do that single note "honk" the whole way through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

I have it on a comp called Solid Gold From the Vaults (Vol. 2)
  9:19am Mark Williams:

i'm old enough now to have seen tracks be reissued half a dozen times and we're not done by a long shot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

Twisted children are killin' frogs.
  9:22am Mark Williams:

Doug, have you heard that Frightners record? Trouble played it yesterday and my first reaction was 'wait, I've not heard this Studio One track before." Recorded a few years ago, it was...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Doug Schulkind:

Nope. Not yet, Mark. But I shall and must.
  9:26am Mark Williams:

aaahhh well, Far I. He was my gateway drug into this music. Still get a high out of him too.

Carol Kaye is on bass on this (and every other track under the sun).

Avatar 10:01am Brian in UK:

S'funny, I was playing Coltrane's My Favourite Things in the car this AM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Webhamster Henry:

Nice set! @Ike we are hipsters, flipsters, and finger-poppin' daddies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am ɨkɛ:

Great set! Old?!? I'm only as old as you feel! (Remember, if you ever need to defeat a psychic succubus, just feel extra old. Focus on all your aches and pains. The succubus will either get annoyed and break the connection willingly, or will duck into a CVS to get some aspirin and then you can give it the slip.)
  10:08am Alex in Illinois:

Any relation to Fate Marable, the famous river boat band leader musician?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

I just meant not a "new" listener, ɨkɛ! You're a young chap like me!
Avatar 10:08am coelacanth∅:

Doug, i scrolled up to see about something else and saw you @9.21... i've been really loving very frequent revisits to Roberta Flack's version. - and trying to school the chilluns at the pub, when the moments are right. (some appreciate it) i forget which version is in the jukebox there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

From Wikipedia:

"Larance was a relative of Mississippi riverboat bandleader Fate Marable"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

Roberta's version is stellar!

  10:18am Mr C:

First Take album by Roberta Flack, her first, is a subtle masterpiece. Killing frogs and all..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

Kenny Dorham on trumpet here. (He was also playing on the Herb Geller track that opened this set.) The tenor sax player on this Max cut is credited as "Theodore 'Sonny' Rollins."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

So glad you're here, βrian!
  10:26am Listener Gregory:

IMHO, Max Roach's post-bebop music never got the attention and credit it deserved.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Never enough attention, ever, for Max Roach, Listener Gregory. (No surprise coming from me, I bet.)
  10:48am Mr C:

The other side of Marvin L single is boss as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

From Numero Group"

Although Two Plus Two was long suspected to be a Wilburt Jackson and Cyril Clarke duo, they form just half of the equation. Jackson began with Clyde Wilson as the Two Friends, which recorded on Harvey Fuqua's HPC label. When Fuqua joined brother-in-law Berry Gordy in 1963, he brought Jackson and Wilson with him to Motown. Clarke began singing with the Majestics but left the group before they signed to Motown in 1963 as the Monitors. He later joined Motown as a songwriter and teamed up with Jackson, composing the Monitors' "Number One In Your Heart" in 1965. The other half of Two Plus Two, Lawrence Matchett and Terry Davis, joined them on the 1966 single, and the quartet gigged sporadically. Recorded in New Haven at Larry and Danny Lick's Sound Inc., the lone 45 was issued on Velgo, but the quartet didn't last much longer. As Clarke said, "It wasn't going nowhere, and one day I said to myself, 'I can't be doing this shit, I got too many babies.'"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

Know anything about the Vont Claires, Mr C?
  10:50am Mr C:

That last sentence was how I felt on my first hiatus from FMU many years ago
  10:51am Mr C:

Vontastics yes, Vont Claires no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

If Mr C doesn't know 'em, they don't exist!
  10:52am Listener Gregory:

The Mont Claires are a New Jersey group. The Vont Claires, I don't know.

Interesting the comments about the seriousness/religiocity! of Coltrane. Dare I say that humour is a rare commodity in some jazz. Is it allowed?

