@Joe That's one of the instances I'm referring to. He was called Bill Wyman. Figures!

@Joe and Vincent: for what it's worth, Leonard Bernstein said it was the as good as any song written by Schubert.

It's been so hot on the isthmus that I think I could even put up with some Seals & Crofts — as long as it's served with a nice lemonade.

Hey Joe.
John talking the parents' part on She's Leaving Home is spot on.
Avatar 10:17am
Itzall Ablurr:

Assuming everyone breathing has already obtained/listened online to the "new" 50th ann. version of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hurts Cloob Band, my 2¢ is that listening to "She's Leaving Home" AT volume is a very moving experience, in a good way. The orchestration (George Martin) is breathtakingly beautiful. Also, Ringo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
Guido from Cologne:

my own falsetto is pretty good, though not so durable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
Brian in UK:

John & Paul always complimented each others vocals who ever wrote the song.

John Stewarts' brother Michael formed We Five.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am
Brian in UK:

Recently heard Otis' version of "Water' on the Fame Studios comp. Brilliant.
Avatar 10:20am

"Fun is the one thing money can't buy" seems like a rather trite aphorism, and likely untrue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am

Falsetto sounds like an ice cream.

@Brian: I like falsetto mixed in with my gelato.

The PBS doc on Sgt Pepper the last couple of weeks is terrific.

Also have to recommend the Magical Mystery Tour in Liverpool. It's a lot better than dodging Bentleys in a business area and only a train ride away
Avatar 10:28am
Vincent Nifigance:

The Beatles Museaum itself is pretty disappointing. I went in 1992 then again in January this year, and it hasn't changed other than the additional building/shop with the shortlived 4D film, now gone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am

Greetings, you dirty hippies.

I dunno. "Fun is the one thing money can't buy"? I think that's something else.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am

Ranking all the songs of a band, or episodes of a TV show, or entries in a franchise -- one of the most basic kinds of clickbait EVER. I refuse to click on the Beatles article! (I always fall for the TV episode rankings articles though.) Let's have a ranking of all the NJ Turnpike rest stops in Entertainment Weekly!!!

The old-time connotation of "long-hair music" has always been fascinating to me-- it's pretty much completely disappeared by now.
Avatar 10:40am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

I've gradually come to see that a lot of the canonical "hippie" music of the 60s was just opportunistic young men trying to get girls ('cos that was what was the fashionable sound of the day). At least The Guise were honest about it!

Do it in the name of love. Stop in the name of love. I'm confused. Embarrassed to say but it's just my pride (in the name of love).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am
The Oscar:

@Wood-elf What's really weird, if I'm reading the song right, is that they're actually singing about using CLASSICAL music to get the girl. Before hippies, "longhair" was a stereotype for classical music aficionados. I have no idea how that started, or why it disappeared.

Cactus Blossoms on Surface Noise on a Monday morning. No matter what transpires this week, it has a spectacular start at least :-)
Avatar 10:54am

Love this Cactus Blossoms single!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am

Who saw the Cactus Blossoms in the Twin Peaks episode a few weeks back? Genius!

The Beatles song rating list is excellent. Well written and super snarky. I like how the worst is a slap in face right from start. You can either go wah I'm not going to read this or ooh, this is going to be interesting.
Avatar 10:54am

hi all, i heard Joe's descrip of Single File at 9.30am, and thought of Taylor Mac's 24 Decade of music show, which he performed as a 24hr(!) show in bklyn. he'll do it again, but in 6hr(?) chunks. if i recall, ping pong balls were used in "born to run", which was used as a Stonewall song.