  12:09pm willcrete:

Thanks for broadcasting this multi-part program. Looking forward to the next session. I am going to be reflecting more on Amiri Baraka's comment towards the end that in Miles' Kind of Blue Band, that the balance was obtained with "Cannonball as the formalist of the blues and Coltrane as the expressionist beyond form." I've actually long thought something closer to the converse (i.e Coltrane as formalist / Cannonball as expressionist). But... I am looking forward to revisiting the record and listening to it through Baraka's paradigm for a change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Artie Haywire:

Fantastic. Have heard this before, but it continues to deliver. Anything to put one in the mindset of thinking about Trane is just a joy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Doug Schulkind:

If you want this set to end, you're gonna have to say "Uncle."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm David D:

Will there be an Uncle Michael, though?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Doug Schulkind:

There is not substitute for the real Uncle Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm David D:

There could be songs of praise...
  1:22pm Alex in Illinois:

How about Uncle Bud by Boozoo Chavis?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Doug Schulkind:

It's in the basement, Alex.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 1:30pm βrian:

Physical correction? Does that involve a mohel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Tell me about it, Kenzo.

Hipaa laws don't permit me to divulge more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Webhamster Henry:

  1:38pm johnk77:

Avatar 1:39pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The drama in this Kenny Rankin song...I have to work it into a collage soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Doug Schulkind:

I remember hearing Larry King plotz about (and play) that song on his radio show. Which was a great radio show. (His TV deal was so bloody awful.)
Avatar 2:05pm Brian in UK:

It is a bit like cranking up an old car. Turn the handle, it fires up then all cylinders kick in and away you go. What's not to like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Doug Schulkind:

You can kick my tires, Brian in UK. It's okay. I LIKE it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm KevinfromBayRidge:

A successful deavatarvascularization.
Avatar 2:40pm hyde:

i'm in under the wire. at least i can listen to 20 minutes of this marathon.
  2:40pm Dean:

Avatarectomy sounds worse than what it would actually mean if it were an actual word.
Avatar 2:40pm Brian in UK:

Shocking admission but the last time I had a general when I woke up the first thing I did was look at the form of the nurses. Then went back to sleep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Doug Schulkind:

You can run, but you can't, Hyde.
Avatar 2:42pm Brian in UK:

On that note time to go. Wonderful as ever, Doug. Hope your Dad recovers soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Doug Schulkind:

Thank you, Brian. He has made significant progress in just a few days. Not sure he will ever be able to get back to where he was two weeks ago. But he is one sturdy fellow. Would never bet against him.
Avatar 2:47pm coelacanth∅:

-you mean, your gorgeous beloved just tracked in with a perfect 10-minute sandwich?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Doug Schulkind:

EXACTLY, coelacanth∅.
Avatar 2:49pm ndbob:

Hey UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm David D:

Are you referring to the tram by any chance?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm David D:

Does anyone say streetcar anymore for that matter? I always wonder what to call our omnipresent light rail here in English, usually tram works.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Doug Schulkind:

In Germany, they construct fake bus stations outside nursing homes. The old folks wander out and wait at the busses that never come. Eventually, the staff comes out and gently retrieves them. Very humane.
Avatar 2:54pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm David D:

Doug, I never heard of that. But it is a big enough country...
Avatar 2:55pm βrian:

But every now and again the bus does come. That's just how it goes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Doug Schulkind:

In Dusseldorf, I believe. Part of an experiment in dementia care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm David D:

Okay, I found the story:

Very interesting, I wonder if they do do that around here somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Doug Schulkind:

I heard a story about in on THE RADIO.
Avatar 2:59pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm David D:

Well I suppose the streetcar depot is up ahead. Thanks for the double show, Doug! And best wishes to your father...
Avatar 2:59pm βrian:

I can just imagine it: "Well, if you have to go, fine. There's the radio right there. It will take you where you need to go."
(Crisis averted.)
  2:59pm uncle michael:
